shoe 165 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Maybe this would be a better after the trade deadlin thread but Im bored so... I was looking at the standings today and its likely that Detroit would finish 1 or 2 and in 7 / 8 it could be wide open. There are 5 points separating last from 8th. If I had to pick one team to face san joseinstead of us in the 1st round Id hope we could avoid playing Columbus in the 1st round hot rookie playoff goalies scare me especially with Detroits past. Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 The thing is though, Columbus is the only team in the NHL to have NEVER made the playoffs. I would love to face a team with zero playoff experience in the first round. Or I also wouldn't mind playing Nashville again if they find a way to make it. Wingsin09 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 I have would have to say Dallas. Although that's the only chance i get to see my beloved Wings, the Stars handled them pretty convincingly. Of course the Wings are playing much better now, but Dallas always gets up to play Detroit
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Even though Columbus doesn't have any playoff experience, I still don't want to meet them in the 1st round. Playing 4-7 games against that freak Mason would be scary. I'd also want to avoid Minnesota, both because we often have tough games against them and because they're not a very fun team to watch. With the way Dallas have started to play, they could be a tough team in the playoffs too.. but I also think another series against them would be fun, and we seem to have their number. The crazy thing is that even Phoenix at 15th have a realistic shot at getting in to the playoffs. Personally I'm hoping Colorado, LA or Nashville have a strong finish and we get to face one of them. Very true. Although Columbus still has the reputation of being a bit of a pushover, a hot young goalie is NOT what we want to face. The Wings have a history of turning these kind of kids into playoff superstars.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Chicago... But they are pretty much my second team, so if I could actually STAND any team beating us... It's them.
Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Hmm... let's see.. Anaheim: Loaded with cheapshotters Calgary: Loaded with big hitters Nashville: Tootoo Dallas: Underrated team because of their slow start; Ott Colorado: Giving us a hard time this year.. would rather face them in the 2nd round when we're warmed up Teams I would really like to face: Columbus: No playoff experience; division rival Chicago: Beating Quenneville = Stanley Cup; rival; O6 matchup. Though that might have to wait til the 2nd or 3rd round.
SDavis35 140 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Seeing as Chicago has a strong lead over the rest of the pack, we won't be seeing them until Round 2. If I had to choose right now, I think I'd like the oilers. Rolly hasn't been as hot as he was back in 06, and their defence hasn't looked so hot several times this year. An inconsistent team like that would be nice. Kings would be a decent opponent too, but with Quick in net and young, he's got a good chance of catching HGS (hot goalie syndrome) Since we'll more likely finish 2nd, I pick Vancouver, they just don't scare me, even with Luongo. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 You do realize that we are 0-3 against Colorado this year? Yeah, but 2 of those games were decided with a shoot-out, and in the 3rd the GWG was a penalty shot.. Mainly I think going up against Raycroft in the 1st round would be perfect, given how our goalie situation will most likely be.
Chunkylover 26 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Although a San Jose/Detroit WCF would be epic, I'd like to see Nashville get in to eighth spot and beat the Sharks in the first round. Nashville has four straight first round exits: two against us and two against the Sharks. They're one of my favorite teams beside the Wings and it would be good for their franchise to have some playoff success. It would be nice to avoid any West Coast teams but it would be nicer to avenge our '07 loss to the Ducks. Just for symmetry's sake; not sure how much it would mean to beat a team that's a shadow of their former selves. Plus they'd probably goon it up.

edicius 3,269 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Columbus honestly scares me with Mason between the pipes. Not saying they're going to win the Cup or something like that, but they could easily pull off a first round upset.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Any team on the West coast with a hot goalie and players that nobody has heard of. At this point, that team could be anybody. It's been a while since the Wings coasted out of the 1st round without difficulty, thus it's the round I'm always the most nervous about. I guess it brings back too many bad memories. Dano33 41 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) Just to put it out there, goalies don't have to be young to get on a hot streak in the playoffs. For someone to say they would be worried against LA because their goalie is young is pretty dumb if you ask me. Remember Roloson, mid thirties, can't get a puck past him, leads his team to the SCF. Any goalie can do this. Anyway, i don't care who we play in the playoffs, but i can't wait to see, i love playoff hockey more than almost anything. stactum 4 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 The team I wouldn't want to face is Dallas. It wouldn't be an easy series for Detroit. Actually the way I see it, once Detroit is past first round they will play much better since they are accustom to playoff gameplay which makes it easier and all old habits such as "killer instinct", "60 minutes of play" etc. are back. Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Edmonton. A s***ty, lousy team that always overachieves in the playoffs after embarrassing themselves in the reg. season. They don't deserve to be in the playoffs and if they make it - they will ruin a nice run by a team like the Wings or San Jose.
NomadFromKazoo 42 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 I want to avoid playing. 1- Anaheim 2- Calgary 3- Vancouver I'm totally with you on this. I'd love to play Columbus in the first round and Chicago in the second and we don't travel until the Conference Finals and hopefully the Sharks pull a Sharks and don't make it that far either. I acknowledge everyone's points on the risks of playing various teams, I just think other the the Sharks we just need our B+ game to beat any of them and we're not losing unless we don't play well. And with Calgary and Anaheim there's the additional factor they're thugs.
softshoes 83 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 Unless they move Pronger at the deadline I'd just as soon not play the Ducks. I hate Pronger. I hate his ass face and I'm going to go and bite my pillow now.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 The playoffs are a completely different game than regular season hockey, they just happen to be governed by the same rules. We've learned that the season doesn't mean a whole helluva lot, and that any of these teams could be dangerous, or any one of them could choke and fold. TheCaptain19 49 Report post Posted February 21, 2009 everyone talking about mason being scary needs to think about legace's experience in the playoffs. the playoffs are a lot different than the regular season, and players don't always get that right away.
