Kane gets away with it

hmmmm your thoughts?

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane pleaded guilty Thursday to a non-criminal charge of disorderly conduct and was ordered to apologize to a Buffalo cab driver over a fare dispute.

Kane, 20, and his cousin, James Kane, 21, were given conditional discharges, meaning they will avoid any penalties if they stay out of trouble for a year and apologize to cabbie Jan Radecki.

"Obviously I want to apologize to my family, the city of Buffalo, my team, the whole Blackhawks organization, obviously all the fans out there, my fans especially, just for being in a regrettable situation," Kane said. "But it's behind me. It's time to move on."

Kane was accompanied to the courthouse by his parents.

In court, defense lawyer Paul Cambria said Kane is a law-abiding person and an outstanding athlete.

"He desires to be a tremendous role model and I believe that he is," Cambria said.

...

Unsurprising.

Had to comment on the bolded portion above. Just strikes me as funny, since his althetic ability isn't at all relevant to the case. I guess I should think it's sad the priviledge we afford pro athletes.

My uncle was one of his coaches with Honeybaked. When I called to congratulate him on his drafting, he referred to him as a "little snot". That should say all you need to know about this kid.

Actually I heard something similar from a peewee coach. Apparently this guy held practices at a place that some of the Blackhawks frequently go to to practice (I assume its kind of like the Troy Sports Center of Chicago), and sometimes he tries to set up a couple minutes between practices where the kids can skate with the players. From what he says, everyone is always eager to spend time with the kids except Kane, who is pretty impatient with the whole thing.

I don't know if its true or not, but after hearing about this taxi thing and then your experience, Zion, I'm pretty convinced that its accurate.

Oh, there's more:

- WGR had an interview with him during this past season, and I remember getting a bad taste hearing him say that signing autographs after practice "gets a little annoying", this just after talking to my uncle

- our custodial engineer spends good money to put his kid through Hasek's Heroes program, IIRC (they played a game at the Joe a few months ago), and said they had a practice AFTER Kane was on the ice with some friends in town (around the time this occurred) and as they got the kids all excited about the possibility of maybe getting a quick skate with him before they left, he got off the ice, signed a whopping 4 autographs, and split, leaving the rest of the kids behind (though in fairness, he was probably trying to get out before people noticed and he got mobbed)

I'm surprised that he didn't even have to pay to have the cabbie's glasses fixed. I mean come on, not even a fine. Community service? Nothing.

Wow.

The ******* should have at least done some community service.

Not surprised that nothing happened. Now had it been a dog driving that cab? We're talking, what, 2 to 3 years prison time?

Of course. Had it been any of us regular joes, we would be serving a deservedly stiff sentence. Or had one of us killed a pedestrian while driving drunk. Or had we driven off a bridge while drunk and left a woman to die. Just don't accidentally shoot yourself...apparently that gets anyone into prison.

The absolute classic arrogant line from a professional athlete was when NBA player Gilbert Arenas said, "You can't arrest me, I'm a basketball player!"

I think what pisses me off the most is that Kane is still going to be the little media darling. Now that Pittsburgh won their Stanley Cup, you know the NHL wants nothing more than to have Chicago win it and Kane sitting like a little cherry on top. He will still be on the cover of the video game. He will still be in commercials. And NBC and VS will still encourage little kids to look up to him.
