mmamolo 287 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 So I was just checking out some stas from various KHL teams and I came across Danny Markov. I've never been able to understand why this guy couldnt stick with an NHL team. I loved when we had him for a year and was pissed when he left. I live in Toronto and got to watch him a bunch with the Leafs years ago and I've never been able to understand why no team would hold onto this guy. Does anyone know? Was he trouble in the lockerroom? Did he always want more money than he was worth? What was it? He floated between Toronto, Phoenix, Carolina, Philadelphia, Nashville and Detroit all in an 8 or 9 year period. He's since been playing for Moscow Dynamo. The guy is only 33 years old. I just dont get it.hockeydb.com - danny markov
Carman 387 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 He is way too powerful to play in the NHL. It's just not fair for a team to play Markov, he would increase the injury rate over 10 fold.

Herr Hockey 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Danny Markov was 100% pissed off 100% of the time, and I loved it. We could use a little anger on the ice right now I think, too bad he's not around anymore.
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 I had heard he wanted too much cash as well. I briefly tried to verify this w/Google but... The other thing that never seems to be brought up when it comes to Russian players is that when they go to play in Russia, they're going HOME. As opposed to here, that is far away from HOME and not everyone here necessarily thinks Russians are all that great, and they know that. How many of us North Americans would rather play in Russia for comparable/less money? Not me.
egroen 384 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) I can't remember how much, but he was definitely asking for too much money (like $4m per season, at a time when the cap was much lower). Apparently every GM in the league realized what he did not: You look a LOT better than you are, playing with Nicklas Lidstrom. Though yes, he is exactly the type of defenseman I would love to see on the team right now. Edited December 10, 2009 by egroen
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Random link I found this link claiming Holland extended a $2.5M offer but wouldnt go any higher.
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Didn't he smoke in the locker room during intermissions? Stick his head in a dryer or something? Or was that someone else?

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 I liked him when he was here and was bummed when he left, but afterwards (I don't remember hearing much about him during the season) I learned he's apparently close to Belfour-crazy.

Guest Crymson Report post Posted December 10, 2009 (edited) Absence makes the heart grow fonder. As far as crushing hits go, in that entire season Markov had only that one big hit on Stoll. He was not otherwise notably physical on the ice that season; he rarely fought; he had zero offensive capability to speak of; and he was not exceptional amongst defensemen in any way. He was a solid defensive defenseman the majority of the time of the time, yes, but the idea that he was a wrecking-machine on the ice is incorrect. He wasn't even close to how Stuart or Kronwall currently are in terms of hitting. Why did Markov head for Russia? Because he's a defenseman worth maybe $2.5m or $3m, tops---for the reasons listed above---and he demanded $4m. There's nothing about him that merits that much money, and so nobody would pay him that. We got Rafalski instead. However badly he may be playing now, he certainly did fit with the team extremely well for the first two seasons he was here. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Actually, I remember that the reason he wasn't resigned (according to Holland) was because he wanted a 2 year deal - we had a lot of cap space the first year and anticipated none the second year IIRC. Remember all the bitching and moaning all through that season that we had all that cap space that wasn't filled? Holland couldn't get anyone to sign a 1 year deal who wasn't called Greg Johnson or Dallas Drake.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 As others have said, pretty much he wanted to get the KHL raise. I really wanted to keep him as well, he was pretty damn good in his year with the Wings. Stuart is an upgrade, but during the lean times of injury like this, I do tend to miss Markov more. Why do you think other teams didn't pick him up either? Because he wanted a two-year deal? I doubt it.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 But we could have afforded what he wanted for one year, just not for the second. Anyway, I do remember it.
Opie 308 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 I believe Markov wanted 4mil + a year for atleast 2 years. And seeing as he ended up in the KHL, I don't think anyone was giving him what he wanted. I think he was one of those Russians that really valued playing in his home country, he went there before it became the thing to do. They gave him an offer and I think he was either going to break the bank in the NHL or go to KHL. His stubbornness to take any kind of discount from anyone, shows his intents from the beginning. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 He was way too tough for a Euro. That's why he couldn't last in the NHL. When he dropped the gloves with Thornton in the playoffs, that was his death knell in Detroit.
Rice 42 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 I loved Markov. I think he had some off-ice issues though, which is why he bounced around the league so much. It wasn't just money. I've heard the rumors about smoking during games. Also heard he had cocaine problems and was in debt to people you don't want to be in debt with in Toronto. Who knows if that's true though. mjlegend 155 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 As I said only a week or so ago, I really miss his special brand of crazy. I'd still take him at a $2 milion, but there's no way he's worth more than that. IMO the Wings are patiently awaiting his return. I notice they haven't let anyone wear his coveted #95.
