BlakKy 58 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 Difference is Jordan Staal isn't good enough defensively to be used very much as a shutdown guy, and there are a ton of Centers that are better than him at both ends of the ice. I think the Pens have played him sporadically on the Wing but it hasn't worked out very well. He is an excellent shutdown guy. One of the best PKers in the league too. Guest mindfly Report post Posted July 2, 2009 We all have red wing glasses on, that's why it's called LetsGoWings.com and not LetsGoAvalanche... We like the wings yes, but those 5goalies are all better than osgood, No matter how you look at it, period.

marcaractac 3,963 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 (edited) I really think Cleary will make the team. He can play almost any role, and Yzerman has already said that there will be surprises on the roster and that he wants to build a team that can also be responsible defensively. Cleary fits the billing. He'll be a 4th liner, and possibly see some PP time to be an in front of the net presence. Babcock will probably have a lot of say in him making the team as well. GO CLEARY!!! I also would not be surprised to see Lucic make the team. He can bring things to the table that pretty well nobody else invited can, and would be a great fit on a 4th line. Personally I think a 4th line of Lucic-J.Staal-Cleary would be a great engery line with scoring touch as well. Edited July 2, 2009 by marcaractac
nosyt612 103 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 IT won't happen, but a fourth line of Lucic, J Staal and Cleary would be an excellent energy line.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted July 2, 2009 IMO, Getzlaf absolutely has to be in top-6 if not top-3.
Red Crazy 201 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 I would take Cleary, Doan, and Smyth any day of the week over Spezza. Those three play with heart and you need alot of it to win a cup or a medal.

But I gots to have a dude that will play with an illegal curve and then get caught and then break it and try to cleverly cover it up.
finalfilppula 2 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 Period ? No sir. agreed. i can understand all of those invites except for (sorta) fleury and mason. oswell definitely deserved a shot at it, and with stevie at the helm, i thought there might've been a chance. i'm only disappointed for him; i'd rather see him rest up and not put more mileage in the books. also, i don't know which country to root for... seeing pavel get a gold medal might be nice. then there's babs and cleary... or rafalski. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 At the very least, Mason was thoroughly outdueled by Ozzie this season. Fleury too. In the finals, Osgood outplayed Fleury considerably in pretty much every game and over the course of the series. The difference was that the Wings skaters didn't come through when they needed to and the Pens did.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 SOOOOOOO sick that Cleary is added to this.. If he makes it, huge joy... But major stretch... The invite is big enough though, good luck. With that said, I'll bold the ones who I think will make the team based on 12 forwards, 7 defense, and 3 goalies. This is who I think WILL make it, not who I would pick. Who I would pick personally would look a bit different... Goaltenders (5) Martin Brodeur (Montreal, Que./New Jersey, NHL) Marc-André Fleury (Sorel, Que./Pittsburgh, NHL) Roberto Luongo (Montreal, Que./Vancouver, NHL) Steve Mason (Oakville, Ont./Columbus, NHL) Cam Ward (Sherwood Park, Alta./Carolina, NHL) Defencemen (16) François Beauchemin (Sorel, Que./Anaheim, NHL) Jay Bouwmeester (Edmonton, Alta./Calgary, NHL) Dan Boyle (Ottawa, Ont./San Jose, NHL) Brent Burns (Ajax, Ont./Minnesota, NHL) Drew Doughty (London, Ont./Los Angeles, NHL) Mike Green (Calgary, Alta./Washington, NHL) Dan Hamhuis (Smithers, B.C./Nashville, NHL) Duncan Keith (Penticton, B.C./Chicago, NHL) Scott Niedermayer (Cranbrook, B.C./Anaheim, NHL) Dion Phaneuf (Edmonton, Alta./Calgary, NHL) Chris Pronger (Dryden, Ont./Philadelphia, NHL) Robyn Regehr (Rosthern, Sask./Calgary, NHL) Stéphane Robidas (Sherbrooke, Que./Dallas, NHL) Brent Seabrook (Tsawwassen, B.C./Chicago, NHL) Marc Staal (Thunder Bay, Ont./N.Y. If he makes it, I'll be estatic. If Lucic makes it I'll be jumping too.

Manoir 70 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 I am absolutely shocked that Andy Mcdonald is on the list and Marc Savard is not. They are both centres and Savard is better than Mcdonald in every aspect of the game. Savard has been a top 10 point producer and still gets no recognition. Surprising that a guy like Yzerman who was also overlooked earlier in his career would not put Savard on the roster.

Guys like Dan Cleary and Jordan Staal were invited because they want a real fourth line. Also, Duncan Keith and Dan Boyle are pretty much locks; Keith is the best defensemen Canada has to offer and Boyle is among the top five. Regehr has a shot, but a slim one. Pronger also is likely to be passed over because of his age and the fact that he's not the dominating force he was even two years ago, and is on a sharp decline while the others are going up and could use the experience; i.e. pick excellent young players in the assumption that most will be on the team in 2014 as well. The goaltending is pretty much a no-brainer. Fleury doesn't belong, Mason is good but hasn't proven he can play under the kind of pressure he'll be facing. Brodeur is the world's best goalie, especially in the clutch. Luongo is one of the best under pressure, and Cam Ward is one of the best under pressure. All three will get some games during round-robin play, with Brodeur likely seeing the primary duty during the tournament.
