Whats the deal with Oulahan

Apparently this guy has to pass through waivers to become eligible to play in Grand Rapids this year (or so I've gathered). I lazily tried looking up some information on him, but neither hockeydb nor the griffins site had any stats for him, and a quick google search ended unsuccessfully. As a result, I have no idea whether this kid (man?) is too valuable to risk to waivers or whether he even has a career in the nhl. Any education would be appreciated, both on his past as well as his potential future with the Redwings or nhl.

while he's good enough and all, I don't think he will ever turn into much... maybe a 4th liner at best, I wouldn't bother carrying him on the roster and if someone snags him on waivers, it'd be a bummer, but no big deal, he's already almost 25 and doesn't really even crack the top 15 in terms of prospects...

Also, he's not very big, so for a checker... that's a downside... great defensively and great character, but unless he either gets tougher, or gets even faster (he's already pretty quick, but not Darren Helm quick) I don't see him ever being a Wing...

People have always said that cody (despite not being a big guy to begin with) plays smaller than he is. He's a good penalty killer. He is essentially Maltby. Not 1996 Maltby, 2009 Maltby. He isn't good enough to play on Detroit's 1st 2nd or 3rd line, and he doesn't play a 4th line game. I always kinda liked him, but I don't see him doing anything in Detroit. I'd be happy if we shipped him to a shallow team somewhere that was really hurting for a PKer.

Not all draft picks pan out .. doubt anyone would grab him with some "big name" free agents still available .. Big name meaning you recognize it hah .. Hopefully he passes waivers and helps GR out ..

Not bad numbers, I say we give him a chance, and if he doesn't pan out, we cut him loose and try to make a deal at the trade deadline. Of course, if he were a right-handed shot, he would be a lock. :P

No. A team can only provide so many parking spots for guys on the bench who bring nothing but penalty killing. If Maltby would do the Wings a favor and retire, then I think Oulahan would be a lock to be shoved into his spot. I can't see the Wings dressing both of them.

From last season's roster only Samuelsson, Hudler, Holmström and Abdelkader didn't play on PK. Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Draper are all Selke winners or candidates while Filppula, Cleary, Franzén, Helm and Maltby aren't bad defensively either.

Yeah, we're not hurting for PKers. We need just need our PKers to play up to the level they're showed themselves capable of in '07-'08. In fact swap Drake for Helm, and we've got exactly the same PK units as our Cup year. Last season nobody was focused on defense. I believe a focused Osgood will do wonders for the overall team defense.

I suppose those aren't bad numbers for a bottom six forward in the AHL, but if that's all he can do in the minors can we even expect half that production in the NHL? If that's the case he wouldn't really be an upgrade except in youth (and inexperience).

Right, Maltby WILL retire after 2010, so make him your 13th forward now and let him see spot duty ths season (kinda like Chelios.) Then you have Meech and or Lebda as your 7th defensman...

...what sucks is, Holland isn't gonna do anything until Hudler-gate is taken care of so we aren't going to have ANY news until after that hearing. No signings, no UFA action, no nothing! Hey Jiri, why don't you make like a tree and get out of here!

How the heck is hockeydb going to work for you, but tell me Ryan Oulahen isn't in their database?? Thanks for the numbers, by the way.

The point of posting the numbers is mainly because the OP said he/she could not find them anywhere. I personally could care less if he is an upgrade or a downgrade, I'm just saying that we wouldn't be risking much by bringing him up if we can't land a UFA to fill in the 3rd/4th line vacancy, and we all know how our organization hates letting prospects go through waivers (ala Kyle Quincey) unless it's absolutely necessary.

1. Absolutely, slot Oulahan in with a two-way. Even if Maltby doesn't retire. We're not going to resign him. Right? If it doesn't pan out with Oulahan, you package him up and ship him out at the deadline or waive him.

2. This is really ruining your offseason isn't it LeftWinger.

Ryan Oulahen A-

Oulahen has done all he can at the AHL level, and the next logical step is to see whether he can play in the NHL. He listened to the Wings and added some snarl to his already defensively responsible game. The result was an increase in offense as he just missed his first 20-goal season, a mark he surely would have reached if not for his season ending dislocated hip. He is expected to make a complete recovery, and should earn a new contract from Detroit (NHL). His return is uncertain however, as he will have to pass through waivers before being assigned to GR and another NHL team may take a chance on the 24-year-old center.

Has he even been resigned yet?

Yes he has.

I like Oulahan and think he deserves a shot on the Wings. I think he'd make a good, solid 4th liner and will come very cheap. If we're struggling to find a player to take a spot on the 4th line then we could do a lot worse than put Ryan there. He's a great defensive forward, is good on the PK and is a terrific leader. Look at the struggles to the Griffins had when he departed from their line-up.

He's still listed as a free agent at NHL.com thats why I was wondering.

I whole-heartedly agree that Oulahen deserves a shot to make the Wings out of camp. His defensive skill and PK ability would be greatly appreciated on the Wings right now.

Are you sure he's re-signed with the Wings? I'm pretty up to date in all the Wings news (I'm pretty obsessive-compulsive when it comes to the Red Wings). I haven't heard a peep about it.

I do know that the Wings tendered qualifying offers to the following players this offseason:

-->Hudler, Leino, McGrath and Oulahen.

Of those 4 only Leino was signed and to my knowledge, only Hudler filed for arbitration. That leaves McGrath and Oulahen exposed to an offer sheet (about as likely as Holland growing a second head).

Where did you read that Oulahen re-signed?

Strong defensively, good PKer, good leader, canadian, send him to Downeys potato farm for a couple of weeks and I'm sold.

Maybe a short trip to Barry Bond's training facility beforehand would help also. Figure he could add 30 Lbs. of muscle in about a month of training with Barry. :P

He does seem like a viable option though. After the Quincey incident, I really have a desire to actually try our draftees out with the big club before we just go and give another team a hand wrapped gift. It would actually be nice to leave enough cap space to be able to bring some Griffins up for a test run without it having to be from LTIR funds. But then again, if we don't spend right to the cap, noone will be able to say we buy our Cups.

Exactly and he comes cheap. Wings don't need to make any sign any named FAs, we'll probably run with this kid and, perhaps, sign an impressive invitee during camp. I'm ready for the season to start already!
