Heatley traded to Sharks for Michalek, Cheecho, 2nd Round Pick

Well this trade really doesn’t bother me, SJ has proven they are not a good playoff team. They will win their division, the conference and probably the president trophy again, but does anyone really see them getting out of the 2nd round just because they've added Heatly to an already flaud playoff team? I think not.

It's been a pretty wild morning and afternoon for me...friends have been emailing and calling me well before I was ready to get up. :P

The big move that many Sharks fans were hoping for finally happened. Personally I was kinda hoping more to acquire Kessel, but that being said, I'm happy to get Heatley without giving up Marleau. Heatley with Thornton will no doubt be a dangerous combination. Cheechoo is really more of a 3rd line player and rarely creates his own offense. I loved his scrappy play but he's probably a little overpaid. Michalek is a great talent but doesn't usually go to the tough areas to score the goals that you need to when the going gets tough (playoffs anyone?). He never reached the level many were hoping for and he was also a little overpaid. Shedding those two plus a 2nd round pick for Heatley is something I can live with. It remains to be seen how much Heatley will give here in SJ. I have no doubt at the beginning he will play his ass off, but what happens down the road if things don't turn out well....will we have a repeat performance of what just happened with the Sens? Hopefully things go well in SJ and it never comes to that, as Heatley's contract runs through the '13-'14 season.

Just like always for me, things look fine...but I'll never really know until playoff time comes around. Talk to me in June. :P

I think Thornton and Heater are going to be an absolutely lethal combonation, but he's not that kind of player either.

Very true, but he also has a lot more pure scoring ability and wont need to as much. They may end up putting Clowe with those two on that top line at some point to get that grit/dirty area guy that can finish the rebounds and screen the goalie. Clowe fits that role nicely.

Hmm...

Alfredsson, Spezza, Kovalev, Michalek, Fisher, and Cheechoo? Very solid top six.

I have to think you go with Michalek on the top line, and put Kovalev on the left side opposite Cheechoo with Fisher centering the second line since Kovalev is the best playmaker of the three and Cheechoo needs to be with a solid playmaker, but shouldn't be on the top line assuming he can even play the left side.

I think the Sharks made a huge mistake here though. Yes, Cheechoo is overpaid based on some lucky production with Thornton feeding him. But Michalek is a big, strong winger who is a good skater and a capable scorer. And he's 24. If the team weren't in cap hell, maybe it's not a bad move because it's comparable in importance to the team to Detroit trading Filppula, Cleary, and a second for Heatley.

In other words, the trade is basically a young player just coming into his prime who is already a top-line player in the league, plus a support player with decent scoring ability and a pick. The primary asset is by far the young player, and the support player and pick are mostly included in the deal to balance salary and to give Ottawa a bit more return so they get more production from the deal now in case the young player suddenly turns bust.

I say he hits 48 goals since he is going into a system with a little more D responsibilities.

As for the trade itself it is hard to say who won. Sends did add more depth but they could of gotten more. SJ got a pure goal scorer but nothing that really solves their issues. Even trade I think.

I dont get how players specifically michalek and cheecho cannot just absolutely hate heatley for this. I mean imagine how much this has changed their life just because a player with an attitude did not like what team he was on.

I realize this is every day NHL business but i was just thinking how pissed off i would be if i was in their situation. On the other hand though i think cheecho might be happy to play in a new environment.

Doubtful, given the Sens' position, I think they did well...

I wouldn't be pissed if I was them. They'll be playing in a great hockey environment with some pretty good players as teammates. Also, they won't have to travel as often as playing for San Jose.

Yeah thats what i was saying but still, they are human beings like us. If you know what i mean its like some angry kid with an attitude doesnt like his situation so it f***s with your career. Like i said its all part of the business but it would be really annoying to me if it were to not work out in Ottawa.

Kind of the trade I was expecting when I heard Heatley was going to SJ possibly... I think this is beneficial to both sides, and I'm sure Heatley's happy that he won't be in Ottawa too much, I mean the boos might not bother him, but the risk of him getting beer bottles thrown at is a possibility.

It was a decent trade by Ottawa. Sucks though. Smid Penner and Cogliano would have been a better return.

Interesting point by Eklund that if a player demands a trade it should waive the no trade clause because otherwise it ruions the market for that player.http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/Should-Demanding-a-Trade-Void-a-NTC-The-Fallout-Of-Heatley-Deal-RUMORS/1/22925

Glass bottles at a hockey game? Ottawa must be the friendliest place on earth

Detroit trading Filppula, Cleary, and a second for Heatley.

I'd do that deal. Heatley is guaranteed 40-50 goals. Flippula will get better offensively, but will never a 80 point guy, Cleary has a lot of heart, and a clutch performer, but still though. I get you're point, but it's a toss up deal in both cases.

Last year we've seen how good 40 goal scorer was in the finals. Depth and heart are much more important in the play-offs and "one more Cleary" would have made the difference... I would never trade Fil, Cleary and second for Heatley alone.
