Hudler's Arbitration Hearing Today

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

First, I wanted to know if anyone knew what time the hearing was scheduled for? Second I wanted to know what everyone thought the award would be for. We know that Holland and the Wings are asking for a two year deal. I feel like the contract that will be awarded to him will be in the $3.5-3.6M/yr range. Any thoughts?

Since everythign that's been said so far about the NHL not being able to stop Hudler going to the KHL I think that's what we should be hoping for in this arbitration hearing; getting a good valued contract if he ever comes back. He could end up coming back that much better in two years and this contract could be a bargain. Or he could come back as crap and we're screwed.

Does anyone know how that works? If HUdler decides to come back after two years the Wings automatically have to honour the contract? Or do they get a say since the contract is beign signed today with the itention (from the Wings end) that it is for the 2009-10 season? I'd imagined they would have to honour it but Im not sure

Wings can reject it in the coming days, but if they accept Hudler is pretty much their property if he ever comes back to the NHL (even past the age of 27). They of course can trade (or waive, buy-out, etc.) him at that time.

Apparently the Wings are asking for 3 million a year and his agent is asking for 4 million a year. Whatever contract is offered the Wings won't walk away. But Hudler will most likely defect to the KHL. When he defects the Wings will hold his rights and he will be legally obligated to fulfill the terms of the contract set by the arbiter when he returns to the NHL in two years.

In essence the Wings won't lose his rights, he'll just be shelved for two years (or possibly one if he decides he hates the KHL).

Hudler probably would have been awarded around $3.5 had he just sat around and waited for the hearing. I would not be surprised if his award will be closer to $3m because of his signing with the KHL. Also, the KHL has said that, pending the outcome of the arbitration tomorrow, they will not register Hudler's contract if the Wings agree to the contract awarded tomorrow. The IIHF has stated they will not issue a transfer card, which would be required for Hudler to play in the KHL, to Hudler if the Wings accept the contract.

So assuming all of that information has been reported accurately, then if the Wings accept the contract awarded to Hudler tomorrow, the question pretty much is about how Holland clears cap space, not what league Hudler is playing in this coming season.

Eva,

That's not how I understood it, I know there has been a lot of misinformation floating around but I think the Wings are going to accept the offer unless it's just outrageous then the KHL is going to ask Hudler where he plans to play, if he still wants to play in the KHL he can but upon returning to the NHL in two years, five years, etc he would have to honor his NHL contract. They Wings are merely going through with the arbitration because one, they are required to, and two they don't want to walk away and loose Hudlers rights for nothing.

I believe that part is either a mistranslation or was intended to be a bit of BSing. George Malik believes the KHL will take Hudler regardless of what the results of the arbitration hearing are. Malik isn't the be all and end all, but I believe he's right on the mark when he says the president of the KHL is likely to go back on his word if it suits him.

Read.

Medvedev on KHL not registering contract if Wings agree to it.

KHL is IIHF member league and has agreed to IIHF no-poaching policy. IIHF must sign ITC for Hudler to play in KHL.

Does that help clarify things?

Hudler's agent, Petr Svoboda, told Red Wings general manager Ken Holland he is confident the 25-year-old left wing will be allowed to play for Moscow Dynamo of the Kontinental Hockey League.

"They have no intention of negotiating a settlement, they want the case heard before an arbitrator," Holland said. "My sense is he's going to play in Russia next season."

The salary arbitration hearing establishes the contract Hudler must honor if and when he returns to the NHL. It has no bearing on determining the validity of the two-year, $10 million (tax-free) deal he signed July 8 with Dynamo, which the NHL has challenged.

Holland said he now will focus on signing one or two free-agent forwards with the little money he has left to spend

That's from Khan(!) on the 22nd. Long after Medvedev made his statement on the transfer card. Holland expects the Hudler won't be here in October. I have no reason to doubt him. On top of that the KHL club has released a statement saying they expect Hudler to be there for camp on August 10th.

Edit: fixed the name

Just because someone says something doesn't mean it's true.

Don't even bother man. I showed him the exact same stuff. The fact that the information was released well after Medvedev's comments, etc. This is why I've been quiet about the issue, waiting for tomorrow when the decision is made. The above comment was more for my own personal amusement than anything else.

What KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN quotes Holland as saying is that he expects Hudler to still defect after the arbitration. If the KHL and IIHF follow through with what they have said and Hudler CANNOT play in the KHL if the Wings accept the award, Hudler will be playing in the NHL or nowhere because he will not have an IIHF transfer card and will not be able to play in any of the Euro leagues, and his KHL contract will not be registered by the league management.

Of course, this is pending on the KHL and IIHF following through with what they have said; and all I have quoted earlier is what they said. If they follow through, Hudler is in the NHL this coming season.

Yeah, but I don't think for a second that the KHL will follow through on their promises.

I'd love to have Hudles back. You know I'm a huge fan of his. I just don't trust the KHL.

Current signed players expected to be on the 2009-10 roster:

F: Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Dan Cleary, Tomas Holmstrom, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Ville Leino, Darren Helm

D: Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Brad Stuart, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson, Brett Lebda, Derek Meech

G: Chris Osgood, Jimmy Howard

*-Andreas Lilja is expected to be on LTIR and therefore is not included.

This leaves $3,779,345 in available cap space to sign a minimum of two forwards. Under the assumption that one of those forwards will be Ryan Oulahen or Evan McGrath, and assuming both are signed for $500k, that means that Detroit has $3,279,345 to sign a minimum of one forward. Furthermore, under the assumption that Andy Delmore was signed for $500k, Brett Lebda could be dealt for picks and/or prospects and replaced on the roster by Delmore, increasing the available cap space to $3,429,345. As there is a very good chance Hudler's arbitration award will be sub-3.4m, this means that Detroit could likely fit Hudler under the cap with only a minor move (Lebda trade) that does not involve giving up any players of any significance.

Interesting take on the whole KHL league head saying this and that and nobody expecting it to be true. One thing that I think WILL be true is that since the IIHF will not approve of this defection/poaching, he will not be cleared for international play, correct? So then its no Olympic/Worlds for Jiri?

If he goes to the KHL and the Wings accept the contract award, then Hudler cannot play in the Olympics or Worlds. That is correct.
