I Red Wings I 40 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) The Montreal Canadiens have fired head coach Guy Carbonneau and general manager Bob Gainey will take over behind the bench. Although they got off to a very strong start, the Canadiens have had their struggles this season. They currently sit in fifth in the Eastern Conference standings with 77 points. Associate coach Doug Jarvis, assistant coaches Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson will all be staying with the club. TSN Edited March 9, 2009 by Heaton

Ray1905 18 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Sad news for Carbo, another coach fired by the Habs, the list is getting longer and longer. It's never the players fault with the Habs, I hope they don't make the playoffs, the only reason I didn't hate the Habs was Carbo and now he's gone.
daniel1 32 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 This reminds me of when Jersey did it a few games before the end of the season in 2000. I'm sure Montreal is hoping for a similar result. In 2000, Lamoriello fired coach Robbie Ftorek with just nine games left in the season. Assistant coach Larry Robinson took over, and the Devils defeated Dallas to win the Stanley Cup. In other Montreal news, Carboneau was interviewed about his plans after coaching and replied, "Well, the Kostitsyn boys say they know some good fellas who might be interested in hiring casual helpers for a little under the table money to tide me over till Quenville or Granato are fired again". akustyk 84 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 This reminds me of when Jersey did it a few games before the end of the season in 2000. I'm sure Montreal is hoping for a similar result. In 2000, Lamoriello fired coach Robbie Ftorek with just nine games left in the season. Assistant coach Larry Robinson took over, and the Devils defeated Dallas to win the Stanley Cup. except, 2000 Devils had all essential tools to win the cup. including a goalie who, even if overrated, is a playoff monster capable of winning games basicaly singlehandedly. in front of this very Marty they had Scotty "All Star" Niedermayer, Scott Stevens and a number of other premium defensemen. Habs... they have Price who is all but solid. and the rest of the team is pretty average. though, that's not the biggest problem. this team, for a number of season already, sucks badly on chemistry and work ethics. whatever is the reason they simply won't get it done. Carbo was not the problem there.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 How do we explain this? The Habs didn't open the season in Europe did they? Seriously though, I'm not surprised. I don't think it's a good move, but ít's not very surprising.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Montreal's been putting together quite a Centennial year highlight (?) video. You couldn't have written a script as bizarre as this season, thus far.
miller76 463 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 I am actually a little surprised this didn't happen earlier. They have been on this downward spiral for some months now. Gainey is the one who should have been relieved of his duties though! This team who very much needed to make a trade at the deadline, decided to stand pat. Acting like everything is a-okay! Just another example of mismanagement above the coaching position, and the coach being the fall guy. This off season is going to totally look like an auction. More coaches will probably be relieved and replaced with good ones like Renney, Carboneau, and Savard. I would be surprised if Granato, Mactavish, Carlisle, and Lemaire have their jobs at seasons end. Should be interesting.

With all that has happened for them this season, it's amazing that the low-point is still the game they played in those horrible classic jerseys. I wonder if that game wasn't when their unfortunate series of events started.

Glubki 17 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 I was more surprised at how well they played at the start of the season after losing Streit and Ryder to free agency than by this announcement. With the way they have been playing there was/is a good chance that Carolina or Buffalo would have knocked them out of the playoffs. The injuries didn't help but Carbs did seem to lose control of the team and than the off-ice issues just put the final nail in his coffin. I wouldn't be surprised to see him behind the bench somewhere at the start of next season. Firing Gainey at this point wasn't going to help the team but I would bet his job is in jeopardy if they fail make the playoffs or advance past the first round. Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 (edited) The way NHL clubs hire and fire coaches still amazes me. Being one of the better coaches in the league makes no difference when GM's are forced to prematurely abandon long-term goals because of misdirected pressure from fans or owners who don't know better. Coolio Mendez 7 Report post Posted March 9, 2009 Rumours abound that in the last few days that Gainey has talked to Tom Renney, Peter Laviolette and Denis Savard about the job. I find it hard to believe that Therrien would be considered as the Montreal franchise has always had a stance against re-hiring people they've fired. One of the reasons behind Therrien's firing in the first place was that he and Gainey (who became GM while Therrien was coach) did not have the same same philosophy.....and it was that exact same philosphy that got Therrien fired in Pittsburgh
