Wings Penalty Killing.....EPIC FAIL

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Anyone notice that no one dresses enforcers against us anymore? That's because our PK is the other team's enforcer. :hehe:

Seriously, though, this was not as big a deal last year when we could score. However, now we don't have the scoring depth. This has become an epidemic on the team.

We can't clear pucks, we can't cover the point, we can't clear the crease, we can't block shots, and we can't make saves. We suck at every phase of penalty killing imaginable.

How should Babcock fix this thing?

PLEASE. As said earlier: the reason is not PK, not Ozzie, not enforcer, not turnovers. These things are all consequences of one specific thing: focusing and playing every 60 minutes of that 60 minute game.

Don't know about that.

Even during our playoff run last year, the PK still sucked. So it's not related to how well the team plays the rest of the game. Whether the team plays well or not, you can still count on one thing. The other team will score at least one PP goal against us and usually it's more.

True. The Wings look completely unprepared for the season. They look like 4th graders dickin' around in gym class with their sloppy passes off the back of eachothers legs, no one can clear the zone and its like they are all wearing those cones they put on dogs heads after they get surgery, cause no one can see two players sitting on either pipe waiting for a gimmee. Focus is an issue....

But also, the PK just regular, plain ol' sucks.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: go with 3 Wings players ONLY, even if it's just a one-man advantage. The Wings always play better when it's 3-on-5 instead of 4-on-5's.

No seriously though, I think the PK has looked slightly better so far this year. For some reason goals are still going in, but overall they have better pressure and are not as passive.

Its going to be a long season.

You play more games in the NHL if you play bad? This is amazing news to me, in sweden we have the opposite system, the better you play the more games you get to play until only the best team is left.

The team is playing lazy and uninterested hockey. Hopefully this loss will embarrass them to the point where they start playing Red Wing hockey. They have the skill, they just need to pull it together and play their game.

What we need to do is let the guys who can't play defense, Samuelson and Hudler, go at the end of the year and then sign a defensive minded foward like Patrick Eaves and also have Helm and Abs in the full time line up. Then our team defense will greatly improve. Oh wait...

It's not so much the team defense that's a huge issue, although it definitely does need improvement, don't get me wrong.

The penalty killing, however, as the OP suggested, is absolutely pathetic. I don't even know how this happened. I think we need set PK units so they can maybe get some chemistry and they can get in a groove. This is painful though.

As a side note, Sammy's defensive play was fine. He was actually initially brought in because he was a reliable player defensively who could eat up a few minutes on the third and fourth lines. The offense was an unexpected bonus.

Yes the penalty killing is the bigger problem but the team defense in general is pretty bad I agree with you there. I didn't really mean to rip on Sammy (or even Hudler for that matter) I was more making fun of our fellow LGWers that seemed to think a couple players were responsible for everything bad that happened last year. I should have added "lets trade osgood for an enforcer because hes lazy and he sucks" to make that more clear ;)

The scheme is so bad, drop back and wait for the point shot, when we cant clear the crease so they'll score on the rebound pretty much everytime, and we dont get a save most time anyway. Let them get shots from the perimeter, get sticks in lanes and actually clear the puck, like it isnt hard.

They had a crappy pk last year, in the playoffs, and still managed to make it to game 7 of The Final. Tonight, the PK didn't kill the team. The five-on-five was simply outworked and outhustled.

The importance of the failings of the penalty kill are in direct proportion to the failings of the offence. You aren't going to beat many teams by scoring one goal on the road in the first 49 minutes. We don't notice the crappy pk as much when we score four or five.

I'm tired so the above might not make sense. BUT IT'S REAL TO ME, DAMN IT!!!

Agreed. But what can they do to fix it? It's really odd but they just seem snake bitten.

PK units at +/- 60% - we should be 29th or 30 in NHL...

and people laugh when I said that Betts, Moen or Grier is a NEED...

Nothing was done in offseason to get PK units better. Another thing, it's nice when your star players are playing on PK - but maybe they should play more quality minutes 5 on 5 and on PP in order to get going that 1st line...

Lebda, Meech are very, very bad... if they don't call up Delmore they should really try to trade either one for Ian White wich we be better option on PP 2nd unit that Williams (who isn't playing bad)...

Blaming 6 goals on only Meech, Lebda and McCrimmon is a little over the top. They suck, yes, but it's not just their fault. It seems no one shows up offensively. We have Filp, Dats, Hank, Leino among others yet we still can't find a way to score.
