Zetts 236 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 The company line or excuse for Zetterberg having a 70 point season was that he is used as a "Shutdown center" but when he doesn't do this job, no one brings it up. He was good against Crosby but was terrible against Getzlaf. Datsyuk played the same role in the finals in 2008. Wonder why Malkin didn't "Show up"? Datsyuk was at him at every step, hitting him everytime he got the puck. And line mates do matter, Holmstrom is a fourth liner when not playing with Datsyuk. Hossa's production speaks for itself. Hossa on a line with Zetterberg was down right awful. Hossa on a line with Datsyuk was average. The question you need to ask yourself, why hasn't Zetterberg never not played with a guy named Datsyuk or Franzen? Zetterberg's 90 point season came while playing with Datsyuk and Holmstrom. Zetterberg's Conn Smythe came while playing with Datsyuk. Datsyuk's 97 points THIS season came from playing with a variety of Wingers, hardly ever playing with Z. Datsyuk continues to produce with anyone. Like I said, put Holmstrom-Zetterberg-Hossa on a line and see how well they do. Oh wait, we've seen it and it was terrible. Ok, this thread is just turning into an argument between the two of us, so this is my last post on the matter. People keep making arguments for Datsyuk on these forums because of regular season stats. Yah, they're great. Zetterberg's aren't too shabby either. Yah, they were weak this year, but guess when his stats were good? The same time as always, the playoffs. There is no way to say Datsyuk has been better in the playoffs. In fact, you really just keep TRYING to refute my arguments, while never actually coming up with anything valid that I saw for the playoffs. There's two ways to look at the playoffs, either points, or what we'll call "other". Points-wise, we all know who wins. Once again, Zetterberg's career p/g is 0.894 to Datsyuk's 0.643. And BOTH have had injuries. If you, as I'm sure you will, come up with some reason as to why Datsyuk's numbers there are lower that's "not fair to him" then kindly actually do the math and show me what they should be instead of making unsubstantiated comments. And please, TRY to see both sides this time. If you take out some of Datsyuk's time because he wasn't 100%, do the same for Zetterberg. Zetterberg scored more points against Columbus and WAY more against Anaheim. We'll leave out the next 2 rounds to be fair to Datsyuk. And then we come to the "other". Zetterberg drew the defensive assignments. That shows what Babcock is thinking. Whether he failed defensively or not against Anaheim is subjective, but I'm sorry, who did Datsyuk play against? And despite his defensive responsibilities Zetterberg had 10 points to Datsyuk's 3. And if we go back to the finals in '08 you say that Malkin was invisible because of Datsyuk? Yah, Datsyuk did a good job there, I'm not taking anything away from him. Zetterberg had Crosby too though, didn't he? Nice for you to leave that part out. My argument isn't that Datsyuk's not good, his accomplishments can't be denied. The point was that Zetterberg is better. The stats support it, and the roles that he's been given support it. Why would Datsyuk get the job of shutdown center? When has Holmstrom or Hossa ever been used in that role? Zetterberg plays with Franzen and Cleary, all three are good skaters and defensive minded. Datsyuk plays with Holmstrom and Hossa, Holmstrom is brutal in all three zones and Hossa back checks like a maniac but in his own zone he is average. Since the lockout, Playoff PPG: Z: 71 points, 1 PPG Datsyuk: 51 points, .84 PPG Since the lockout, Regular Season PPG: Z: 318 points, 1.1 PPG Datsyuk: 368 points, 1.12 PPG ------------------ Zetterberg is more frequently injured in the regular season, Datsyuk is more frequently injured in the playoffs. Zetterberg scores at a higher rate, in the playoffs, to the tune of one more point over four games. So again, you've shown me nothing that shows that Zetterberg is "better". Their offensive statistics are identical and Datsyuk has a larger trophy case. If Zetterberg produces next season, in the same fashion he did this season, their stats will mirror each other. Motown4013 350 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 Zetterberg is my favorate Wing...and he is STILL underrated. He is a playoff beast in both ends of the ice and even though he had a "disappointing" regular season ( compared to other years) I think he felt a lot of stress about signing in Detroit. The guy is amazing and we would have not got as far as we did in the playoff's, this year OR last! Z Rocks!!!!!!!

BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 HATE Zetterberg? You kidding?! The last I checked, he got almost as much love as Yzerman used to get. I was under the impression that he was everyone's favourite Red Wing.
BlakKy 58 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 (edited) Well is it not apparent that Z is being groomed for captaincy? I mean when Lids retires (may God have mercy on our souls) Zetterberg is the ideal next captain. Great presence with his team, a model player, communicates well (specifically in English as well as Swedish), and he has a nice big contract with the Wings. I'd say if any Zata haters exist they are gonna be sad for years to come when he is sporting the C all over the place. Edited June 23, 2009 by BlakKy
CMatt89 63 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 Zetterberg has a Conn Smythe, A gold medal, and a stanley cup ring. Dastyuk has 2 cup rings, and a few im the biggest ***** in the league awards. Im pretty sure they are equally as valuable to any team they ever play on. Two different styles, both a master of their craft. Neither is better nor worse. HudlerFanatic 4 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 I LOVE Z!!! He is one of my three players that I am debating on for a jersey if Huds happens to leave the Wings.......!!! (yes, Im keeping my Huds jersey, but I have to have a current player as well! Zetterberg kicks ass!!! I actually just gave him "assist props" in the thread about Hudler not being worth $3 mil.......!!!
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 Hate Z? <snort> You've obviously never asked the ladies around here. No one hates Z. We may have other guys who are our favourites, but I think each and every Wings fan here is happy as a hog in slop to have him on this team. Any one care to prove me wrong? eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 Yeah sure. Just because he does not take stupid penalties makes him a *****? Nice logic you moron. The Lady Byng honestly has nothing to do with penalties taken. Take a look at the voting and see where Jarome Iginla ranked. IIRC he was 12th in the voting. He's not 12th in his division in gentlemanly play.
egroen 384 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 The Lady Byng is one of the oldest and most well-respected trophy in the NHL. Anyone who turns their nose up at it is a blithering idiot. Go ahead and check out the past winners -- these are all guys who are game-changers and epitomize what it is to be a professional athlete. To win the Lady Byng as well as the Selke is nothing short of amazing .
NomadFromKazoo 42 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 through-out the last year I seen like 3-4 threads daily about datsyuk that he is the greatest etc. Meanwhile Zetterberg rarely get any mentions at all. Is it a russian vs swedish thing? Imo Zetterberg was the only player that showed up for detroit in the finals. But it seem he doesnt get any credit for it. You don't mention Franzen even ONCE in your post, why do you hate him?
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted June 23, 2009 I would like to stop seeing Z as a shutdown forward, let the Maddens of the world do that. (Which is why I think the Wings should sign another strong defensive forward). I would like to see Z get back to being a player the other team needs to keep off the score sheet. (Which is why I think the Wings should sign another strong defensive forward). I would like to see Z get back to being a player the other team needs to keep off the score sheet. Why? It's traits like that which makes players like Zetterberg and Datsyuk so valuable. Not only are they are threat to light the light every shift, but they also stop the other team's top players from finding the net. It's very rare that you find a gem like that in today's NHL, much less two on the same team.
