Which NHL Players Smoke?

Rate this topic

86 posts in this topic

I'm fairly certain that a pretty high percentage of hockey players dip. If you ever stick around after a game, you can see a bunch of players with Skoal (or whatever) rings in their pockets. At least that's what a couple of my friends have said.

And if it's anything like every team I've played on since I was 16, then there's definitely a bunch who dip.

And Lennart (Seppo talking here :P), what you call snus, we call dip. Camel is trying to market some stuff they call snus, and it is, but it's just snus in pouches. Not a fan of it. I'll stick to my long cut Skoal.

Phaneuf and Kipper

Kipper smokes between periods! He drinks like none other either. My buddy works for a glass company who had to go and replace Rhett Warrener's window casue Kipper got pissed up and kicked and busted out the window.

Edit: Didn't see the update on Kipper's smokers status from adubs before I posted. It's good he quit.

This topic reminds me what an old classmate told me years ago about the Milwaukee Admirals...

His father being a doctor was on the teams medical staff for a few years...Every once in a while my buddy had an opportunity to "hang out" in the players locker room after games; there the equipment guys/trainers (was in the late 70's/early 80's so they did a little of both) would have a few coolers filled with ice, and beer, and above each locker would be a tin/pouch/pack of that players preferred tobacco product.

Back in those days in the minors only a handful of guys really took exceptional care of themselves...A old co-worker of mine had season tickets to the Milwaukee Admirals during that same time; most of the players would head over to the bars across the street from the Mecca Arena to drink/hang out with the fans.

Thanks for the pics, babe.

Intersting, but in the US, "Swedish" snus comes in little pouches. That's probably why I keep mine in the lower lip.

There are both kinds in Sweden as well.

It's funny, because I don't know anyone who does it up top either. And I know quite a few people that dip.

Why not talk about steroids also? I'm pretty sure many NHLers use them. People just don't talk about it in the media.

Here's an interesting Finnish article.

Take Forsberg for example. He weight 86kg from 1994 to 2001. Then after that he got 7kg more weight in one year. How's that possible? We're talking about muscle here. This isn't fat. His weight had been stable for 7 years and then it just raised 7kg in ONE YEAR. And then it was stable at 93kg. These are professional atheletes, so as I said, it's muscle not fat.

How is it possible to gain 7kg more muscle weight in one year when you're not a teenager anymore? You have to play 82 games a season. When do you have time to train like that? It has been said, that adults can only get maximum of 3kg muscle weight in one year, with normal training.

And I didn't pick Forsberg for example because he's a Swede. It's just funny how stable he's weight has been. Then after 00-01 season the coach said that he gets thrown around too much. And he had to take those pills. Also, Teemu Selanne weight only 70kg when he came into the league in 1992. After the first season he weight 82kg. Now he's about 95kg.

C'mon, how could you forget this part?

Käytännössä maajoukkueeseen kutsuttu

NHL-pelaaja altistuu dopingtesteille pari viikkoa

vuodessa. Loput 50 viikkoa hän urheilee

ilman minkäänlaista testausta.

I have a friend that worked at a bar in Royal Oak where a lot of the Wings went, and he said that Lebda smoked a ton there.

Interesting. And Lebda can fly on the ice like none other. Just by watching him, I wouldn't guess that he was a smoker.

I have absolutely nothing backing this up besides my own theories, but I wouldn't be suprised if Johan Franzen took roids. Think about it, that's all I'll say.

I doubt it, probably just testosterone, hgh takes years to see the difference, while with testosterone you gain fast and lean muscle.

I was watching Wingspan and they showed a close up of one of the players and his teeth were nasty yellow. Got me to thinking, which NHL Players do we know smoke?

I am not saying yellow teeth = smoker. Coffee, red wine, etc could cause it.

Pretty sure Danny Markov is a smoker. And Dion Phaneuf (spelling). Who else?

my aunt used to be security fo illitch and once she was asked by Jiri Fischer if she had an extra cigarette

I have seen Franzen up close many times without his shirt on at Lifetime Fitness and trust me he is just a big framed guy. His muscle mass is actually rather underwhelming to what you'd think it'd be.

I know what you mean. Pronger would be the kinda player too. Just look at his face.

Just a story. I have a few connection w/ the Predators, and just before Markov came to Detroit, they told me a funny story.

Morning before game, Predator team meeting in the hotel conference room. All present except Danny. 15 minutes into the meeting, he rolls into the conference room wearing just his boxers and the hotel bathrobe with a lit cigarette in his mouth. Coach stops talking and everyone just watches him. Markov crosses the room smoking the whole way without so much as the slightest acknowledgement of his team or the meeting around him. He gets to the breakfast table, grabs and takes a full pot of coffee, turns around and heads right back out the door.
