Heatley rejects trade to Oilers

Recommended Posts

Sources say Dany Heatley has been asked to waive his no-trade clause to go to Edmonton in exchange for Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and Ladislav Smid.

If Heatley agrees to waive, it would appear the Sens and Oilers will have a deal, pending the official trade call with NHL central registry, but that is generally a formality.

Heatley informed the Senators in early June that despite having five-years remaining on a six-year contract extension that he recently signed that he wished to be moved.

The veteran forward became unhappy with his role in Ottawa last season, especially after the Senators made a coaching change. Heatley discussed his concerns about what he felt was the limiting of his ice time, and his shift from the first power-play unit to the second unit with head coach Cory Clouston in the Senators end of season meetings.

The Senators have gone downhill since they appeared in the Stanley Cup Final in 2007.

In the 2007-08 season, the Senators had a hot-start, but then had a brutal second-half of the season and held on to seventh place in the Eastern Conference, only to get swept by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

This past season, the Senators never really got it going, and missed the playoffs.

Heatley notched 39 goals and 33 assists in 82 games last season. The 72 points were his lowest point totals in his four seasons with the Senators.

The 28 year-old, had back-to-back 50 goal seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

If true, that's a lot to give up for a team that didn't have a lot of depth to begin with.

Cogliano would hurt to lose, but that's the type of sacrifice you make to land a proven scorer like Heatley. Penner and Smid, on the other hand, are easily replaceable. If it happens, I see this as a good deal for both clubs.

Heatley-Horcoff-Hemsky

and then...

Kotalik (if they sign him)-Gagner-O'Sullivan

Moreau-Pisani-Nilsson

Reddox-Stortini-Jacques/Pouliot/MacIntyre/Eberle

That's a lot of eggs in that first line basket, especially in what is essentially a trapping division (Minny/Vancouver, Calgary when they get a lead).

Good deal for Edmonton. Getting rid of Penner is a great thing, Cogliano is a great young kid, but Heatleys scored 50 goals twice, you make that sacrifice.

Where in Calgary do you hail from? I'm going to England for the next six weeks but I'm gonna be in Mount Royal for the next year or so, most likely.

The North East. Hey Mount Royal eh, nice place! Might be going there next year, or possibly the year after. Not sure how much longer I'm staying in Cowtown haha.

Ah alright.

Yeah, it's kind of a swanky area. Our house is getting a bunch of lancscaping work done though, so it literally looks like we're in the middle of No Man's Land at the moment

Both teams win.

Oilers get that prolific scorer that they want/need.

Ottawa dumps Heatley whilst picking up some much needed help with Cog's and Penner, Throw in Smid and i think Ottawa got the upper hand on that deal.

I enjoy this trade for both teams.

Now, it gets interesting.

Dany Heatley did not waive his no-movement clause before midnight eastern to facilitate an agreed-upon trade between the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers that would have sent Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and Ladislav Smid to Ottawa.

For now, and quite possibly forever, the deal is dead.

It gets interesting because while Heatley could change his mind at some point, the Senators are now responsible for a $4 million signing bonus payment that is due to Heatley on July 1. That is expected to greatly change the dynamic of any trade talks involving Heatley.

In other words, the price just went up if the Sens hope to recoup the money in the form of unloading contracts they don't want. Cash cannot change hands in an NHL transaction and the CBA does not allow the transfer of cash payments already made.

Can't say I blame him really.
