Should the Wings go after this kid. With Lids due to retire within the next 2yrs who else

could take over the mantle? Maybe the chance to get someone of Jays ability won't be there

when we need to replace Nic, so should the Wings act now. Could we afford to give up what

the Panthers will want for him and then chance getting him to re-sign with us. Is this the time

to offer up Nik jnr in a deal. Florida will want more than that thou, another roster player prospect and a draft maybe. We have no chance of getting Hedman in the draft, Jay is ready

made and could anchor the D for the next 10 yrs at least. I say we should take a real good look at what we could do here, to make it possable we would have to get a big chunk off the

wage bill.

Kronwall $3.0m 3yrs left on contract

Cleary $2.8m 4yrs left on contract

+prospect + 2nd round pick.

Looks a heavy exchange but I feel would be worth it down the line.

You offer Bouwmeester the combined $5.8m on a 3yr deal. Then Kenny can

re-up the deal after that time.

You get him to take that deal, and you are better than Holland.

PS- Leave the crack alone.

PSS- But if Bou is dumb enough to do that, sign him.

I'm not sure the kid is worth the contract offers he's going to get. Sure, he's got a big body, and he's one of the fastest skaters in the league. He's also capable of putting up 40+ points, and on a terrible Panthers team at that. Oh, and he's 25 years old. This all sounds good, right? Yeah, every other team in the league thinks so too. Brian Campbell, the older, slower, smaller offensive defenseman (who doesn't play all that much defense) had some GM throw 8M a year at him.

I'll gladly eat crow, but no way in the world the 'Wings can afford this guy (trade-wise or cap-wise).

IF the wings were going to go after him, they would've done it a few years ago before he was an all-star, when he was just a talented d-man playing on a regular basement dwelling team that noone cared about. You know, back when he could've been gotten.

I realize that we couldn't get him for that money, but when Nics gone Kenny could use part of his cap hit to up Bouwmeester's deal after 2 yrs. The $5.8m was just the cap gained by releasing Kronna and Cleary. you could up it to $8m and have $5+m left from Lids cap hit. So it is sort of a back end loaded deal.

My whole point in this, is that we haven't got anyone ready to try and replace Nic. Jay is as close as we could get and he could be on the mkt soon. Because we are sure going to have a big void when Lids does hang em up.

I'd love to have this kid on the Wings. I just love the way he plays.

Saying that, Holland will never trade anyone that he was able to secure with a home-town discount. And Cleary took one. The minute Holland takes advantage of that by dealing away one of these players, the whole sytsem could crumble. Fewer and fewer players would be willing to take a discount to stay a Wing.

But a guy like Filppula could be dealt. I think he got a lot more than he deserved.

But if we get JayBo, Holland will want to lock him up, and that means we could say goodbye to Hossa. But as much as I like Hossa, I'd take that tradeoff.

EDIT: I should have added that if the Wings were in the hunt to get JayBo, chances are they'd have to deal the Panthers Filppula and a guy like Ericsson or Kindl. Not sure if the Wings would do that.

I posted elsewhere that the Wings being able to sign Bouwmeester to a 6.5M per year contract would require them to trade Stuart, Filppula, and Kronwall, let Hossa and Sammy go, and possibly Franzen as well, unless he took 3.5M or less.

To summarize, the Wings won't blow up the roster to such an extent, and Bouwmeester signing for 6.5M is a discount as is.

3 top roster players for a rental? I seriously doubt it. I'd say a roster player, a top prospect and a 1 or 2 pick, depending on whether he re-signs or not.
