FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 Also, Domi was listed at 5'11, but he had to be no more than 5'9. I think a three inch height difference is significant somewhat. I remember being in Toronto and meeting Domi in person once. I can tell you that there is no way in hell that he was 5'11'', much less even 5'9''. He must have been like 5'7'', maybe 5'8''. Dude had an incredible ability to take punches. I remember the Probert vs. Domi round 2 bout where Probert must have landed 40 good punches on Domi. Most guys wouldn't have lasted through that first flurry that Probie threw.
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted January 11, 2010 Tie Domi? What an overrated fighter. The best fighters, if we're talking pure fighting ability, are the guys we probably never hear about because their careers last a season in a snoozer hockey city and they disappear. Calgary in the 90s had some of the best fighters around and the vast majority, even to diehard Flames homers, wouldn't ring a bell. If we're talking best overall fighters, you've gotta mention Tony Twist. The guy beat the living s*** out of George Laraque for crying out loud. He was an animal. Best Wings fighter? I'd take Kocur by a hair over Probert.

He was probably about 5'10 on skates, which is how they measured him. Teams often list players as being bigger and lighter than what the really are. Looking at photos of him outside of the rink, he looks about 5'8 or so. Kocur was 6'0 from what I remember, and I've never thought of him as a smaller guy that was great pound for pound. I'd take Kocur by a hair over Probert. Twist was great, but he was jacked up on roids and had terrible balance as well as a suspect chin. He threw too many uncoordinated punches. No way he's the best overall fighter, and he isn't a top 10 guy for me. Tie Domi was a more well rounded figher than Twist and didn't really have any weaknesses outside his size, which wasn't really a weakness for him. He was not an overrated fighter by any stretch. If Twist was Domi's size, he would have been murdered in the NHL with the style that he fought. Calgary did have some great fighters, most notably Sandy McCarthy, who I'm sure most hockey fans have heard about. Same with Berube. I have Probert ahead of Kocur, but I can see how you'd put him ahead of Probie. Kocur had a stretch there in his prime where he was undefeated for several years. Shady Ultima 40 Report post Posted January 11, 2010 Yes. I've never been a fan of goons, and I liked everything Mac was. Maybe not the best fighter, but my favourite none the less. And he's from my hometown. Gotta love the hometown boys
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted January 11, 2010 Size doesn't mean as much as people think. Stick Domi in some backwater s***hole and name him John Smith and no one would care as much about him. His rep got bigger than his ability. He'd gotten his ass whomped more times than any top 5 fighter ever should've.

He'd gotten his ass whomped more times than any top 5 fighter ever should've. Twist didn't become an elite fighter until he came to St. Louis on steroids. He was a good enforcer in Quebec, but became elite in St. Louis. So yes, size did matter to him, because it made him better once he was roided up. And Domi constantly fought against guys that were 6'5 or 6'6. You're telling me it doesn't matter when a 5'8 or 5'9 guy takes on guys 9 inches taller than him? I'd say it definitely matters. No one else Domi's size ever took on guys that much bigger than them. So that tells you how special he was, that no one else did what he did. Oh, just for your information, I don't have Domi in my top 5. He's in the top 10, though. Probert got his ass whooped a lot also, but I'm not taking him out of my top 5 because of it. cmonster 11 Report post Posted January 12, 2010 When I think of fighting and the Red Wings only a handful of guys come to mind. 1. Probert 2. Kocur 3. McCarty 4. Grimson 5. Shanahan *These are all guys I have seen play (started watching hardcore in '94) **There are guys who fought who I thought were tough, hardnosed, not "fighters" And imo Gordie was one tough son-of-a-*****. I think some people underestimate the old timers and their abilities
Dominator2005 558 Report post Posted January 12, 2010 1. Probert 2. Kocur 3. Grimson 4. McCarty 5. Lapointe Sure you can include guys like Tiger Williams, Brad Norton, Wendel Clark etc... But you also have to take into consideration how long they played for the Wings, how often they fought while on the team etc, etc... It's like making an all time Wing player list and slapping Robitaille, Hull, Hasek, and Chelios at the top... Sure they had exceptional careers, but not necessarily with the Wings. uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted January 12, 2010 Great thread Im suprised so many people have mentioned Brad Norton. Guest micah Report post Posted January 12, 2010 Great thread Aww, thanks! That's kind of you to say. Im suprised so many people have mentioned Brad Norton. He never managed to not fall over during a fight during the short time he was with us. He only just about won one of his fights as well. I mentioned Norton only because he was Wing who was brought in at least partially for the purpose of fighting. He was an awful hockey player and a pretty poor fighter as well. The only guy I have him above is Jaime Puschor, that should indicate what I think of his abilities... I've really enjoyed having May around this season. He has brought an appreciated dynamic to the wings' game this year. I notice a change in the way our other guys conduct themselves when he's around, they get almost a bit of a swagger. Confidence? Fdreedom from fear? I dunno, but it's something. Downey brought it too. I never noticed it with Norton
