More Mystifying Officiating

Fraser blows one, this time.

Basically, there's some intense play going on. Jason Smith has Kaleta lined up in front of the benches, and when he sees Kaleta's numbers, he holds off on the hit, basically holding Kaleta up so Kaleta's head doesn't get pounded into the boards or tossed into the bench dangerously. He then helps Kaleta get steady and helps him up, Kaleta drops the gloves, and Smith goes with him and they get in a couple punches before getting broken up.

Smith is assessed with a triple minor (all roughing). Additionally, he's given a 10 minute game misconduct.

What the hell was Fraser thinking here? Even Buffalo fans seem to be pretty puzzled by this one.

Yeah, that's either a blown call or the ref's way of letting Buffalo try to get back into the game. I just think it's funny that they couldn't score on a 6 minute power play (well, it would have been 6 if they hadn't taken a dumb penalty in the middle of it).

Also, right before the end of the 2nd Koletta throws his arm up and Ottawa takes another penalty. Is Koletta untouchable or is he sucking the ref's chorizo or what?

I remember reading on hfboards that at the end, Buffalo had more powerplays in that game since any game since one in the early 90s. And that they were epicly failing on capitalizing on any of them. Even some of the Buff fans seemed to think that the refs were trying to give the Slugs a shot at that game.

I don't get how both Smith got 6 minutes, rather than, say, 2 minutes, and mystifying me a bit more, Kaleta got no penalty for dropping them? Totally retarded call by the refs.

I listened to part of this game on the radio; they said Buffalo went 1-for-12 on the powerplay in the game.

Years ago, Fraser was doing a DRW game at home. He calls two penalty shots against them. Wayne Maxner was the coach at the time. His quote about Fraser went along the lines of: "I can understand if he calls one, but there is no way he can call two; he's not tall enough to see over top of the net".

Yeah, the real crime here is Buffalo's complete waste of a rare 6-minute PP.

Not to say that the call wasn't absolutely brutal, it was. Smith ought to get a freaking commendation from the league or something, given the recent history we've had with questionable hits. Class move by a solid player and guy.

It's not THAT bad of a call. It's at least 2 for the hit from behind and another 2 for roughing. That last pair of minutes is a little puzzling though.

Oh yea, I definitely agree with the 2 from behind.

But the 2 for roughing? Kaleta was the one that dropped the gloves first and didn't get a roughing minor (or anything, for that matter)

And the 3rd minor is completely ????

I've pretty much just accepted that officiating is going to be inconsistent all across the league and don't really try to get too worked up about it because it isn't changing anytime soon. Inconsistent doesn't always necessarily mean bad, just means it is inconsistent. Only rule to the exception is O'Hallaran phantom interference calls. :P

I still always get a kick though hearing Redmond on Wings broadcasts be in disbelief about them almost every single penalty call. :D

s***ty call!!

If it was O'halleran in a Wings game and Ozzie tripped someone he might have gotten a 5 minute major and game misconduct.

OH!! They couldn't replace the goalie until the penalty was up.

This is how players get injured, how could there NOT be a charge on the hit on Lebda? Mickey was like he raced in from 100 feet away.

I am puzzled. I would love to know what his rationale was for the penalty minutes assessed. Was he even paying attention? Trying to make the game more interesting? I don't know. Wow.

Glad to see the NHL has some world-class refs. <_<
