Ville Leino signs a 2 year extension

Doesn't make sense. I can tell you right now, we have a bit more 3 mil in cap space, 3.5 tops.

Assuming Helm is on the team, there's 2.3 million left to sign Hudler and one more forward. That includes all 8 of our defensemen.

Great signing ^_^ . This is Leino's real test to prove if he belongs in the NHL. His price is cheap for now ... will see how he performs. I think Holland should now concentrate on re-signing Helm and Ericsson so he won't have to worry about this issue next year.

For those of you wondering why his salary is only 800K instead of the 850K or more, it's because when you're on a 2 way contract like he was last season, he wasn't getting paid 850K while in the minors. He gets his AHL salary, then when he's called up, he's put on the 850K salary paid out normally. And don't forget, players don't get paid in the playoffs. He was essentially getting paid his AHL contract all last season except for like 4 weeks of the season when he saw a big bump up to his 850K salary.

Now that he'll be on the roster full time, he'll be getting at least double what he made last year, all through out the season, which he should be very happy about.

THANK YOU! I learned something today!!! Making a heck of a lot more sense now!!!

This doesn't explain it at all.

His NHL salary was 875K last season (FYI), and according to the CBA his new salary was supposed include a 5% raise. That makes the qualifying offer amount (supposedly) $919,000.

The question here is how Holland could sign him for less than his NHL salary last season. Now there are two options:

1. Because he didn't play a full rookie season last year this 5% raise doesn't apply

2. Holland spread it out so the payment in year two was less and the average hit is 800K.

The question isn't why Leino would accept less, the quetion is why the CBA raise rule for RFA's doesn't factor in here at first glance.

Does this spell the last we'll of Hudler for sure now? This only leaves $2.5 million of cap space (not counting Lilja's.) So unless he and Holland come up with something sub $2.0 million. Signing Hudler will make 11 forwards. Maybe you get some more space by trading Lebda or Lilja. BUT you still need 12 if not 13 forwards and if Hudler takes the most of the cap, it's going to be hard to even include Abdelkader....

I trust Holland to do the right thing for this team... my fingers are crossed...

edit: according to capgeek, Abdelkader is already on the roster so we only have $1.6M. (before trades)

If I had to guess, I'd say it would have to be #1. Why would he offer/Leino accept a deal where he gets paid less as he (theoretically) should be worth more.

I'd go with "vittu joo."

Thanks! I'm posting that every time Filppula or Leino score / make a nice play in next year's GDT threads.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_profanity

Vittu is an ancient word for the female genitalia but now has the literal meaning of "c***." Linguistically, it is used similar to how 'f***' is used in English to add force to a statement or express frustration. Often considered extremely profane, its usage is nowadays not only limited to teenager slang, but is often used as an emphasis in a forceful or frustrated utterance or expression, as in mitä vittua "what the f***". Other common phrases with vittu include voi vittu ("f*** this" or "Oh f***"), ja vitut! ("The f*** you say!" / "Bulls***!"); haista vittu "f*** you!", literally "go smell a c***"; painu (hevon) vittuun, "go to (horse's) c***"; olla naama norsun vitulla, "to have one's face like the elephant's c***", meaning to be sour and unfriendly. Entire sentences can be constructed using these combinations " Vittu, vituttaa niin vitusti" etc. Occasionally, one hears more colorful constructions, such as Vittujen kevät ja kyrpien takatalvi! (paraphrased, "Oh ******* s***!" or literally "The spring of ***** and the late winter of dicks!"). Notably, vittu is also used as an energetic mood, as in "vitun iso" ("******* big") or "Mä meen vittu sinne" ("I'm really ******* going there") or to declare a negative outcome, as in meni vituiksi ("f***ed up"). Similar-sounding euphemistic replacements include hitto (see above), vitsi or hitsi. Several verbs and adjective have also been derived from vittu: vituttaa literally means "to want/need *****", though the meaning of it is actually something like "to feel angry and depressed", vittuuntua "to get angry and insulted", vittumainen an adjective for "unpleasant and annoying".

Vittu joo!

Hey, thats a neat concept, a player taking less than value to play in Detroit! :P

Hey Hudler, take a page from everyone, Sign for $1.5 so we can ice an even better team...

So happy with this, and got him for dirt cheap, considering his 13GP 5G 4A stat line in the regular season is 31G 25A prorated over 82 games. I don't expect a 30-goal season out of Leino yet, but either way....

Cheapest 20-goal player the league will see this year :D

"Filppula tekee maalin" worked pretty well last playoffs. I guess it's our fault for not continuing it with these most recent ones.

Although we could start a new one with "Vittu joo"

"Filppula tekee maalin."

How does that translate exactly?

According to google, it's "Filppula does paint." That's just gross. How do you "do" paint? Call up slutty eggshell white for some practice before you go home to naval orange?

Hahaha, Filppula does paint made me lol for real.

I think literally it's "Filppula scores the goal."

Most online Finnish translators kind of suck, but there's a couple good dictionaries around. This is the one I use, and this is kind of fun to play around with, a text-to-speech thingamajig.

And staying on topic, it's even less than 800k? I *really* wish someone could clarify how this works with the qualifying offer rules.

Filppula scores. Tehdä maali means both "do paint" and "score a goal". But how do you do paint?????

Great signing by Kenny.

If you're interested in the exact numbers, according to MLive:

wut? $778,825 + $775,825 / 2 =/= $800,000.

hmm...looking at the article it says "almost" $800,000. not that that extra $23K-ish is going to do a whole hell of a lot, but still. even better!
