If Lidstrom were to retire...

Lidstrom may retire after this season. I'm betting he'll wait to see if the Wings win the cup this season. If they do, then he'll be out. Otherwise, I think he'll go for at least one more. But if he does retire, who do you think would take his "C" spot? I personally got my money on Zetterberg.

take this for what you will but my girlfriend's mom knows his wife and said that this year is his last year playing. i hope he changes his mind.

as for the topic, i would say zetterberg gets to be the captain.

I wouldn't be against it. The guy is a god in my eyes and desreves to go when he wants and how he wants. I'm really hoping his number is up next to Stevie's soon. I think it deserves to be there. All great things must come to an end.

As for the "C", I don't even know. Maybe they will give it Draper until he is done and then pick a permanent captain.

I don't think Draper will get it partly due to his age. Z will get it.

Ouch....if that turns out to be true. I think everyone here (myself included) truly believed he'd be back for atleast one more season. I wasn't about to hold on to any thoughts of him playing into his mid-40's, but I did think next season was more likely than not.

Anyway, I can understand him wanting to retire if they win the Cup this year. If they don't, I have a feeling he'll decide what he's gonna do based on how the team plays down the stretch of the regular season. A lot can be determined for what type of team they'll have next season based on how they play when they're healthy and with Lidstrom likely taking a decent paycut to ensure his final season has its best chance possible.

Losing Lidstrom is going to be a huge blow to this team no matter how much salary it 'frees up'. He's still worth every penny of 7.45m this season.

Like some have said in the past....losing Yzerman to retirement won't have nearly the same dramatic impact on the team as losing Lidstrom to it. Given their level of play *at the end of their respective careers,* I couldn't agree more.

If memory serves me correctly, Holland has already said Zetterberg will be Captain (back when they were naming Lidstrom Captain). Things may change by that point, who knows, but he has already said that.

What worries me more than the captaincy, is who is going to "replace" him. The Wings should try to get Thomas Kaberle, his value is at an all time low, and he's a great player on a TERRIBLE team. Burke says "he won't ask him to waive his NTC" but he never said he's not interested in trading him.

I've said it for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Lids retire after this season.

I just hope we make the playoffs so that his streak isn't broken, and also I hope he can get either (or both) an Olympic Gold or a Cup if this is indeed his last season.

And if Zetterberg doesn't get the C when Lids calls it quits I will be very surprised.

Kaberle isn't strong enough defensively to replace Lidstrom. He would be a good replacement for Rafalski however.

Also I don't know if Kaberle's value is that low, he has 41 points in 50 games.

The year Lidstrom retires is the year the Wings finally need an exceptional goaltender during the regular season. Let's hope Howard continues to be that guy.

I think Bertuzzi should get it personally... Zetterberg is too inconsistent, and Datsyuk is just a younger Kovalev.

and the award for the most asinine post of the day goes to..

you just like messing with people, don't you?

To be completely frank, what your girlfriend's mom may get from Lidstrom's wife and passes on to your girlfriend who passes it on to you probably isn't very reliable at all.

As a couple people have said, Lidstrom retiring is some of the worst possible news that this organization can get; yes, we can get some good players with that cap space, but I don't think most people realize how good Lidstrom truly is.

I wish he would play until he'd older than Chelios is now, but I sincerely doubt that will happen. At this point, I'm just hoping for another year or two out of him.

I want Z to get it, but the captain should play damn near every game of the season, which is why I think Datsyuk will get it, even though I think Z possess better leadership abilities.

If it were not to go to Zetterberg, it would likely go to Kronwall... Datsyuk doesn't have a strong enough command of the language...

No one can replace him. That is why he is an elite player. It will have to be more defense by committee for defensemen and forwards.

You don't need to talk to be a good leader, such as Yzerman. Only reason we haven't seen any or that many Russian captains is because they've only been in the league a couple decades and look at some of the best Russian players and see who was on their team and why they never got the C.

Everyone loves Datsyuk, as they do with Zetterberg, but it's not like Datsyuk is terrible at English, Holmstrom is terrible at English. I honestly hold to my guns that you want a captain that will play 80+ games a year. neither Kronwall or Zetterberg have shown they can do that. I know Z dominates in the playoffs as well, one of the best two year stanley cup runs I've ever seen. But you need a captain that will be healthy more often than not and also leads by example on the ice, in my opinion.

If Z could stay healthier longer, I'd give him the C no questions asked at all.
