Average, very very average. Pretty much what I expected from the Tigers this season, but somewhat disappointing because they have looked so much better at times. The Twins are going to win the Central again and I'm not sure the Tigers are even better than the White Sox when they cool off.

I just hope Dombrowski sees this team for what it truly is. I usually advocate for "win now" no matter what, but this team has too many flaws and the trade deadline isn't going to fix all of them. I don't want to see high-end prospects traded away for a piece that probably won't even result in the Tigers making the playoffs. We need a catcher, shortstop, another left-handed bat off the bench and an established starter to the rotation too. Fix it in the off-season with the loads of cap space opened up from the bad contracts and come back stronger for it. This was always a "transition while trying to contend" season for the Tigers anyways.

They'll be okay once they fix the inconsistentsies.

Possibly, but I think that's the overriding issue with this team: they are too inconsistent to seriously contend. 7-8-9 in the order is a disaster, the starting pitching is very erratic as Verlander is the only reliable starter, the defense is terrible and they can't win a damn game away from Comerica. If Verlander isn't pitching and Maggs-Cabrera-Boesch aren't providing all or most of the offense, the Tigers look very bad.

I wish it was inconsistency, however I feel it's more likely the Tigers are exactly what we are seeing right now: a borderline .500 team in a weak division.

buyers or sellers?

I think it's a mistake for them to be buyers even at only 2 games behind. Given the brutal schedule over the next 4 weeks and the fact that they needed a hitter before Maggs went down; now they'd need 2 batters and would have to overpay big time. Save the money and get some players during the off season.

Agreed completely. Losing Maggs just ended any prayer the Tigers had at winning the division. Cabrera may not see another strike this season. I don't want to give up young prospects when the Tigers have a TON of salary coming off the books this winter to address the glaring issues on the left side of the infield and at catcher. Adding Ted Lilly or Mike Lowell isn't going to get the Tigers into the playoffs at this point. Let's see what guys like Larish, Worth, Sizemore, Avila can do with some playing time and if they can become a part of the future.

Major League Baseball is a freeking joke. Not the game, but the business and it's executives and umpires. Blown call after blown call have cost the Tigers history and wins this year, and now after another blown call, Leyland comes out to argue, accidentally spits some of his sunflower seeds on the ump, gets tossed, and suspended. And what about all the umpires that blew the calls? NOTHING!

Jhonny Peralta? Yuck... Are we trying to go for the lowest team batting average in history? Every Indians fan and sports commentary show couldn't wait to get rid of the guy and all they have is Andy Marte at third base right now.

Just give Sizemore a chance. The season ended the second Maggs slid into home.

How soon can the Tigers get rid of Dumbrowski? OK so he got them out of the bottom into the middle. If they have any aspiration of actually winning the division some year - they need to get rid of this guy.

He can hide behind injuries this year again, but that's a shame if anyone buys it.

Although I rather like Leyland, I would say give the management a shake-up as well.

Sometimes you've gotta go the next step to be a winner - I don't see how Ilitch tolerates this, esp when he can see what top notch leadership does for the Wings....

Besides 2006, the Tigers have underachieved or been flat-out awful under Dombrowski. While I believe he does have many desirable qualities as GM, they often get overshadowed by poor decisions. The lingering in mediocrity right now is sqaurely on Dombrowki's moronic gesture to hand out awful contracts and extensions to average or in some cases worthless players. I love Maggs, but that's one of the worst contracts ever. Inge, Bonderman, Robertson, and Willis' contracts are killing this franchise ability to seriously contend right now. I realize overpayment is sometimes necessary to attract free agents to Detroit in baseball, but let's make sure they are actually worth a damn before giving them contracts to stay forever with the Tigers. I'd love Jair Jurrjens back more than any other bonehead move Dombrowski has made too.

The Tigers are competitive every season lately, which for me is really a first in my life. But if Mr. Ilitch is going to hand Dombrowski a blank check then I expect a little more now than one playoff appearance in five years. I almost wish Ilitch would cut back so the Tigers hand would be forced to build a team the proper way through building up a strong farm system. The Tigers have literally nothing for position players as quality prospects in their farm system right now. Tons of pitching, but what happens when the huge markets outbid the Tigers this winter in free agency and leave the Tigers with no left side of the infield and catcher again? Having the salary off the books is good in theory, but it doesn't guarantee you can always fill your needs just by bidding for a free agent especially when the Yankees can come around and double any offer.

I'm kind of in the middle with Leyland. I don't think he's as bad as some people make him out to be, especially given the circumstances last season and this one. I think overall Leyland has done a pretty nice job given the hand he was dealt by Dombrowski every year since 2006. I will never understand Leyland's decision to give Placido Polanco the day off with the chance to clinch the AL Central though. He ended up getting a lot of days off, Jim.

DD is a double edged sword. He can make brilliant moves like getting Cabrera and Jackson and than he makes bad moves like the Jurrjens/Renteria deal or the overpriced extensions that never pan out. One thing is certain - the farm system is not in as good of shape as we were led to believe and the lack of talented position players who can actually hit the ball is a bit depressing.

Watching how well Tampa Bay plays with such a low payroll stung almost as much as the sweep itself. You have to think Ilitch is aware of these issues but at his age does he really want to start over again? I think this summer is the last chance for DD. He has 70M or so to work with and if his moves fail to produce a consistent product on the field I'm guessing both he and Leyland will be shipped out.

Oops - I repeated half of what GoWings1905 said. That's what I get for opening the response window and than going to have breakfast before typing. Oh well great minds think alike I guess...

Yeah, Maggs might be a good re-sign, but I am glad he wont qualify for his automatic 15M next year. Robertson was NEVER worth what they paid for him, and it was stupid to give Willis that much having never really proved himself. Inge is still a solid .250 20HR 80RBI guy, and a gold glove at 3B, so I don't mind paying him at all. With about 50M available for next year, we NEED a capable SS, C, two SP, and to get rid of Don Kelly.
