Should Maltby Have Had To Give Up #18

I truly cannot understand your mindset at all.

Players take pay cuts to play here. How much money he's getting paid doesn't mean much. And actually, I believe Lidstrom is the highest paid player on our roster. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I read somewhere that part of the team setup was to keep Lids the highest paid player.)

Lidstrom and Hossa are both being paid $7.45 million this season.

SEE!!! NOT FAIL. Succeed. The kid knows his salary chart. The Hoss should get the number he likes. End of Story. #18 = The Hoss. Maltby can be number 86, since he's about to be just that anyways.

Marian Hossa likes the number 18. I think Maltby should have given it up when The Hoss came on board. I think management should have stepped in if Maltby didn't willingly give it up like Fischer gave up #2 to Hatcher. What do you think?

I think NO! Maltby's been here since 1996 and won 4 Cups. Hossa's selfish if he wanted Maltby to give up his number.

This is like the ramblings of a 10 year old. A player's salary does not give him preferential treatment. It may on other teams but not on the Red Wings. Each new comment you post makes you look like an even bigger idiot.

At first, I could respect the fact that you think differently. But now, you're starting to act like a troll.

There is absolutely no reason that Matlby should've given his number up to Hossa. Hossa may have asked, but I'm sure he was even smart enough to figure out that when an organization veteran says no, you don't push it any further.

If you're trying to imply that Hossa deserves the same organization recognition as Lidstrom, I'm going to laugh my ass off. Hossa is nowhere near Lidstrom's level, no matter how much he's getting paid.. and Malts most certainly should not bow to down to whatever Hossa wants just because he's a potent goal-scorer.

Holy cow. Sometimes I wonder if people on this board actually HAVE a brain.

Hossa actually asked politely.

Oh, ok. In that case, you are absolutely right.

Wait. Hossa is on the phone with me right now. He says "I hate Jake Ryan, tell that kid I don't want him to cheer for me."

So there ya go.

Hossa actually asked politely.

Show me the article that quotes Hossa saying that and I want an article from a reputable source.

I like Ho$$a as much as the next guy, but as much as we ALL love him...let's try to keep one thing in mind...HOSSA IS A HIRED GUN...like a mercenary. I doubt he'll be back next year, because of the cap, but for now he's using us as much as we are using him...Maltby is a career Wing...

I found out we signed Hossa when I was in the NHL store in NYC and they had a #81 Hossa jersey on display...Marian's younger brother Marcel used to wear 81 for the NY Rangers, so I had honestly thought we signed him...and I asked the guy working there "Why is this guy a big deal? ...That's not Marian is it?"

I just wanted to talk about SOMETHING ELSE than how bad certain players are playing right now.

Instead of starting another ridiculous thread every time you're tired of the other discussions going on, try this:

1. Look at the top right of your screen.

2. Find the little red box with the X in it.

3. Move your mouse to position your arrow on the X.

4. Click it.

5. Problem solved.

I hope we remember this come 7/1 and don't act like a bunch of bitchy Pens fans about it. I have faith in you guys.

Maltby should have given Hossa his locker too. Here's an idea... when Hossa has more Stanley Cup rings than Maltby, Maltby should surrender his number. Till then, Hossa can shut the f*** up. How's that? :)

Well let's see... here are a few things to consider for each player at the time Hossa joined the Wings:

Criteria__________________________________Maltby______Hossa______Winner

Number of games played in the NHL--------------------942-------------701-----------Maltby

Number of games played in a Wings uniform----------778--------------0-------------Maltby

Number of NHL Seasons played--------------------------14---------------10------------Maltby

Number of Seasons as a Red Wings---------------------12---------------0-------------Maltby

Stanley Cups Won--------------------------------------------4----------------0------------Maltby

Stanley Cups Won with Red Wings-----------------------4----------------0-------------Maltby

NHL Career Goals Scored----------------------------------119-------------299-----------Hossa

NHL Career Points Total------------------------------------243-------------648-----------Hossa

So, Maltby wins every comparison that's seniority related and Hossa wins the two scoring categories. It's crystal clear who the team would stand behind in the unlikely event of a fight about who should keep the number 18.

Let's put it this way- if the Wings had a player who'd been a Wing for 12 years, always wearing the number 69, and a new dude joined the team who could score like crazy but had no seniority within the Wings organization and was a less established NHL player the 12 year Wing would keep his number.
