FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 MLive Holland met with Lidstrom during this road trip and Lidstrom told him he won’t make a decision on whether he’ll continue playing or retire until after the season. Hudler called Holland a few days ago to wish him a happy New Year. He didn’t give any indication of whether he wants to return to Detroit next season, but he has an out clause in the two-year, $10 million deal he signed with Russia’s Moscow Dynamo in the summer. “He told me he’s not sure what he’s doing next year,’’ Holland said. If Hudler returns, he would honor the two-year deal he was awarded through arbitration last summer, which has a cap hit of $2.875 million. Holland said there is no timetable for Kronwall’s return. He was due back from his sprained left MCL by Christmas. “We sent him for second and third opinions. The doctors said it’s nothing significant, but he’s not getting better,’’ Holland said. “The feeling of the doctors is that maybe he pushed it too hard, so we held him back the last two weeks.’’ Holland said Ericsson (deep bone bruise in left knee) is about a week to 10 days away. He said Holmstrom (hairline fracture in foot) saw the team doctor on Friday and the prognosis remains the same (three-to-four weeks). Lots of stuff in this article. This probably means that it'll be a quiet deadline day for the wings. It should be interesting how all this shakes out. Huge changes could be happening. Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted January 10, 2010 Should be a big deadline day? I'm not so sure... we don't have a lot of young assets other teams would want imo. Besides Tatar and Kindl none of our prospects are that intruging imo (plus I bet we hold onto both) and besides taht the only two valuable comodities we have for big names are Filppula, Kronwall, and Ericcsson, all of which I have a hard time seeing being let go of (though Filppula and a few firsts and a nice prospct for kovy would be nice)

Ferraro and a few more of that class are also notable. Right now the Wings have a ton of great prospects in the cupboard.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 Hulder was way more effective than Leino... True, he would also cost us about 2 mil more towards the cap if we would have signed him instead. Weird how better, more proven players cost more, huh?
rage 24 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) I rather see Hudler and his 2.75 million cap hit stay in the KHL. I'd rather see the Wings spend that money somewhere else, not on a guy who turned his back on the team. Edited January 10, 2010 by rage

I'd rather see the Wings spend that money somewhere else, not on a guy who turned his back on the team. As much as I agree with you, I'd still like to see Hudler back. For his cap hit, he could very well put up great numbers. I'd really doubt we could get a value on the open market. That said we might be able to swing a great deal with him as a center piece, but he'd still need to come over for that to happen. So either way I hope he comes back, he could help the team either way. But he certainly isn't helping when he isn't playing in the league.

His whole reason for going to Russia was that he didn't want to play for another NHL team than the Wings. So I doubt he'll come back if we say "hey come here so we can trade you!". shoe 165 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 cant belive all the talk is about Hudler, Im more concerned about that Lidstrom news. play or RETIRE!!?? and how long is that decision going to take into the summer? Id hate for that meeting to have been all about trying to get a feel for what type of contract he was looking for so management could start working on a plan and then getting news back that he might consider retirement. Holland likes to get his contracts signed before the playoffs. Most of these old guys start talking about it about 2 years before it actually happens, lets hope thats the case. So I doubt he'll come back if we say "hey come here so we can trade you!". Clearly, he went to the KHL for the $... Though I'd take him back in a heartbeat, if he returns and the Wings turn around and trade him for economic reasons (cap hit), Hudler must understand because he has just done the same damn thing. But I think the Wings will definitely keep him if they can work him under the cap. That little bugger has some serious skill.
shoe 165 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 out of curiosity i checked out hudlers stats in the KHL 2009-10 Moscow Dynamo KHL gp - 40 g - 14 a - 23 points 37 pim 14 Almost a point per game that would be useful here. I wonder if he came back if a year over there will have helped his development or if he learns some bad habits over there?

It's Lidstrom not Sundin. Lids will probably decide when the Wings start golfing... with Stanley he'll probably call it a career, without Stanley he's going to want another season. Keeping in mind that elbow bothering him last year... he'll have to know how that feels too.

rage 24 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 That's a good point. Who can we get though? His production picked before he left. Not really sure. We will still have some cap room next summer and I suppose it all depends on what Lidstrom decides to do. I think it will be ironic if he doesn't honor his commitment to the KHL kinda like how he didn't honor his commitment to the Red Wings. I just hate when players cause all kinds of drama. As much as I agree with you, I'd still like to see Hudler back. For his cap hit, he could very well put up great numbers. I'd really doubt we could get a value on the open market. For that number, he'll probably be more useful than say Dan Cleary. I mean I won't hate the Red Wings for bringing him back if they do, I just think he should stick it out in the KHL. He turned his back on the team to go there, so please stay there until your 2 year contract is up.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 He'll probably retire. His play this season will humble him into realizing that he can't perform at a high level anymore.
Carman 387 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 The 2 year contract doesn't start until he comes back to the NHL. Which is good because while he is developing (Hopefully) when he comes back he'll be stuck at that salary while being in his prime.
Jaymz99 2 Report post Posted January 10, 2010 Hulder was way more effective than Leino... Nobody is effective right now so it is a moot point. This season has seen almost no regularity in the playing ability of anyone. It fluctuates game to game. I am tired of all the Leino bashing. He is a Wing right now so support him. If not, then hop on the Penguins bandwagon like the rest of the fair weather fans.
