Guess who has the most power play opportunities?

That's right. It's the Bettman Youth. The Pens total 213 power play opportunities this season. Detroit? 190 (about the middle of the pack).

In fact, the Pens have 7 more opportunities than the 2nd place Dallas Stars which represents the second biggest gap between any two rankings on the stat sheet (the biggest gap is 12 between Calgary and Boston near the bottom of the list).

Put on the tin foil hats. Conspiracy am confirmed.

Generally speaking, puck possession teams tend to draw more penalties, which is why you would have saw Detroit higher in prior years, but not quite as high this year. You also need to consider the teams you play against most. The Pens play a lot against Philly, who tend to be pretty goonish and take a lot of penalties, so that helps that stat as well.

To be honest, I think the original post is a very limited picture and doesn't really show much of anything. So the Pens have the most PPs so far. So, what is that supposed to show? Have you actually attempted to see how many times they have been SH as well, just to see if there is any basis at all for showing some sort of bias.

Did you forget to see that Dallas has played 2 fewer games? Dallas actually has more PP opportunities on a per game basis. Oh and for the record, Dallas has had 48 more PP opportunities than they have been SH (206 vs. 158). The Pens have only had 21 more PPs than SH and Detroit, by way of comparison, has had 21 more PPs then SH.

Please enlighten me on what this interesting stat is supposed to show.

Highly skilled teams always get more PP opportunities. Look at the Wings the past few seasons.

Then the Caps should be leading the pack by a mile. Caps skill > pens skill by a mile. Pens simply have the bottom line grit that shows through, but overall skill isn't their strongest point (even Crosby's game is largely based on grit and smarts, not as much raw talent like Malkin or Ovie).

Game 3 against Was last play-offs. Pens were down 0-2 in the series. Penalties? 8-2... which way do you think?

PS That game still went to the overtime and Was lost. That clearly was the turning point artificially generated by the league.

the nhl obviously didn't favor the wings when they had the most opportunities

pittsburgh though, that's another story

To the people with the "highly skilled" teams argument: explain Washington's and Chicago's placement on that sheet.

They obviously aren't as skilled as Pittsburgh. Simple really. But then again I don't expect much in the form of intelligence or deductive reasoning skills from a tin foil hat wearing, Ovechkin slappy.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

If you wonder why I've stopped using stats so much, it's because I'm not very thrilled at how it's been used and manipulated, especially recently on this forum. Honestly. More Penguins conspiracy stuff? Matt, we need a facepalm emote. Would have saved me 30 seconds of typing and I could have just posted an emote and left it at that.

I hope you aren't being serious. Watch out for those UFOs while you are at it.

I hope you took the tin foil hat statement as a JOKE. Jesus. I just thought it was an interesting stat worthy of discussion. I mean, it's Pitt of all teams leading the stat. I knew that would spark some interesting debate.

I hate the Penguins and Bettman as much as any hockey loving fan, but that's not a huge discrepancy between power play time. Yeah, the cynic in me is not surprised the Pens are at the top, but they're not so far ahead of everyone else as to raise eyebrows. Most of that is obviosly just a few penalty filled games.

Heaven forbid we discuss NHL stats/facts on a NHL forum!

The conspiracy statement is a joke! I guess it's not funny because some people do wear tin foil hats and think Bettman is in bed with Crosby. I just think they give each other rim jobs...
