Tr!PoD#19 524 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 He's been a dirty piece of s*** since he joined the league, this isn't surprising. Someone is going to hurt him badly one of these days.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 He can't keep doing that. This is the kind of stuff that catches up with you down the road, and I'm not talking suspensions.
b-random 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 I know his physical play is a huge part of Ovechkin's game but this dude needs to chill and just play smarter. I'm not just referring to his dirty hits, I'm talking about not being wreckless and risking injury on himself, but I guess that's just his style. His career might not last too long if he keeps this up. He didn't even need to make that hit, it looked like he was trying to take Gleason's head off. haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 It's getting harder and harder for me to like Ovechkin. This is just another in a growing string of questionable plays he's made.
Vladiator 116 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 I believe the knee on knee hits are pretty much automatic suspensions. I really don't see much of a difference between Laraque's hit and OV's. But then again, it seems that the Penguins and OV are exempt from suspensions. Yeah both of these hits may have been just a basic reaction, but any player should know that you just can't do that. seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Still looking for video ... It was similar to Kronwall's injury, Gleason skated past him, he stuck the knee out and clipped him. Only difference was Ovechkin got the worst of it ... he couldn't put any weight on his leg going down the tunnel. It was actually not even a little bit like that. Except for the part where their knees hit. It was definitely dirty, and probably worth a game or 2, but Ovechkin didn't stick his leg out to hit a guy that was getting by him, he just led with his right knee out in front. Like I said, it's still dirty, but I don't think it's as bad as Laraque's knee.
j.hoop 64 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 i love you and your run and gun style ovie, but for this i cannot defend you. dirty play, and getting tossed out twice in a week =
The Mule 0 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 He deserves to be suspended this time.
Yzerman191 37 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Bummer. I've always liked Ovechkin, but the list is really starting to pile up. He's getting harder and harder to like with all of these dirty moves. I can't imagine the s*** storm around here if he did something like this to one of the Red Wings (IE Kronwall).
SweWings 45 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Moronic play but not entirely out of character either. If you play the style he plays, sometimes you're going to step across the line, and punishment in that case is deserved.
Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 I've watched it a couple times, and I think that while it definitely is suspendable, he didn't mean to do it. He looks like he was expecting to hit with his upper body by the way he threw his arms out at impact. But only the lower bodies collided and they both got hurt because of it. Guest Four Report post Posted December 1, 2009 I just watched it again and Gleason tried to turn out of the way, which I didn't even note the first time. I believe they're both at fault as it's like a player turning his back to a hit, it's the same principle here. If Gleason did not turn with his leg out, Ovechkin would have did a Kronwall. Guest Shoreline Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Would give Ovy the benefit of the doubt normally but it was clear he stuck his leg out there. Not very arguable. Very much an earned 5 minute major and I wouldn't argue against a suspension. He knows better, and now he has an injury of his own as one way of finding out the hard way what happens when you stick your leg out like that. Don't feel terribly bad for him right now. Kinda looked like Ovie was more at fault on this one. He's been increasingly erratic in his play this season and it's catching up to him now.
Mors 201 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Looked intentional to me, and hard to argue considering he has a "history" of doing this now...any other player (except maybe Cindy or Malkin) would be suspended for this. I'll go ahead and say I'm skeptical of the injury too just to piss off the fan bois.

I really do like Ovechkin as a player, but if you switch the name on the back of the jersey for practically anyone else, it'd be hard not to call them a dirty player with all these borderlines hits in a relatively short amount of time. Green Wing 26 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Ovechkin needs to get a suspension - for his own sake as much as anyone. He needs to be made think about his reckless style and reign it in a bit. I never had him pegged as dirty, but seeing the compilation of dodgy hits certainly makes you think twice.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Ovechkin is practicing today, so I don't think he hurt his knee too badly.

Guest micah Report post Posted December 1, 2009 My gut tells me that he dove on the play as well. He knew he did something stupid, so he layed on the ice, possibly a "how could I have intended the knee on knee hit, it hurt me too!" move. I hope that isn't the case, but I suspect it is. I don't respect cheapshot artists. I respect divers even less.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 No one can deny his talent, but these types of hits are happening way too often. It's getting nearly impossible to respect his talent when you see these types of plays as regularly as we have. The guy really shows zero respect for his fellow athlete and he deserves a suspension not just for this play but for the multitude of others over the course of his brief NHL career. This isn't out of the realm of possibility considering the dive he took in last year's playoffs while grabbing his face/head even though no one touched him. Embellishing contact happens all the time with most players, but stuff like that.....no contact.....really gets to me.
