This isn't a 'winning record' stage for the Wings right now. This is a survival/try to keep at .500 period. Yea, it sucks to look like the TML at the moment but consider exactly what we're missing with our injuries:

1st line goalscorer

2nd line playmaking/pking center

2nd/3rd line offensive/pp point forward

Top pairing (#1 on some teams) d-man/PP QB

#5/6 PK d-man

We're not just missing roster players, we're missing what amounts to 1/2 of our highest end/minutes players and our #2 PK d-man. Arguably the worst run of injuries in the NHL right now. Compare our L10 to a coupla other good teams that are hurting on injuries now (or were recently):

Wings: 4-5-1

Avs: 3-5-2

Pens: 5-5-0

All 3 .500 or worse

And here's the L10 of our last 4 opponents:

Dallas: 5-4-1

Calgary: 6-2-2

Atlanta: 6-2-2

Nashville: 8-2-0(!)

All above .500, a couple on hot streaks, all with excellent goaltending performances the night they played us. Toss in with that a recent streak of disallowed goals against the Wings.

Recap:

*Arguably worst injury-hampered team at the moment

*Recent opponents playing well

*Some bad bounces

*Momentum killing disallowed goals

*7-1 before Dallas

It's not time to hop off the bandwagon yet.

yeah, i feel like we're in the middle of an unlucky streak. opposing goal tenders are getting hot, we're not getting bounces, injury craziness ... these last few games have been brutal but it's just a few games. we'll bounce back.

This is the kind of post I wanted to post, it sucks the Wings aren't doing well their last few games, but, with 3 of those 5 players coming back in the next couple months, and hopefully all 5 (Lilja you need to get better damnit) in game condition in the playoffs, we could be the Cinderella team this year.

The games we've been losing have just been brutally frustrating because it's like watching a bunch of grown men struggle valiantly to walk through a brick wall. Once those pucks start going in with a higher frequency, I think you're going to see the spirits rise considerably. It isn't losing that's frustrating, it's losing those games we should be winning.... so yeah, I agree with the post completely, and I really think this is a solid team... but then again, lessening the expectations, thereby lessening the pressure to perform, has never hurt this club in the past...

So, the optimism in me (what little of it there is) is telling me that this will be one of the first times in a long time the Wings will be in the playoffs, not as a heavy favorite, and many past Wings teams have found it hard to play with the tag of top contender, so maybe the inverse is possible. I welcome the rest of the NHL underestimating the Wings.

Injuries can't always be an excuse, but it can be a reason for a team struggling. The way I see it, the Wings are missing 4/5 of their 2nd PP unit. Kronwall and Williams were the point men, with Franzen and Fil up front with another guy (be it Cleary/Bert/Leino). That's fairly significant, and for a team already trying to essentially replace an entire 2nd line that left via FA (I know Hossa/Hudler/Sammy weren't a line, but it's close to being talent-wise a solid 2nd line on most teams)... it's tough to overcome all of that.

Minus Kronwall, this is the same team that was putting up 9 against the Blue Jackets and 7 against the Ducks. They can score, but they need some confidence and some luck.
