Abdelkader re-signs for 2 years

That must be based on the previous seasons' salary. Last year, Abdelkader's base salary was $710,000 with a potential performance bonus of $140,000 (which he must not have met). Since he made more than $660k but less than $1 million he was due a 5% raise, which would've put him at no less than $745,5000. Not too shabby if you're Ken Holland!

He did get at least $50k of his bonus money. Not that it matters though.

The mandatory 5% raise is only for the qualifying offer. He could have signed for league minimum if he'd wanted.

Really? That seems kind of ridiculous if the player was given his qualifying offer which would be more than the league minimum.

Most qualifying offers are 1 year, 2-way deals for whatever the minimum required amount is. The majority of them are rejected, and then real negotiations start.

A player might reject an offer to negotiate for a higher salary, longer term, more secure spot on the roster, or just to see what offers they might get from other teams. Accepting his qualifying offer might have meant Abby spent the season in GR, making ~$700k or so less. So not that ridiculous. And that's just assuming his deal is actually less than his QO.

The only way I can see a player even considering it is if he wants a multi-year deal and that is more more important than a little bit more money. But yeah, I agree that it would be an odd situation.

I understand all that...my point is that 99.9% of time no player in their right mind is going to make less than their QO.

Obvious that we're going to trade, but we ARE still under the cap aren't we? If i calculated it right about 80K-ish.

Now that this is over, just wait and see who's heading out

Depends on the potential bonuses for Modo and Salei. If both performance bonus' are met, the Wings are now actually $775,377 over the cap, which would have to apply to next years' team.

Can it apply to this year's cap if we are $775 377 under the cap? This damn CBA is so confusing.

Absolutely it can. Bonuses can apply to either this year or the following. But his question was based on no one being be moved. If that's the case and both Modo and Salei's bonuses are met, then they'd be $775,377 over.

The cap is only half the issue. There's also the 23 man roster limit. Currently, counting Ritola and all bonuses, we have 25 players and ~$1.3 million over the cap.

Moving Meech and using the bonus cushion (if bonuses are met) gives us the cap we need, but we still need to move one more player.

Not that rare. Neither Meech nor Ritola got their raises either. Leino didn't last year. I think a few of Chicago's RFAs didn't.

But for a player like Abby, who seems to have a solid future in the NHL, you might be pretty close. I think in most cases it's players like Ritola, who haven't really shown themselves to be NHLers, that get less.

He'll have to get used to playing wing. That is, if Helm is the 4th line center and Modano/Filppula is the 3rd line center. Doesn't sound like it should be too hard but I think Abby has played center his whole life.

Wings' centers to start the season: (may change during the course of the season of course)

Zetterberg

Filppula

Modano

Helm/Abdelkader (toss up)

Don't know about Zetterberg as the first line center. Datsyuk did a lot better on faceoffs last year from what I remember. But they'll probably play it by ear.

Zetterberg can cheat a bit as he is the primary centre and if he get tossed out datsyuk is there to win it, it's awesome to have two players of that calibre to take the faceoffs
