Whatever happened to Markov?

I thought he was always pretty cool. A little intimidating and not the best defenseman, but I liked him. I remember a game where there was a big scuffle along the boards and he dropped the gloves and literally dove headfirst into the pile of players.

Haha reading some of the comments in that link really demonstrate what Markov was all about:

"This is the same guy who once attacked a mascot, shot a puck at a referee, and trash-talked the Senators bench after getting hit in the face with a slapshot."

"Markov = Epic Win! I can't remember any other Leafs D-men that always tried to block shots teeth-first."

"I remember one time when Dino Cicarelli was in his usual spot in front of the crease and Markov slewfooted him, pushed him in the face and then sat on him with his knee across Cicarelli's neck. He got a penalty, but got up arguing with the ref as if he did absolutely nothing wrong."

"I remember reading an article about him during a playoff series with the Flyers. The reporter asked him what he was thinking about when the likes of Lindros and LeClaire were barreling down on him. Markov, beautifully replied, "I'm thinking f*** you and f*** you too!"

Someone should base a character off this guy.

I lol'd.

He was like if you took the insanity of Peter Stormare playing that Cosmonaut in Armageddon, and put him in the body of Ivan Drago.

I saw this in the comments:

I also ran into him once on the street, outside of Rotate This! on Queen Street. He was smoking a cigarette and I went up to him and thanked him for doing such a great job in the playffs and mentioned that I had got 55 Markov on my jersey. He replied with

"Ha Ha Ha! Nobody like Markov on jersey! No girls like that!"

As if I didnt miss him enough already

He was ******* nuts, and it was great. Him flipping out in OT vs St Louis and beating up Petr Cajanek and flirting with a fan in Anaheim where another Ducks fan came in and pissed Markov off so he banged the glass will be my lasting memories of him :D

All you people who relentlessly rag on Rafalski as being the worst hockey player ever are retarded. Nothing else can be said.

Worst Ever? Not even close. Horrible now, but not worst ever.

It's interesting that you choose "retarded." Now, I'm not really that PC, but Lewis Black made a funny observation about that last night-- maybe it's the new "n" word. As in, it can only be used by people of that group.

As a Rafalski apologist, feel free to use it.

Exactly. Put Lebda with Lidstrom during the prime years and we'd be talking about how Lebda's 50 point seasons were awesome, but we wish he'd be better defensively.

Brian Rafalski=Brett Lebda. At least Lebda makes absolutely nothing. I'd keep Lebda over Rafalski, and I HATE Brett Lebda as a hockey player.

Seriously? What the f*** are you watching? Sure, Rafalski's cap hit is high, but look at every defenseman in the league's salary with his pedigree. Its what you pay for a defenseman of his caliber. The only thing him and Lebda have in common is size, and Rafi doesn't let it bring down his game. He's smart with the puck, has a great shot, and great outlet pass. Besides, if he complements Lids the way he does, that's half worth it right there. Rafalski is the second best defensman on the team. No cup in 08 and no finals last year without the guy.

Definitely agree. There are 10 defensman that are within his salary range (5.5M to 6.5M), 4 who get paid less than him but >/= 5.5M, and 5 that get paid more than him but </= 6.5M. He has the 5th most points in that group, and three of the four defensman with more points than him have a higher salary. He's also within three points of three of the four dman that do have more points than him. He has the second highest +/- to only Pronger, and nobody else is even close to where he is. He also takes the least amount of penalty minutes out of everyone in that group. It doesn't hurt to keep in mind that he's keeping up with his salary class on an underperforming Wings team. Given the hard stats, Rafalski could probably be valued a bit higher than he's getting paid now. Granted, as Eva will tell you, there's more to hockey than stats, but even watching him on the ice for the most part I don't see anything less than what Holland is paying him for.

Thats debatable as we will never know if that is true or not.

It's virtually certain, as Markov had no offensive upside whatsoever.
