Music at the Joe

Man I am so glad someone finally said this. I have felt this way for more than a decade. They do play some cool things that cleverly describe the action. But every other song is some super weak random 80's new wave or disco that makes you stop and ask, "Why the hell are they playing this?" I felt that way when I lived in Detroit all through the 90's and used my parents season tickets to go to games. When I moved out west I got the center ice package to keep up with the Wings. But the more I watched other teams broadcasts and heard the music in more buildings...the worse the music at the Joe sounded in comparison. Don't get me wrong I LOVE the JOE. I try to hit a game every time I am in town to visit family. Almost every other arena plays better music than the Joe. They need more Van Halen. In Philly everytime they score they throw down the end of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" and the whole crowd cheers "Hey Hey Hey!" If they're are gonna play stuff from the 80's hows about old Metallica. I swear during national broadcasts it's embarrassing. There have been times in the middle of boring games in the middle of the season when I'll notice a song come on and they will end to repair the ice or something and the song will stay on a little longer then usual and it will be some out there wimpy cheesy song (it's late I wish I could think of an example) that will make me go "This person has to be slipping that song in to mess with people. There is no way ANYONE is enjoying that song." I know taste is relative. If it was up to me they would be playing nothing but real Detroit music like The Stooges and MC5. But at least for Pete sake knock of the Wang Chung and Kool & The Gang and play some more Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Stones. I know a lot of people don't even notice music and of all things to complain about.... But it has bugged the HELL outta me for years and I am just glad to hear someone else say it. They got a new guy to announce the goals (regulating Budd Lynch to more low-key annoucements) I say it is time to modernize the music at the Joe. Beacuse the guy the have had for the last 2 decades is cheesy and weak. And that's all I have to say about that. GO WINGS! :skull: :rockstar: :skull: :punk: :skull:

Listen to the lyrics, most songs have something to do with what's going on during the game. The DJ at The Joe is a thinker, and doesn't just play what's currently at the top of the charts.

To each their own, but personally I like his choices.

+1

Absolutely! Many times it is hilarious. I suppose it takes a little thought to figure it out.

I totaly agree!.. Who ever is in charge of the media during the game should be fired. The music is Quiet for one, and the song choices are very lame and do not pump up the crowd. I was at the game last night the crowd was very lame.

I have been to games in Philly and when they start pumping Metallica over the speakers The place goes crazy.

It cracks me up whenever he plays Living on a Prayer (Oh, we're halfway there...) - he did it after we won game 1 and 2 against Pittsburgh, and did it when we knocked out Anaheim.

I like heavier stuff, but I'm glad he sticks with the 80s feel. I'd rather listen 80s hair metal and arena rock than some crap nu-metal. If you want to play some heavy pounding metal, at least take death metal or thrash or another respectable genre (in my opinion), but I'm not sure that's what you need at a hockey game.

I wouldn't mind Rossini (William Tell Overture) or Wagner's Walkürenritt, overplayed as they are. And some happy trance etc. would be acceptable. Then again, I don't actually go to the games, so it prob affects other people more. I just hear stuff through my computer speakers...

I love it! I even yell "born and raised in SOUTH DETROIT" while watching at home, and I was born and raised in Southern Ontario.

I was born in EAST DETROIT so i change the words a bit for me. Surprisingly enough...my gf is a small town girl. We joked that it should be our song because it fits us perfectly.

I'm not from Detroit, but I've read somewhere that it's fairly obvious that Journey aren't from there either, because the southern area of Detroit isn't referred to as 'South Detroit' but as 'Downriver'. I have no idea whether this is correct or not, could some Detroit denizen enlighten me?

I am an older classic rocker & don't really care for much of todays music.....however, last spring when they played "Hell Yeah" by Rev Theory it really pumped me up. I've never been to the Joe &am from Canada(actually Darren Helm's hometown)....but on tv when the Wings stepped onto the ice with the spotlights swirling &that song cranked it really set the tone (they were playing it last spring when Fleury did his famous face plant coming onto the ice.) I was wondering if they play it at all this year as I haven't heard it on tv.

Game 6, Mellon Arena, Dio - Holy Diver. Enough said.

"What?! Are you afraid to play a little Ronnie James Dio?!" <- for those of you that know and appreciate where that line came from.. lol

Hey, Hey Hockeytown

The Hockey Song (with Ken Kal)

Detroit Rock City

Let's Go Wings (though now he's been playing some of your stupid dance/trance/techno/whatever-the-********-wanna-call-it music before the opening draw)

and that's BEFORE the game starts.

When the Wings start sucking and we're in a rebuilding mode, I'll allow a change in music, but watching old playoff games and seeing the same Hockeytown logo and hearing the "Let's Go Wings! Let's Go Wings!" thud throughout the arena - just awesome. If you want your stupid techno, go cheer for another team. I'll take Motown and our 90s winning music.

It's tradition. It's winning. It's Detroit.

Technically there is no true pure South Detroit. Windsor, Canada is too the South of Detroit. There is however a Southwest Detroit.

I agree with most of the songs that they play, there is just a couple songs that need to go. Now don't quote me because I don't go to Wings game (live in Minnesota) and this could be stupid to say but is there any pump up songs? I know at some other rinks they play a song and the crowd goes crazy. Do we have any of those?

Wrong. They play the same goal song as Anaheim, which is fitting for a piece-of-s*** team devoted to goonery.

Please say it ain't so. Please tell me it's some California thing (because I just escaped years of it), a Bay Area California thing.

I've never been to Detroit (maybe next year I'll get up there for a game.) so I know little of the music at the Joe. But I can tell its changed over the years. In the late 90's the DJ seemed to have a sense of humor, now a days, I don't get it half the time.

Also, I miss the Imperial March that used to play at the beginning of the Power Play. But I understand why they quit that, seemed like, a few years ago, every arena was copying the Joe with that. Sucks. The William Tell Overature just doesn't do much for me, as its been used in just about every sporting venue ever.

I actually find the songs fitting for the game. If i don't get to hear Journey during a game, i am quite depressed. What's the Dillio by mest always makes me laugh.

I enjoy the music at the Joe, yeah they have been the same for quite some time now but the wings have been doing the same thing too, WINNING, I could care less what they play as long as the continue winning.

I sure hope not. Sandstorm is the only good hockey song that is techno.

'Like it or lump it', but techno has its roots in Detroit. House shouldn't be played as it is from Chicago. Country should not be played anywhere. If they wanted to play Swedish music to honour the Swedish Red Wings, they could choose from a nice selection of crappy Eurodance and melodic death metal.

My point it I guess that as long as the music makes the crowd happy, and ideally has some reference to the current situation (Sweet Caroline should we meet Carolina in the SCF, Living on a Prayer when we've won two games of a series etc.), what's wrong with it? I don't watch hockey or go to hockey games to listen to music. In Sweden there isn't much music and instead the fans have drums/banners/etc. and sing chants the entire game. That is quite nice - definitely better than cheerleaders.

They still play it at times.

My question is, who runs the music?

Google "Tunes by T".
