Yeah, its when the ref thinks you tried to put someone into the boards with too much aggression. Not trying to hit him to get him off the puck but too just put him through the boards. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted July 17, 2009 I don't know. He looks kind of soft. Tall enough, and certainly big, but didn't seem all that physical. Got the puck taken away way too easily. Couldn't hold his own in a fight, although there was that uncalled Third Man In penalty. Didn't seem to have a lot of speed. He'd be a 4th liner at best, but I can see him being a fan favourite. Cute video. I enjoyed it.

Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted July 17, 2009 (edited) Also can anyone give me a description or video of boarding? I seemed to get that call allot when leveling kids full on near the boards .. From the official NHL rules Rule 42 - Boarding 42.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee. There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player (or goalkeeper) applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a vulnerable position and if so, he must avoid the contact. However, there is also a responsibility on the player with the puck to avoid placing himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule. Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious “icing†or “off-side†play which results in that player being knocked into the boards is “boarding†and must be penalized as such. In other instances where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as “charging.†42.2 Minor Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a minor penalty, based on the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, to a player or goalkeeper guilty of boarding an opponent. 42.3 Major Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a major penalty, based on the degree of violence of the impact with the boards, to a player or goalkeeper guilty of boarding an opponent (see 42.5). 42.4 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player or goalkeeper attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent by boarding. 42.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed. 42.6 Fines and Suspensions - Any player or goalkeeper who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under Rule 42 and/or Rule 44, in either Regular season or Play-offs, shall be suspended automatically for the next game of his team. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game. When a major penalty is imposed under this rule, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) shall be imposed. If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 29) . ahh .. I still think its a grey area penelty .. yeah its definitely one of those calls that are grey area. Yeah there is a lot of gray area, they designed it that way because it would absolutely impossible to have a bright line rule (as opposed to a rule like offsides) so they give the referee a lot of discretion to may judge the call.
