Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted August 15, 2009 Because, statistically, our highest goals per game in the NHL saved our asses. Now that Hossa, Sammy, and Huds are gone...not so much. Not trying to derail the thread, but a I've got a good feeling most of those goals are going to be recouped from within -- Hank had an off year, Franzen can do better -- and with the additions of Leino and Williams (not crazy about the guy but he can score during the season). But it's neither here nor there, since no possible future outcome could be as putrid as the Wings defense/goaltending last season.

Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2009 Because, statistically, our highest goals per game in the NHL saved our asses. Now that Hossa, Sammy, and Huds are gone...not so much. Because (not statistically), Detroit's defense was perhaps the worst it has been in a very long time, and the team was more concentrated on offense.
cjm502 165 Report post Posted August 15, 2009 Howard will do good. When we let him play before he sucked every time, but im guessing that is because of the pressure that was on him. He will get used to it.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Kind of a moot discussion, I think. Howard would have to be spectacularly s***ty for the Wings to give up on him after anything less than a full season. They've invested too much in his development for that. A vet. backup would be nice to have on the bench just in case.
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 If Howard doesn't work out I can see Holland bringing in Vet back-up goalie. Not sure who we could get and when it would happen but if I were Holland I would want to stop the bleeding as quick as possible so I think that Kenny will know about Howard within a the first couple of months of the regular season. I don't think Kenny will bring up Larsson or McCollum yet, they both need more development so I think the only option would be to bring in a Vet back-up. Hopefully we are all just saying what if here. We need to give Howard a chance before we start speculating what we may or may not need to do.
redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 mccollum is going to tear up GR and if/when one of ozzie/howard is sucking or injured he will get the call and pull a steve mason during the season, then to top it off he will pull a cam ward in the playoffs
Lidstrom for Norris 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 Yes i do think Kenny will go for another tender if Howard doesn't pan out. If this were to happen my first pick would be Fernandez, hands down.

redwingcapt 52 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 I love how people are ready to just rip jimmy apart before he gets a chance, well guess what guys, everytime jimmy came up the red wings were in the middle of there anual 10-12 game struggle. nicky L and kroner and raffy were all hurt then and he didnt play that bad.. he kept the team in the game he played and the wings were just struggling. put him in a situation to win in a helathy line up and see what happens. e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 I don't think anyone is "ripping him apart." We're definitely over analyzing every angle of this situation before he's truly gotten a fair shake. Certainly. ...but it's summer and we're bored!
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 As a Wings fan, love the idea of Biron coming over if Howard doesn't pan out. As an Islander's watcher, the biggest problem with Howard coming to the Isle is that they need solid goaltending NOW. You know, other than the three starter-level goaltenders they have on the roster. Oh and, BTW, if they end up trading a goalie, it will be Roloson as he costs more than Biron, is not as happy with being a backup/tandem goalie, is older, and is not as good. Yes, he'll bring less in return, but with Dipietro's injury issues the Isles would need to keep the best second option around even if Dipietro were healthy for now. They will definitely try to trade Roloson before Biron. ...but for all the aforementioned reasons, Eva. Biron is the easier piece to move. ...and there will be more inquiry into Biron's availability than Rolly. 3. I will be very surprised if DiPietro plays more than a handful of games this season. Just sayin'. Edited August 16, 2009 by e_prime
wingfanatic4alltime 32 Report post Posted August 16, 2009 As most people have said i think a lot depends on Ozzie if ozzie has a great regular season and Howard craps the bed then i think you will see Larsson up; where as if Ozzie has a bad regular season then im sure Kenny will get a veteran backup i really wouldnt mind seeing Biron here. Cujo and Manny i believe are gonna retire so im not too worried about that.
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted August 18, 2009 I'm not so much concerned about if Jimmy Howard is going to work out or not. If Kenny Holland didn't think that Howard was ready to be an NHL Back-Up goalie I think he would have pulled the plug on him and let him go and maybe kept Conklin until Larsson or McCollum were able to come up. My biggest quesiton is how long will Howard be with the Wings? Once Ozzie retires depending on how his development goes I think McCollum will be the Wings goalie of the Future. Is Howie going to want to be a back-up for his entire career or will he get a chance to be a starting goalie with Detroit in a few years? If he doesn't get a chance to be a starter and thinks that he can how long will he be happy in Detroit? That's the biggest question for me; not so much will he be an ok back-up for Ozzie this season.
