StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I say yes to both just not sure if the number will go up there or not. It should, he was a huge reason why they won those Cups, he was the last big piece of the puzzle for that 97 team. Time will tell on that one.

EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I definitely think first ballot HOF-er, but I don't know about retiring the number. I voted no, just because of my uncertainty. I wouldn't mind it if 14 was retired, but I can understand why they wouldn't.
hooon 1,089 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 No way they retire 14, and i don't think they should. The jerseys in the rafters for the Wings are ONLY the most elite players, and we can expect to see number 5 up there one day. As someone pointed out in another thread a while back, there are a tonnn of great wings players who added tons to the team, but if you start retiring the number for guys like shanny, you would have to do the same for holmstrom, maltby, draper, murphy, etc. I like that it is a very exclusive group up there. Carman 387 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 First-Ballot HoF? Definitely. One of the best power forwards ever. Number retired? It's iffy for me. I would have no problem seeing it retired, but there is hesitation on my part to say he should be up there. And to me if there is any hesitation of whether a number should be retired, it probably shouldn't be.
ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 If a number isn't a no-brainer for retirement - and I don't think Shanny's is - then it shouldn't be in the rafters at the Joe.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Not a chance he gets his number retired. He was a great staple in the Detroit franchise, but his number does not have the same legacy as the numbers currently up there now, nor Lidstrom's. He will get in the HHOF for sure. Shady Ultima 40 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 As I stated in the other thread, his number should be retired (as should Federov's) Simply put, while Draper, Holmer and stuff were a part of the 97 cup run, I've always seen Yzerman, Shanny and Federov as the Red Wings of an Era, much like a modern version of the Production line. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 I voted no for both. I think the jersey retirement question should be clear enough, so I won't bother getting into details that have been gotten into several times in the past. Regarding first ballot HOFer, I guess my answer is really "it depends" and it depends on who he's up against that year he's eligible (which is probably already pretty much known, but haven't bothered to dig that info up). So with that in mind, he may be a slam dunk due to lack of competition. However, if you look at, his goal total is impressive, but I think it's more to due to with him being able to play consistently for a long time (which is a feat of its own). If you break it down, he's only scored 50 goals 2 times in his career, has never been in the top 5 (well, he tied for 5th one year with 52 goals) and I believe he was 6th in another year, but other than that, I'm not even sure if he's ever been top 10 in goals scored in any other year. In terms of overall scoring, he's obviously never lead the league in scoring, only scored 100pts once, has only been in top 10 scoring 2 times (8th and 10th place). He's also not even a career point per game player. Has never really won any individual awards other than King Clancy. This may look like I'm bashing Shanahan, but I'm certainly not, I think he was a great player and definately a hall of famer, but when I think of first ballot hall of famer, especially when we are a few years away from eligibility, I'm thinking about guys (in the modern era) like Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Messier, Bourque, etc., not Shanahan. toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Maybe my standards are too high.....I fully expect that when it comes to his year, he will be a clear choice (i.e. first ballot) based on everyone else out there, but since we aren't there yet, I reserve that type of conclusion to the greater players. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Yes to the first question, hell no to the second. Part of me thinks you should play your whole career with the Wings to get your number retired, and barring that, you must become the embodiment of the franchise while you're there. He fits neither criteria.
Tane 17 Report post Posted November 17, 2009 Dont' think he's First Ballot. He might be, it'll depend on the class of candidates. I think he'll make his way into the hall, but If it was a list of candidates like this year, he wouldn't have cracked the top 4. Sundin Will be in that class, I put him in Over Shanny. Forsberg might be up as well. I'd put him in over Shanny. It'll depend on the class.
JasonNewEra 84 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 He'll definately be a first ballot. The jersey won't be retired, and that's only cause he wasn't our captain or a significant piece outside of the 97 & 98 cups. Sure he was great! However the Redwings reserve the rafters for gods of Hockey.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted January 16, 2010 No for both. The retirement, I don't even need to explain. As for first ballot? Sundin will be there. Perhaps Forsberg. Tom Barrasso may still be kicking around, Ed Belfour if he isn't inducted within the next couple seasons, Curtis Joseph will be eligible, Randy Carlyle and Mark Howe are still eligible for selection as well. Pavel Bure is another who might not be in by then. Belfour will likely be in before Shanahan is eligible. Belfour's induction might see Barrasso finally inducted as well, given their similar career histories and numbers. Joseph and Sundin are eligible the same year as Shanahan, as well as Forsberg if he hangs it up after this season. If they don't count Elitserien or KHL when thinking about the HHOF, then we have another three guys Shanahan will never be in ahead of: Jaromir Jagr, Sergei Fedorov, and Chris Chelios. But I believe they do count all professional leagues, so Shanny lucks out. But although he will get in, he will almost certainly not be on the first ballot unless the voters have a very short memory in his year.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 25, 2010 He'll be in the Hall, but won't get #14 retired here. The great Derek Meech now holds claim to that number.
