It's been 2 years since the wings won the 2008 cup. I say lets dedicate this thread to that team. Only positive things to be posted please. put any videos, picture, stories, or whatever from that season in this thread and lets remember that team.

i did not make this video. and i know i said nothing bad and it starts with the injuries, but it has the call from Ken Kal at the end so its worth it

I really think that this team could woop the s*** out of the hawks and pens even now. The players were just that damn good and they were such a deep team.

Actually part of me thinks the 07-08 team could beat the 01-02 team in a best of 7.

The 01-02 Team that showed up in the regular season and vsed Vancouver? Yes.

The 01-02 Team that beat the Avs and the Canes? No.

Thanks for posting my video. :P

I found your video when I was searching for a particular 1998 Cup victory tribute; it used the same song. Sadly, I couldn't find that one.

Edit: I see you sneaked a couple of '06-'07 highlights into that video :P

Possibly. Despite the difference in talent that team probably had the best conversion of player to system that I have seen.

Only problem that team had was closing. Always hated that.

Yeah, that's why I used that song. I remember that video and couldn't find it anywhere.

The funny thing about the 06-07 highlights is I didn't even realize that they were from 06-07 until after I finished the video. You can tell by the Stars (I think?) old style jersey that they stopped using after that season. I was gonna change it but I figured it wasn't worth it.

There are some pretty sweet tributes on youtube from that season though.

Practically the same team we'll have next season... Time will tell if thats a good or bad thing.

I think the thing that put that team over the top was hunger. They just wanted it more than every other team that they played, and you could tell. I think a lot of the fire was lost out of this years team because they had been there the last two years, they just didn't want it as much as some of the other teams did. The talent will be there, it's just a question of will.

When comparing the 07-08 team to 01-02, and 96-97 and 97-98, I was so impressed with how they won the Stanley Cup. Other than being tied 2-2 against Nashville, there was never really any doubt that they were going to win it all! Plus Ozzie was in a grove all season.

96-97 there was still that fear of the unknown, everything being new, and wondering if they really could do it!

97-98, they went down 2-1 to Phoenix, then we had to deal with Ozzie trying to stop the long shots. I thought we were done after the Langenbrunner goal.

01-02 they went down 0-2 to Vancouver, and were down 3-2 to Colorado. Forsberg's OT goal, like Langenbrunner's, felt like a killer! Even losing game 1 to Carolina, and their trap made me nervous!

07-08 won the first two games of every series. True Nashville tied it, Dallas won a couple games after we went up 3-0, and Pittsburgh won Game 5, but the 07-08 Wings we in control from beginning to end.

The 96-97 Wings would have ran each and every one of the other teams into the ground imo. Yes, even the 2001-2002 team. They had the deepest back end and that team was simply on a mission.

Yea looking back at it the 96-97 team was a machine.

Funny, I've always thought the weakest part of the 01-02 team was the Defense. After Lidstrom and Chelios it took a big step down, with Fischer, Olausson, Dandenault, and Duchesne. Fischer was solid that year, but Olausson, Dandenault, and Duchesne were average or below average in my opinion.

I thought 07-08 had the best D with Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Lilja/Chelios, and Lebda. That second pairing of Kronwall and Stuart was excellent! Plus opponents were wondering if they would be the next one to be "Kronwalled"

I think this element was missing these last playoffs and it really hurt the team. Kronwall wasn't hitting like he usually does, the wings besides Abdelkader were just less physical in general then they usually are come play off time. Guys like Dats usually even dish out some hits in the spring time but not this year.

The 97 team would beat all the teams I think. They had the skill to match all the other championship teams but wow were they tough. If the skill is even it comes down too who is tougher and that team was tough, plus they were motivated from losing to Jersey in 95 and getting beat out by Colorado(iirc?) the years prior. They were the most motivated, toughest and just as skilled as every other team.

If that 1996 team had beaten the divealanche, they'd probably be talked about as the best Wings team. In the Finals, Florida would have been a cakewalk just like it was for the dives.

That team put up 62 wins and 131 points, and it's a shame they couldn't finish that season off in the playoffs.

08 Wings vs 02 Wings? Man, thats a tough one. '02 has the clear edge in talent, but as Doc points out, with the system that we followed in '08 we were quite simply an unstoppable machine. Talent + Hunger + System = a cup win that when you look back was never really in doubt. And what a regular season we had too, 1st in points, shots for, shots against, goals against, 2nd in goals for. And that was with a month of February when we had 10 starters out injured and Lilja-Lebda was our 1st pair!

Against that, Bowman said that the '02 team was the best of all the teams he coached. Better than the 1970s Montreal Canadiens. Better than the Lemiuex-Francis-Jagr et al Penguins. And that WCF against Colorado will go down as one of the great series of all time - at least 13 Hall of Famers on the ice, plus more besides on the bench and upstairs. The 2-0 road win in game 6 is one of the greatest performances I have ever seen by the Wings. But then again, so were games 1 + 2 of the '08 finals. So tough.......
