Per Mlive:

"Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson will be a game-time decision after missing the morning skate here at the Saddledome because he's “not feeling well,†general manager Ken Holland said.

If Ericsson can’t play, Derek Meech would get into the lineup against the Flames. "

uh, does that mean a Lebda-Meech bottom pairing??

I really hope Babcock will at least split those two up.

Lebda and Ericsson usually play as a pair, so I really wouldn't be surprised..

Ericsson is leaps and bounds better than both of them defensively and even his game still needs improving at that end of the puck... putting them together, leaves too much weakness on one pairing... if he does put them together, it will be sparingly at best, with essentially them only rolling 5 d-men and putting the 6th in when too fatigued

Whoa whoa whoa, don't start with this 'leaps and bounds' stuff. Ericsson is a rookie, and he plays like one.

Yes Meech is a definite downgrade, but he's not 'leaps and bounds' better than Lebda and Meech.

Stop looking at his Playoff play last year, and start looking at how he's played thus far this year.

even with how green Ericsson is, and yes - he makes rookie mistakes at times, he is STILL leaps and bounds better than both of them defensively - as Carman JUST said, that is more of a testament to how bad both Lebda and Meech are defensively, than it is saying that Ericsson is a first team all-star...

Yeah, he's definitely leaps and bounds better than those two. He's also among the team leaders in points and the team leader in defensive points.

The Wings were able to give probably their best defensive showing of the year with Ericsson not playing.

What that tells me is that it might be a good thing to switch up the defensive pairings when Ericsson comes back. No more Lebda/Ericsson, they turn it over too much in the zone. Maybe try:

Lidstrom/Rafalski

Kronwall/Ericsson

Stuart/Lebda

wait... blueadams will make a thread.

As to Ericcson being out with the flu... it's the fall, it's flu season. Flu shots (no idea on swine shot) often can make a person sick, and I'm sure the team is taking at minimum the regular flu shots. Downside is all the things other than flu that could cause "flu like symptoms".

I agree that Babcock should split up the Ericsson-Lebda pairing. But last night Stuart, Rafalski, and Kronwall all played about 2 more minutes than usual, so our top four was out there more than most games.
