Opie 308 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 As much as it helps the Wings to have Wish out of the line up, I would like to beat the Ducks full staff! The only positive in this is that the Ducks D will be exhausted now, Carlyle will only have 4 D he trusts, Pronger and Neidermeyer will log a lot of minutes! I have been reading lung contusion on the TSN web site. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=277697 Hope he is alright, I don't wish an injury on anyone even if they did win the game last night. shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I think it's like a deep bruise??.... Saw this happen in a lacrosse game once when a D man took a shot to the chest. It caused him to cough up a lot of blood. The EMTs said it was nothing to worry about. Never did see the kid after that. Last time i checked, coughing up blood was a pretty bad sign. Who will replace him? that article is crap - Homer did NOT Skate by him and elbow him in the head. It was acidental as Homer was try to move away from him with another defender on the other side of him. I hope Wiz is ok and has a full recovery... ...but not till after the series. Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I just saw on EPSN's website that it was a lung contusion. Don't know what that is but I know I don't ever want it. Lung contusion is where the lung is physically traumatized in some way (in this case a direct hit by a puck, and NOT an elbow to the head). In any event, the pulmonary capillaries, and to a lesser extent arterioles and venules, break and blood is free to flow into the lungs. As you can imagine this affects breathing, and would explain why he was also coughing up blood. Unless there are complications, the recovery as far as I know should be similar to a normal bruise. kidish 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 Last time i checked, coughing up blood was a pretty bad sign. Wisniewski was bloodied by Holmstrom's elbow, not the lung contusion. Nonetheless, Wisniewski was kept overnight at the hospital. Supposedly, it was just precautionary, as he was otherwise fine.

Lung contusion, difficulty breathing=caused by puck. Coughing up blood=elbow to face/nose. (There was no blood prior to him receiving an elbow.) I know Homer's a well liked guy and all, but he still elbowed an injured player in the face.
wingfan13 44 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I thought the trainer said he was coughing up blood ? If so, that didnt happen from the elbow. Also, the elbow was 100% accidental.

I know Homer's a well liked guy and all, but he still elbowed an injured player in the face. An actual lung contusion includes broken blood vessels in the lungs and subsequent bleeding. Its very common to observe coughing up blood when people have this. I don't think anyone can say that there was no blood prior to him receiving an elbow. He was hit with the puck just seconds before, and its going to take a moment for the blood to pool up in the lungs enough to become noticeable. I'm not disputing that Homer elbowed the guy in the face, but I'm almost certain that isn't was caused the blood.
kidish 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 You folks are probably right, I'm definitely no doctor...and am a Leafs fan to boot. Makes me far less qualified. I don't have an opinion on the intent of the elbow, but it was harsh watching the replay of this clearly injured player (refs not stopping that play) getting nailed by Holmstrom. From watching my riddled team play, I can tell you, accidental or not, we'd have been whistled on that one. Instead, Detroit got a PP and scored. It was a weird game like that. RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 Lung contusion, difficulty breathing=caused by puck. Coughing up blood=elbow to face/nose. (There was no blood prior to him receiving an elbow.) I know Homer's a well liked guy and all, but he still elbowed an injured player in the face. He elbowed him but it was accidental - Homer was jammed in between 2 Ducks. Actually when I look at the replay Homer avoided hitting the guy with his stick but in the process elbowed him - accidentally. Can't tell if the puck hit him too. Don't want to see anyone injured but it would be some nice karma to have one of their D out for a game since we've had to live with that too...
StormJH1 231 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 This is absurd to me for two reasons: (1) Anybody watching that video can clearly see that Wisneiwski was messed up by the initial shot to the ribs. He fell to one knee and essentially stopped playing even though the puck was cycling in his zone at a critical time. (2) It's not like there isn't video of this...we have video from multiple replays, and nobody can even agree on what happened or how Holmstrom might have contributed to it. I struggle with the argument that this was a clearly malicious (and some are arguing suspendable offense) when we're looking right at it on tape and you can see he had the prior injury. Maybe if he had a concussion and Holmstrom elbowed him in the face, that would make sense. But the supposed eggregious act doesn't even match the symptoms here. A puck strike to the chest DOES. StormJH1 231 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) Shut the f*** up. Seriously. Brad Stuart got called for a legal hit, and then we got a goal taken away from us. Just shut the f*** up about the league giving the Wings any benefit of the doubt. Are there seriously people out there who think the NHL bends the rules for the Red Wings to win? Seriously? Have you looked at our roster? We have like 9 Swedish players. Our best player is a quiet Russian dude who says things like "dangle dangle". This is the best franchise of the past 20 years in the NHL, and we even have problems marketing it within our own city! Why would the league give us a handout? Just because the refereeing is atrocious doesn't mean it's necessarily biased one way or the other. Reffing a Ducks game is like trying to judge fouls on Shaquille O'Neal, they play so much differently than everyone else that nobody knows how to address it. If you called a Ducks game, any Ducks game 100% by the book, they could never win. Seriously, with all of the cheap shots during play and after the whistle, they'd have a perpetual man in the box. But when you get in these playoff series, refs don't want to decide games with calls, so they ignore blatant things the aggressive team (Ducks) does, while balancing things with makeup calls for marginal infractions on the more passive team (Wings).
