All these guys could have 30-60 points next year, with spots open on the second power play as well as 2nd line -- who will earn those minutes and register the most points?

Filppula

2009: 80 GP 12 G 28 A 40 PTS

.50 PPG

Leino

2009: 13 GP 5 G 4 A 9 PTS

.69 PPG

Williams

2006: 80 GP 21 G 37 A 58 PTS

.73 PPG

Cleary

2009: 74 GP 14 G 26 A 40 PTS

.54 PPG

Bertuzzi

2009: 66 GP 15 G 29 A 44 PTS

.67 PPG

Eaves

2006: 58 GP 20 G 9 A 29 PTS

.50 PPG

I voted Williams -- simply because I think he has the least competition for the 2nd Power Play Unit, a righty on the point who has been there before.

Not a single other player up there is a lock for the 2nd line or 2nd PP... and there could be a lot of shuffling.

Unless Williams screws it up pretty bad (very possible) I think he will have the most time of all of them on the PP.

Filppula is a lock for the 2nd line Center, he'll have Franzen on one side and one of either Williams, Bertuzzi, or Leino on his other side. Whoever gets slotted on Filppula's other wing could even the playing field, but I think Filppula's playmaking skills are superior to both and if he ever learns to shoot the puck, he'll be all that much more dangerous with his newly found ice time.

Filppula should be a safe bet at 20-40-60 this season. I'd love to see the lines:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Cleary

Franzen-Filppula-Leino

Bertuzzi-Helm-Williams

Holmstrom-Draper-Eaves

Especially if Leino has worked, as reported, on his skating and his defense, both being his weak points.

I dont see flip going over 50 points this year, a 50% increase in scoring this year, while id love it, is probably not going to happen. But, since im on the Leino bandwagon, im gunna say he gets 1 more point then Flipper this year.

despite the talk lately that filp can and never will be that breakout scorer that we all want... i still hold out hope that he will be. Even though we all said it last year too, this year HAS to be his breakout year. Filp will establish himself this season an elite 2nd liner and will start off the season very strongly, unlike years past.

Filppula - 21-35-56

Cleary - 26-28-54

Bertuzzi - 21-31-52

Williams - 19-26-45

Leino - 16-12-28

Eaves - 9-13-22

It's as much about how I hope players are used as how I expect them to be. Leino and Williams mostly on the third line, Eaves on the 4th, Cleary and Bert moving around on all the top 3 lines, Flip 2nd line. Just as likely that Cleary spends most of his time with Pav and Hank and so gets another 10-15 points.

He has a larger role on the team this year, as opposed to last year when his role actually diminished with the Hossa signing.

Agreed.

Many here think Filppula will find his scoring touch, and nab 60 plus during the reg season (I wish)...I honestly don't see that happening...He'll continue to be a 40-50 point guy, and Williams will manage 50-55 with the time on the pp.

You guys don't think Filppula will receive any power play time?

I think he will be given the benefit of the doubt at the beginning of the season, but might struggle to maintain it.

Flip's playmaking usually comes about from generating opportunities with his strong backchecking and puck-carrying abilities (at even strength) -- and not necessarily from quick, accurate passes or going strong to the net -- so I am not sure if he will ever be that strong of a PP performer.

One thing that might keep him on it is he is strong at faceoffs -- Williams is decent but will probably be on the point; Cleary and Franzen seem to be good, but do not take nearly as much.

Ultimately, I just see Filppula, Leino, Bertuzzi and Cleary rotating in and out of the 2nd PP unit for a while before something sticks.

I voted Flip. I'm hoping a full time Bert/Flip/Mule line will be cemented in the 2nd line slot and Flip will be an assist machine. I can dream.

Im going to put my money on Big Bert :)
