Brad May to Play on Friday (and Friday's Line Up)

May ====== tremendous waste of roster space and money.

At least Maltby knows how to skate, who to get the puck to, and has a general idea of where the opponents net is located.

woah woah woah, were talking Brad May here not Aaron Downey, and i'd love to see Maltby take the body as much as May does, at this stage i'd say they are even both with their own weaknesses.

Is the balance really that much better on Team B? Team B definitely has a better checking line in terms of defensive skill (noting that Williams is terrible defensively, but at least he isn't playing the defensively demanding role of centre on Team B). The s***ty part here is that moving Filppula up to the 2nd line puts the top 3 defensive-offensive combo centres on the top two lines. The Wings simply don't have a fourth centre with offensive up-side but still plays excellent defense.

...

Jabs is a center with some talent at both ends of the ice. Probably not available for the reg season, but come playoff time, after a full year centering the top line in GR, he could be ready.

Hank-Pav-Homer

Mule-Flip-Leino

Cleary-Jabs-Bert

Willy-Helm-Eaves

Solid offense and defense on all 4 lines. Several other combinations would work as well, depending on how well guys are producing.

And to keep this on topic, adding May in as Downey's replacement would be a good move. Probably wouldn't see much time with the big club, but still.

For those not familiar with Mays talent, please see exhibit A and B. The man has been an enforcer in the league, much like Downey, at a 'small' Enforcer size. I am a May fan- the guy has kegs of beer as fists.

A- skip to 50 second mark

So you're saying that May is a better fighter currently than Souray and Neil?

GMR, is your Lilja stuff just Schtick? Seriously, I think it is... a big act. Lilja has never, nor will be an 'ENFORCER' in the NHL. He's a good sized defensemen, who will occasionally fight out of need.

The reason Lilja won't be an enforcer is that he doesn't have to. He's got other talent too.

edit: And if Lilja will fight when needed what else do you need? Why get someone who will fight also when not needed?

Souray lost his balance and Neil won? I love me some Lilly but Cmon man.

Souray lost his balance after Lilja punched him in the head (duh), and Neil was grabbing on for dear life.

No offense to May, but when Lilja comes back, he'll have to take a back seat to the PAIN TRAIN. That's providing May even makes the team.

Lilja will not fight again this year, period- if he plays. I guarantee he won't, it'd be suicide.

Lilja is an average fighter at best, he has beat some tough guys and lost to some people he should have beat. The point is May would smoke Lilja in a fair fight.

May has never been in a fair fight.

I've always hated the guy for jumping people early and constantly throwing punches at the end of fights. No wonder he was teammates with that cheater Rob Ray for so long.

I personally don't want him to be our enforcer, if that's what it comes down to. The guy's 38 for crying out loud.

For all the doubters of May's other abilities, keep in mind that for a time, Anaheim used him up on the Getzlaf-Perry line. He didn't necessarily scorch up the scoreboard or anything, but he certainly didn't look out of place when he was cycling the puck with them two.

If May makes your team, I think your team becomes better in other aspects than just what he contributes. Because May's a type of player who will free up considerable space around others and always stick up for the club.

May will fight the biggest guys in the league simply because he knows he's due for it, as evidenced by this fight with Boogaard in Anaheim's first meeting with Minnesota after May clocked their defensemen in the previous postseason.

p.s. the point wasn't to win that fight, but merely stay alive...otherwise, he felt he had to give it to him for what he'd done.

You're wasting your breath, if he ain't scoring mad goals he'll be labeled a "waste of roster space" around here.

It is, but it's also entertaining. Esteef took the bait on it and he should know better.

I cant stress enough how much different signing a 32 year old Downey was to signing a 38 year old May.

Still, take what you can, GIVE NOTHING BACK! (POTC ftw)

I know. But I can see it now. Brad May would be the missing link that so many people think the Wings need after they drop a few games. Instead of "Why don't they bring up Downey?"... it'll be "Why don't they bring up May?".
