Wings make final roster cuts

Most of the regulars seemed to coast through the pre-season, so it's tough to evaluate.

Leino-Flip-Willy were impressive, and could be a great third line. I think I even saw Willy backchecking once. Would have liked to see more out of Bert, Homer, and Eaves. Eaves didn't get many opportunities with the regulars, so I'll give him a bit of a pass. Heard he looked alright with Flip and Leino on Saturday, but I didn't get to watch the game.

All in all, I'd say I'd rather see Pav and Hank together, but I don't feel bad about the lineup.

The defense and goaltending hasn't exactly been inspiring confidence, except maybe Kronwall, but again it's just the pre-season. Ericcson hasn't really looked like he's going to be pressing for a top-4 spot, but I'm sure he can step things up.

Has Bert earned a spot in the top six?

No he's looked bad, and zetterberg has yet to play... that 2nd line concerns me that it wont contribute alot offensivly this year... No more 90+pts for zetterberg.

True, but I don't believe you can send an injured player to the minors.

Plus, Helm is traveling to Sweden with the team. Unless they have an exception like they do with Larsson, players assigned to the minors actually have to report to their minor league team.

dang lilja is really messed up if hes still on long term IR

He may never recover, though the last few interviews I've read with him say he's had multi-day no headache strings.

I believe you cannot send an injuryed player to the minors.

Correct.

Helm is on the STIR, so he can travel to Sweden with no cap hit.

Even if he has the long strings with no headaches, he'll still be down for rehab for a while.

roster looks promising. We are once again set for an excellent season. Hopefully, this time there will be nothing like "Crosby is going to repeat", "Ovechkin for the Cup", or "Chicago needs to capitalize on their opportunity"...

As expected, that roster looks awesome. And people were worried about the fate of the team for this season, should've listened to me when I said that we'd generate a more than capable roster. The Bertuzzi signing will come good, he's looked impressive in the pre-season when he's been healthy and I see that 2nd line as potentially very strong offensively and there's two terrific defensive players to take care of things at the other end. They haven't had a lot of ice-time together to gel and I expect them to be a little rusty to start with but in time they could click and if it does, look out.

The first line is great, Datsyuk and Franzen have already shown amazing chemistry during the pre-season and Holmstrom needs to be on the 1st or 2nd line to remain effective.

However it's the third line that leaves me the most excited. Leino and Filppula have shown tremendous signs throughout training camp and pre-season and there's no reason why they can't put up the points if they play on the same line throughout the course of the season. It's a luxury to have these guys on the third line and it's going to be very difficult for opposition teams to defend them. Throw in Williams who I was 100% behind the signing of, good to see people are jumping on board left, right and centre. We lost a lot of goals during the off-season so the signing made up for the loss of a fair amount of this. This line will be very, very tough to contain and could be in for big things.

The 4th is pretty decent, especially if Maltby and Draper can improve from last season (questionable). Abdelkader will likely start the season as the 4th line centre with Eaves sitting. A lot of people are questioning his worth but get real, it's only been 4-5 pre-season games and he's had different line-mates and different roles already, give him time people!! He's new to the organisation and needs more than a handful of meaningless pre-season games to get used to our system. I can't believe how harsh people have been. From memory, Cleary scored a massive 3 or 4 goals in his first season as a Wing. I know Eaves isn't being counted on to only score but to play physical but he's still getting familiar with the team and thr style of play. Time folks, that's what he needs.

Can't wait!!

Umm... pretty sure that's incorrect.

Short-term IR doesn't provide cap relief. Long-term allows for the price of contract during a LTIR.

I believe before the season is over that Leino will end up on the second line.

Datsyuk - Helm - Franzen

Leino - Zetterberg - Bertuzzi

Cleary - Filppula - Williams

Eaves - Draper - Abdelkader

That would be a pretty good mix right there.

Pretty bold prediction in helm on the top line. I take it you're very high on him?

God, you're one hell of a douchebag.

Does douchebag mean the same thing in Finnish as it does in English? If so I'm pretty sure that violates Forum rules. The guy can have an opinion.

So what happened to Brad May? Did he go down to GR?

esteef

He's still just free agent status not signed. Holland said he will consider signing him after the game in Sweden after he reviews cap space and assesses his market.

Which basically means, I would not be surprised to see May get signed by another team. He looked very good in his 1 game... Babcock wants him, Holland does not (that is clear).

Holland wins these. Good for May if his 1 game audition provided him with a signing to another team.

How do you know that Babcock wants him and Holland is against him?

He seemed to be a decent player in the games he played, why not sign him and let him patrol Grand Rapids with the occasional call up?
