newfy 695 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 Okay while I was watching the Griffs game tonight I was talking to some of the guys and I really noticed something and I was wondering if any fight haters noticed too. Having an enforcer does really make the team play with more balls. Think about while May was playing. We had guys like Meech and CLeary fighting and we were just playing like we had overall a bigger pair of balls while May was in the lineup. So I just wanted to say it does seem to me an enforcer does have an effect on the team more so then most ppl here on LGW care to admit. And no I'm not flame-baiting haha I'm just saying something I've noticed lately. 3 ManLuv4Clears, uk_redwing and 55fan reacted to this
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 Very true. It was noticable when Downey was with us as well, when (again) guys like Cleary and even Rafalski dropped the gloves sticking up for themselves and a teammate respectively. Whether this has any effect on the scoreline is debatable, but it definately makes for more entertaining hockey.

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 You mean when the Wings were losing they were playing with more balls, or when they were giving the puck away too many times they were playing with more balls? The Wings are 12-2-1 since the Olympic break, all without any balls, apparently. If you haven't noticed, I don't give a s*** about balls. I give a s*** about a winning hockey team. And this team is currently winning. You want balls, watch a porno. 3 Frozen-Man, titanium2 and Hossa4Life reacted to this

uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 I give a s*** about a winning hockey team. And this team is currently winning. Where I come from thats called a glory supporter. We give a s*** about watching proper hockey. And dont go down the "winning" road either, because Id love just love to point out we had Downey, Drake and McCarty when we won the 07-08 Stanley Cup. Oh look, I did. 1 55fan reacted to this

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 Where I come from thats called a glory supporter. The fact I want the team to win makes me a glory supporter? OK, then. I want the team to win more than I want them to needlessly fight, and apparently this is a completely f***ed up world view on your planet? We give a s*** about watching proper hockey. And dont go down the "winning" road either, because Id love just love to point out we had Downey, Drake and McCarty when we won the 07-08 Stanley Cup. Oh look, I did. Lolz. Drake and McCarty combined for five fights the ENTIRE SEASON, with McCarty having only one in the playoffs. In 07-08 the Wings had the FEWEST fighting majors (aka, balls) of any team in the league. And they won the Cup despite the lack of balls. Now's not the time for "balls". Now's the time to win hockey games. Hockey is about having more skill, perseverance and determination to put the puck in the net more often than the opposition. It's not about hoping some 220-pound guy with no hands fights another 220-pound guy with no hands. The Wings haven't fought since Feb. 11. They're 12-2-1 in 15 and 9-0-1 in 10. Why would we want to screw with that? There's a time and a place for fighting, and a time when it's absolutely necessary. The 1997 and '98 Wings had to exercise some issues they had with Claude Lemieux. They wanted to pound him and I don't blame them. They used it as a rallying point IMO for those two years. But that's in another time and an era gone by. If you fight guys want to watch Kocur and McCarty, I'm sure they're playing senior hockey somewhere in the greater Detroit Area. I'd love to shake their hands because those years were good times and both were proud Red Wings. But they're in the past and the reason this team is winning games. 1 Green Wing reacted to this

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 I don't think this is a revelation, although some here will disagree. I think the Wings euros played tougher in 2008 than they did in prior years, because it helped having guys like Mac, Downey and Drake in the lineup. It's just called leading by example. If your 4th line is out there hitting everything in sight and fighting from time to time, that'll spark the rest of the team to play tougher and more energetic as well. That's what the 4th line's job is. To stir the pot and spark the team. 1 55fan reacted to this

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 You guys do realize that just because we've gone on a winning streak here doesn't mean that enforcers are completely useless now in hockey. That argument can go both ways.

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 1, 2010 (edited) Well, without May the boys have been playing without balls -- er, I mean winning a lot (hey, some like the cause based rationale for enforcers being on a team that merely won the cup therefore were a prominent or essential part of it.. lets use their rationale). Maybe he's doing that enforcer voodoo upon other teams from afar so they'll be too afraid to smack around wussy Euros like Dats, Z, and Flip. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 1, 2010 Honestly, I've noticed this season outside of Crosby on Zetterberg and a few Abdelkader incidents where he bitched out, teams arent acting tough against us anymore. Normally there'd be scrums and teams punching our stars in the face after whistles all the time, but this year not so much. I think having Bertuzzi, Ericsson, and to some extent Lilja has had a bit of an impact. I'm all about enforcers, and I'd take the 97 team over this year or last years anyday of the friggin week, but IMO the need for an enforcer hasnt been there as much this year. But to your point UK, of course having May in the line-up gave us more balls, just like Downey did, that isnt up for debate, that is fact. 2 55fan and GMRwings1983 reacted to this
