NOT doom and gloom

Here's the deal. I promise I'm not a knee-jerk reaction kind of guy, I have confidence, especially with injured players coming back (most notably Franzen), and I feel very confident the Wings will make the playoffs. But what do we honestly need to make a real run? I really like Ozzie as a person but I feel more and more he's past his prime (he reminds me of Cujo when we had him...). We have 143 GA, drop ten we'd be better in that category than spots 5-8. But this team also reminds me of last year's Wild.. we can handle ourselves defensively but we need goals, something Hossa could have provided if we kept him another year. 10 more would have us tied or better than spots 4, 7 and 8.

So what really is more important now, goal scoring or goalie?

if we need to get anything it would be goal scoring.

Jimmys played great no need to waste what cap space will do have on a goalie when we have one thats playing well. i know hes not experienced but the only way to get experience is to let him play and hes earned the right to play

if you make any changes id say get someone to score goals, or just leave the roster as is and hope the healthy players can help make a march run to the playoffs

I wish we could insert a 35-40 goal guy into the lineup who is also a proven playoff performer. Preferably someone with a big body and ability to take the puck to the net. A bonus would be if he had a cool nickname and did funny things like steal Kane's mouthguard.

If only there was a player like that available!

Duh! We already have Franzen! He led the playoffs in 07-08 in goals for us, and he's big and works hard, which is why Yzerman nicknamed him the Mule! And he was the one who stole Kane's mouthguard! Don't you remember?

/pretending to not understand the joke.

I really think this year, if we make the playoffs, we just see how far we can go. I don't think you will see Ken Holland make any moves this trade deadline. If they make a move, it will be minor. I think that this year is a transition year, and it was Ken Holland's plan to wait unitl this offseason, retool, and go hard next year.

Well, if you believe the twisted NHL 10 world of some LGW this is in the works

Lebda, Leino, 3rd Rd--> ATL

Kovy, 1st Rd --> DET

LoL. If only...

I'm repeating myself from the Rumor Mill discussion on "who do you want gone, who do you want..." but

Leino, Williams*, Lebda, + Meech for a scoring winger.

*No hatred for the guy. I'm trying to look at the guy for what he's doing now, not what he did his last time around with the team --

He's played only 15 games and has as many points as Leino.

maybe coming back from injury he'll start to light it up, but maybe he's worth more in a package for another piece of the puzzle.

Who that is??? I dunno?? Who's a seller that's got a playoff rental for us? Maybe it doesn't get any better than JWill?

I can't see a single team willing to take that and offload a scoring winger, sorry. Throw in a second and/or third, and we might be able to get a scoring winger.

Would you trade away a first or second line scoring winger for two 6/7th D-men, a fourth line schlub and an injury prone third line player...w/o a pick involved?

Cujo was another guy who the fans ripped on tremendously but in the playoffs, the guy was the only reason the team had a prayer. He was clearly the best player on the ice for the Wings.

I think Osgood will be fine when it matters. It would be really silly to doubt him at this point after last year, I don't care how you spin it.

As far as goal scoring, it's definitely our biggest issue. While Franzen will help, I think we could've easily afforded to deal Flip to throw an extra million (matching what he signed for in Chicago) at Hossa to keep him here and use the other $2 million to sign Bert and Eaves. I like that team a whole hell of a lot better than this team now. We've got too many two-way forwards with strengths that are heavily weighted towards defense.

I would be fine with a lateral trade at the deadline that traded some defensive depth among our forwards for offensive depth. Nothing major, no Kovalchuck BS, but just someone who thinks offense first as opposed to defense first.

As far as defense, getting Lilja back will bring a lot of balance to our defense. Lilja's a guy who doesn't have to be great to be a really effective part of this team. He figured out his role and worked hard to exceed every expectation required of it. And let's hope some of Lilja's "stay at home" sense will wear off on Ericsson.

But when you look at what the pairings will be, you'll have a guy on every pairing that is typically real sound in our end and a guy who's more offensively oriented.

Lidstrom Rafalski

Stuart Kronwall

Lilja Ericsson

If they switch in Lebda or Meech for Ericsson, you lose the big shot but you might get slightly, well, ever so slightly less stupid plays in our end...

I think you may have missed the point...

*cough #93 *cough

I was commenting on how some on here believe the only way to win is unrealistic trades for outside talent

You may be right, but there are going to be teams that are looking to rebuild for next year.

All those guys with the exception of Leino are FA at the end of the season.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility that a team desperate to shed some salary wouldn't bite.

If the player was right, maybe I would throw in a pick as well. It's not as if I imagine any of those guys being Wings next year anyway.

I'm aiming for a second/third line winger with those pieces, not Kovalchuk.

Umm, OK. So, let's go over the list of what the other team will be getting in exchange for this scoring winger:

  • A player who is in his first season and has slumped so badly he's been scratched multiple times.
  • A player who has spent much of the season injured.... and whose contract is up at the end of the season.
  • A defenseman who is below-average in talent and physicality.

Now, yes, I could really see a GM go for that---if he had a grudge against his own team. Honestly---believe it or not, other teams will not jump at the chance to improve our roster by accepting our garbage for a quality return.
