King Crane 289 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Although Helm breaks the record for the most playoff goal before a regular season goal, it's still really sad to see he isn't eligible for Rookie of the Year or even his name on Lord Stanley's Cup. Here's the article: Helm Wins Game, Breaks Record With Assist From GHL Darren Helm scored the overtime goal to advance the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup finals. Greatest Hockey Legends.com gets the assist. In a beautiful piece of intermission foreshadowing, CBC's Jeff Marek highlighted Greatest Hockey Legends.com for my piece comparing Darren Helm and Eddie Mazur. Each player had scored a record 4 career playoff goals before scoring a goal in the regular season. Moments later Helm scored to give the Wings a 2-1 win. Helm now holds the record alone as that was his 5th career Stanley Cup playoff goal . . . and counting. Helm will be looking to earn his second Stanley Cup championship ring and amazingly he is still eligible for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year next season. Helm's Red Wings will of course have to defend their title against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a rematch. Game one is Saturday night at 7:30 EST. I will have my finals predictions by Saturday morning. Stay tuned!
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 If the Wings win the Cup, as long as Helm plays one game the Finals, he'll get his name on the Cup. It's on there from last year too. A player has to play at least 41 games during the regular season -OR- one game in the Finals to be eligible to have his name on the Cup. So guys like Helm and McCarty got their name on the Cup from last year, though they didn't meet the 41 games in the regular season requirement. http://www.nhl.com/cup/fun_facts.html To have one's name engraved on the Stanley Cup certain requirements must be met. A player must have at least 41 games played with the club or one game played in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, in 1994 a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players' names put on the Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play

Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I have to say the script on the cup is quite amateur looking.
Casey 145 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I have to say the script on the cup is quite amateur looking. Exceptionally. I get the tradition of hammering each letter, but seriously... engraving looks so much better.
TheUkrainian 49 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I find it funny/ironic that the 3 guys in this years running for the Calder Trophy are all on the teams that we beat.... What's that Versteeg/Ryan/Mason? You won the Calder Trophy? Well I won This; lol
catbox_9 1 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Maybe this year he can get his first name on there, too.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) Although Helm breaks the record for the most playoff goal before a regular season goal, it's still really sad to see he isn't eligible for Rookie of the Year or even his name on Lord Stanley's Cup. Luckily for Helm he's eligible for both those things! Helm's going to play enough playoff games to win a ring if the Wings win the cup. The Calder is based on regular season play, and Helm did not play enough games this year to be eligible OR to prevent him from competing for it next season. norrisnick 1 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 Helm is ineligible for the Calder. It's 20something+ GP in one season or 6+ GP in any two prior seasons.
sdogg1m 3 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) As amazing as Darren Helm's playoff record is; its even better when you consider that he was a -7 in 16 regular season games. I wouldn't be shocked if he is back in Grand Rapids after winning his second cup. BTW, I counted the Illitch name eight times on that cup. I know Mike owns the team but man that seems to be a bit much. Edited May 28, 2009 by sdogg1m
selkie 10 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 CBC apparently quoted Jim Nill a while back saying that Helm wouldn't see the minors again. (I assume save for the odd injury rehab stint)

Article Uhhh? He played in only a handful of games during the regular season...why would he be up for the Calder? And why won't he gets his name on the cup if we win? As long as he steps on the ice during the finals and we win he'll get his name on the cup. Are you a Greenhorn to the NHL ZMAN? If so, Welcome to the most knowledgable fan base around! stillwater 186 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) The only way Darren Helm sees a minor league game again, will be as a spectator. Edited May 28, 2009 by stillwater
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 I don't see how in the heck Helm could be back in GR permanently next year. No way. The lettering on the cup is kinda crappy looking but that's about as good as you can do with die punches and a hammer. And really at that point what's it matter what it looks like your name is on there for the ages!
Stiffy 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) Holy s*** that is a lot of Ilitch's!! Yea, and Atanas contributed soooo much. Sorry, I saw him throwing a hissy fit in a store years ago and he was the quintessential spoiled rich brat. Just pathetic, rude and snotty. Nobody here on this forum on the worst day of their life could have been that much of an ass. He actually used the most pathetic rich boy line of all, "Do you know who I am?" If he has anything to do with the future, Dead Things will be back. Edited May 28, 2009 by Stiffy
