40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/...sia?eref=fromSI Apparently, the KHL isn't done raiding the Red Wings. Already having signed Jiri Hudler , the Russian hockey league now is after Darren McCarty. The rugged, popular veteran forward is in Moscow pursuing possibilities in the league, which begins its season in mid-September.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 I love how the article says raiding. Yeah I'm sure the Wings really care if the KHL signs a guy that is an UFA and they weren't planning on signing. That damn KHL. /sarcasm

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Bad, bad bad idea McCarty. There are plenty of places in North America you could play. Playing in the KHL will do nothing but make you lonely and isolated, which will lead to the things that messed you up in the first place. I do find it interesting that the KHL, filled with weak, fast skaters, would be after someoen like McCarty, though. Unless Hudler told them to do it.

Unless Hudler told them to do it. Publicity stunt. A guy like McCarty (or any other aging vet that's been relocated) might bring some fans to the seats and improve KHL ratings, thus improving KHL reputation, and hopefully in time for them, bring in real superstars who would rather play for a respected league at home than overseas. Other than the beer leagues I don't think anyone will be beating down the door to sign him for an actual salary. If the KHL is willing to pay him anything over 200,000$ that's more than he'll make over here even if he happened by some miracle to catch on with an ECHL or IHL team. There wouldn't be many AHL teams looking to bring him in either as he's certainly no "prospect" at this stage of his career and bringing him in to mentor younger players wouldn't necessarily be a smart move either unless they're looking for advice on how to orchestrate an intervention lol. His days of being an enforcer on a team are over as he would get his ass handed to him by any of the legit enforcers on any AHL team, all of whom will be bigger, stronger and younger than Mac at this point. If the KHL wants to bring him in for name recognition value then by all means Mac should go for it. Hopefully he views it as an opportunity to travel and make some connections rather than a season long vodka road trip. Yup. McCarty the player has zero value. McCarty the draw might have some. Heck, they took Chris Simon. I agree with the above posters who don't think it's a good idea for a guy who's had money and substance abuce problems in the past to go live in Russia. I am being 100% serious when I say I would rather make $20k/yr at McDonnald's than move to Russia and make $3 mil/yr doing my dream job. Thanks but no thanks. Western europe, Scandanavia, australia, Canada? In a heartbeat. Russia? Hell no. No good comes from being a well-known wealthy public figure in Russia with no strong local connections. Guest micah Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Sounds like Huder would be a good influence on him Huds is an idiot for going to the KHL and McCarty is an idiot if he's even remotely considering it - but if those two ever share a hotel room in Moscow I want to be there too. I'm getting older and I'm not sure my system could survive all the mobsters, coke, and chlamydia sure to be making it's way around the room - but it would be fun to try. FinWing 26 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Unsurprising, KHL seems to be willing to pick up all NHL outcasts.
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Mac was a great player for us there's no doubt but I think his time in the NHL is done, if he can go and play more and make a little more money I wish him the best. He wasn't going to get a contract with the Wings and probably wasn't going to get a contract in the NHL so if he still wants to play and can play than I say let him go to the KHL and see what he can do. TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Normally I would be pretty pissed off after hearing of yet another NHLer moving to the KHL. But in this case, I actually hope it happens. McCarty is obviously not good enough anymore to play in the NHL. So I think he should definitely go to the KHL. That way he can still make a living playing hockey. I wish D-Mac the best. Hope he plays somewhere.

I worry about him off in a cold, deslote place like Calgary. If he's in Moscow, he should be OK, as I hear it is a rather nice civilized place. I just hope he isn't in Siberia.
