Statts 4 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Brodeur recorded his 103rd career shutout to tie him with Sawchuk for most career shutouts. Congrats to Marty. Hell of an accomplishment.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Brodeur should have to get the next shutout without a mask on. Still an incredible accomplishment.
Cern 0 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) Incredible both that Brodeur has matched the record and that Sawchuck's lasted so long, particularly with all those years of butterfly goaltending being the norm. Edited December 8, 2009 by Cern

Gordie Howe hat trick 110 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Congrats to Marty, but I find it to be bittersweet...I kind of hoped Sawchuk's record would stand forever. Still a great accomplishment regardless.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Sawchuck didn't have the benefit of 82 game seasons, though. Sawchuck's record still blows my mind more. But congrats to Marty.
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) Shame Hasek didn't get to the NHL earlier to play on a trap system his whole career. He could've and would've blown both of them out of the water. Good accomplishment for sure. Still overrated though. Sawchuck's is more impressive. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 I could get a shutout playing behind that Devils system, but still impressive as hell.
RedArmy 4 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 I could get a shutout playing behind that Devils system, but still impressive as hell. well in all fairness that might have been true earlier in his carrier, but over the years Devils lost a lot of really good players and even now they aren't the greatest team on paper. Brodeur has been consistent and continues to carry them, so I think when he is done with his career he might be the greatest goal tender to play in NHL. But congrats to Marty. 70-game seasons aren't a huge step down. Plus, no back-ups for a good portion of those years, so he played in every game that he was physically able to. They should be arriving shortly. Prepare yourself for the following bombardment which will include but not be limited to the following: "Brodeur is the most overrated goalie of all time" "Brodeur is not only nowhere near the best goalie of all time, he isn't even in the top 5, perhaps not even in the top 8" where's egroen? He'll tell you all about it.

Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Brodeur is NOT close to being the best ever. Roy, Hasek and Plante are all clearly better than Brodeur. Ding! Right on schedule. First off, I didn't say Brodeur was the best ever. Somebody else actually suggested it. And they only did so as a "maybe". I actually don't care wear he ranks. I certainly think his accomplishment merit consideration amongst the elite. That's where I leave it b/c IMHO there's no way to definitively say who the best is. Or who is #2 or #4 or #12. It's an exercise in wheel spinning that I don't care to get involved in anymore. That said, go tell somebody else who gives a s*** about arbitrary rankings your opinion. For the record, the only thing clear about your opinion is just that. That its an opinion. I think it's a reasonable one. But who am I to say if you're right or wrong. CenterIce 83 Report post Posted December 9, 2009 (edited) Sawchuck didn't have the benefit of 82 game seasons, though. Sawchuck's record still blows my mind more. But congrats to Marty. This is not exact, since I don't know exactly when Sawchuk got his last shutout. It was in his last year, where he only played eight games, so it is close. Sawchuk took approximately 971 games for 103 shutouts, while Broduer took 1025. Sawchuk had an average of 9.43 games/shutout, where Broduer's is 9.95. Pretty close. You could say Sawchuk had tougher competition, but you could also say the longer seasons could have worn on Broduer more, with less time to re-cooperate. I say it is a wash. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted December 9, 2009 Nothing against Brodeur, but I find it more amazing how Sawchuk performed at such a high level for so long with such little protection. To be fair, Sawchuk and others lacking a mask was also in an era with far fewer shots towards the upper half of the net. Just something to consider. There are a lot of factors one must consider when crossing eras.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted December 9, 2009 ^Looks like the Brodeur police are on patrol. No one is allowed to say anything bad about him now. Wrong. Intelligent posters like egroen can say anything they want about Brodeur. People like you cannot as you fail to reach the minimum I.Q. requirements to post. Move along little fella, nothing to see here. These aren't the droids you're looking for.
