Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 (edited) And the NHL extended it's contract with Versus through the 2010-2011 season.... what a bunch of morons..... worst network ever... Buttman screws the fans again. There are only 5 exclusive Red Wing games during the regular season... don't care about those..... but it is the exclusive PLAYOFF GAMES that will tick me off! Buttman screws the fans again. There are only 5 exclusive Red Wing games during the regular season... don't care about those..... but it is the exclusive PLAYOFF GAMES that will tick me off! There's 9 exclusive Red Wings games on Versus during the season. That's over 10% of the Wings' regular season. In other words......I care. Bottom line, I pay what I do in order to get every single Wings game. I don't mind paying what I do, but I expect to see every game.
asmith18 3 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 I'm so pissed right now! We've had directv for years and was so happy I never missed a wings game because I have FSDetroit/Wings, Versus, NBC, and any other channel it was on. Now just have to go to bars to watch the wings game even though I live in Michigan.
Kira 451 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 I just got off the phone with Direct and they are still negotiating with Versus. I told them they'd better get it straightened out before hockey season starts or there are gonna be an awful lot of ticked off fans beating down their doors. I can still watch most of the games on Fox Sports Detroit, but for the ones that they don't show, there had better be an alternative somewhere. Hopefully Center Ice will help out as well. Games broadcasted on Versus are exlusive, meaning CenterIce can't play them.

The dumb ass NHL took down atdhe last year, which was by far the best free streaming website. I'm fully convinced that this league doesn't want its fans to watch its games. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 ESPN needs to get hockey back. Sometimes I'd watch the ESPN broadcast over the CBC one if they were being played on both, Gary Thorne was just a heck of an announcer.

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Are you honestly complaining about the NHL taking down a site that was stealing money out of their pockets by illegally showing games for free? What money? The league is fortunate anyone watched their games, whether it was online or not. First they leave espn, then they pull online streaming sites, and now versus may leave DirecTV. Pretty soon the league will force all hockey games to be played in the dark, so that fans can't see the games at all, even if they're in the arena.

Pretty soon the league will force all hockey games to be played in the dark, so that fans can't see the games at all, even if they're in the arena. If you truly believe that, why do you bother watching the NHL then? Bottom line is that every league makes mistakes and does things that not all fans agree with. Do I wish they could've come to a solid agreement with ESPN: Absolutely. Do I understand why they left: Without a doubt. Next you blame the NHL for shutting down sites that steal money from them illegally, which is absolutely ridiculous. Now, Versus is struggling with DirecTV which is no different than what happened to the Big10 Network last year and Fox HD for far too long. These snags happen, but to blame the NHL because DirecTV and Versus are fighting each other is ridiculous. How the hell where they supposed to foresee that over 3 years after the deal was signed? There's expectations and unrealistic complaining. TBH, you're claim falls under the latter.

I love hockey, and the NHL is the most talented league in the world, which is why I watch (assuming I will watch next year if this deal doesn't go through). However, they've done a lot of things to alienate its own fanbase, the biggest one being the lockout and going on some network nobody has ever heard of. It's just one mistake after another, and as long as that clown Bettman is around, many fans are going to point fingers at the NHL's incompetence.

I don't disagree with any of this, because this has nothing to do with what I initially asked you in this thread. You're complaing about the fact that the NHL (which is a *business*) shut down a site that was illegally stealing money out of its pockets by broadcasting its games for free. Do you see what I'm getting at? This has nothing to do with the things you listed above.
Guest micah Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Are you honestly complaining about the NHL taking down a site that was stealing money out of their pockets by illegally showing games for free? I am. The very few games that I streamed were games that the NHL would not sell me. When I streamed video it weas as a last resort, and I suspect many are like that. I pay for Center Ice. I think that every hockey fan who can aford it pays for Center Ice, it is superior to the online feeds in every way. While the streamhosts certainly were breaking the law, they were not losing the NHL any money. If anything, they were providing an avenue for fans to watch more games and more closely follow hockey - something the league should appreciate.

I understand the business side of it, but of course people are going to stream games if they don't have Versus, which many people have never even heard of as a a channel. So in a way, the league is to blame for online streaming and its increase. People can't watch the games on TV, so they steal it off the internet.

Are you telling me that you don't have the option of subscribing to Time Warner, DirecTV or DISH network, etc.? If that's the case, then you truly don't have the opportunity to see *every* game but as long as those (as well as others) are available *you do* have an avenue to not miss a game. It's just up to you whether or not you'll pursue. I did with the switch to DirecTV. I am. The very few games that I streamed were games that the NHL would not sell me. Practically every single person no matter where they live has the option of subscribing to DirecTV or DISH which both offer Versus in their programming. It's simply a matter of people switching from cable if their provider doesn't offer it. Stating that you *can't* get games is false. The fact is, the provider *you've* chosen doesn't offer Versus. That's not the league's fault.

I don't want to change providers again because of the NHL. Most people have espn, so I don't think nearly as much illegal streaming would occur as it does now, if the NHL was on a major network. How come the other leagues don't crack down the way the NHL did on illegal streaming?
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 The fact that these leagues sign these "exclusive" contracts with providers is what pisses me off. I don't want to have to switch my provider everytime I want to enjoy a season of the sport I choose whether it's NHL, NFL or whatever. Just like here in San Diego, you HAVE to have cable or you can't watch the Padres. Dish and Direct TV carry no Padres games and they're the local team for Christ sakes! Plus, the blackout deals these teams/owners have just make it all that much worse. I pay extra, a lot extra actually, to see all my team's games, and yet I STILL don't seem to see them all because of some douchebag's exclusive contract with the venue or the network or the provider or whatever. Bottom line for me is, if I pay for NHL Center Ice, I should have the ability to watch any and all games regardless of network. esteef

How come the other leagues don't crack down the way the NHL did on illegal streaming? Bingo. It doesn't mean you *can't* get games. That, along with the league having every right to shut down a site that was illegally streaming their feeds were my only points. I wasn't arguing any of the other points you made, because I completely agree that the obstacles we the fans of the NHL have had to deal with have become tiresome and annoying. For a sport that's trying to be as mainstream as possible it sure seems like a few too many hoops being jumped through for what their goal should be. The fact that these leagues sign these "exclusive" contracts with providers is what pisses me off.
