Stiffy 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Is tonight any indication that the refs are going to stay out of the way? Is interference now allowed? Hell, as long as they keep it consistent, I think I'll take it, but I have some doubts about how consistent they will be, especially if things get too good for thew Wings. The only consistency in NHL reffing is that Game 3 will be overwhelmingly called in favor of whatever team is down in the series. I was pleased with tonight though. Most of the calls were deserved, or at least debatable. That's refreshing after a few series of absolute made up calls.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 I kinda liked the officiating tonight. Sure, they missed a really obvious penalty on Cooke, but other than that I think they let most of the little things go and only called the obvious ones. This is the SCF and I want to see 5-on-5 hockey and have the players decide the games and not the refs. But as you say, consistency is the key.

Yeah, but how about giving us a stoppage in play on an OBVIOUS and BLATANT trip on Kronwall that leads to a 1-on-0 break? We were lucky that Ozzie stands on his head as a matter of course during the playoffs. I was also frankly shocked that Zata didn't get a tripping penalty when Crosby tripped over his stick behind the net.
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Minus the miss call on Malkin tripping Kronwall, I think the officials did a pretty sweet job tonight. 2 pps for the pens, 1 for the wings. I can deal with that.
Grim 5 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 the sad part is, the Pens really aren't a goon-em-up team. Perhaps special teams won't be so critical in this series??
Yak19 303 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Let'em go both ways... fine with me but the 2nd period was a joke, 5 on 5 we will own all series GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vladiator 116 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Not too bad. As agreed the tripping call and Crosby's crosscheck on Z should have been no brainers.
RoninJai 5 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) Not too bad. As agreed the tripping call and Crosby's crosscheck on Z should have been no brainers. It wasn't too bad, but then again we won. As for the Pens fans bitching about wanting a penalty shot for that Z/Ozzie thing...well, they'd have to be offsetting for the slash on Helm's breakaway then. As far as I'm concerned it was a wash. Next game though I expect to be entirely different, if the 'Stache is working the game. Edited May 31, 2009 by RoninJai
Winger19 4 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 I wasn't overly thrilled with the officiating tonight, they did miss a few interference calls, an obvious high stick on zetts and a blatant cross check by Crosby in the first. In the end it didn't matter the Wings got the win and that's what counts.
Wingsin09 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 The elbow to Homer in front of the net was brutal. Other than that, no major grievances.

RoninJai 5 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 U mean Helm's breakaway??? Dammit, yes. I originally thought it was Helm, but then something popped in my mind and said it was Lebda, and thats what I typed. I fixed it.
RoninJai 5 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 The funniest thing of the whole though HAD to be the NBC guy's increasing incredulity at the missed calls the Pens were getting away with. I don't think I've ever heard that.
Firehawk 305 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 I was really happy with the lack of calls in the game. The refs stayed out of it. For game 2 tonight, look for the refs to get more involved. I have that feeling. I mean, do we really expect the refs to put together 2 decently refereed games in a row? Come on. Although, I bet Mc Creary is refereeing tonight, so it should be fairly nicely refereed. I think both teams are primarily interested in playing skilled hockey. Of course, I thought that with Chicago, and after 2 games they started resorting to goon tactics. With the Pens, if they do resort to goonery, they'll probably get away with it. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 When human error gets involved, there's always going to be inconsistent officiating, no matter how good or bad they might be, no matter how tight they might call the game or if they let the guys play. Sans the Malkin trip on Kronwall, I honestly do not see how you can be pissy with the officiating. It was as even as you can get for both teams, and they let the guys play. Opie 308 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 The only call I had a problem with was Gonchar (or Orpik) hauling down Abdelkader with the open net in front of him in the second. But the hook call with Hossa on the boards that followed was a make up so I guess all was even. All in all I liked calls, all of them (except the hook I just mentioned) were calls, the non-calls I can live with. If you let it go both sides, I don't care. The calls that they do make are usually what bothers me. Although I am still waiting for the phantom Stuart/Kronwall interference hit. BTW- Malkin is lucky to be still playing, Kronner had the sights on him!
Stiffy 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Seems like interference, roughing and even tripping are allowed while holding and slashing will be called. I hate to be on the conspiracy theory thing here, but two nights on NBC prime time might be a factor in the refs getting the hell out of the way. There are all kinds of new people watching this and to see play stop with a replay of unintelligible penalties is not exciting stuff.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 BTW- Malkin is lucky to be still playing, Kronner had the sights on him! What I would have given to have seen Malkin get Kronwall'ed for real there.. I hope him or Stuart gets Crosby or Malkin in this series.
Christopher Tequila 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 I think most people here are not complaing too much about the calls because the Wings won. What if Malkin scores on his break away after taking down Kronwell with the trip? What if one of the only scoring chances for the Wings in the third is the Helm break away that was negated by the slash? They call a slash on the Wings when a Pen has his stick broken, but when the Pens player obviously hits Helm right on the hands there is no call. As someone mentioned already, I was surprised at how many times the announcers mentioned the non-calls against the Pens. I am glad that the WIngs can get the win in spite of the calls. But if they call it like this all series and they don't get a couple of bounces, like they did in game 1, than those missed calls are going to add up and hurt the WIngs.
