I don't expect to see any significant decline on their blueline, which is arguably one of the better in the Eastern Conference. Their philosophy when it comes to their forwards is puzzling. They are extremely deep down the middle, yet they don't have a single top-six winger. Letang and Goligoski have a bit of skill, but they don't have a real PP quarterback. I think they will struggle quite a bit without Gonchar, especially on the PP. Unless maybe Martin and Michalek can really step up thier game. Defensively they should be fine, though. Very solid in that respect. In regards to their forwards; they're spending almost as much for Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and Kunitz as we are on Pav, Hank, Franzen, Flip, Hudler, and Cleary. They need to get someone better than Kunitz for the money they're paying him, then either trade Malkin or Staal, or convert one to wing. It remains to be seen just how good Michalek is in the Pens system. The 6th d-man played in the AHL last year. Only Orpik is certain to be solid on defense and even that is kind of questionable. He can hit, block shots and knock the puck off your stick, but sometimes when he handles he's really careless. The Pens spent $9 mil on Martin and Michalek this off season. Salary cap....but yeah losing Gonchar is a bigger loss than most people think. Sure they got Martin but Gonchar was a big cog in their machine. No doubt there, but I think he was saying that the Pens defense as a whole is one of the better in the East, and I'd agree. Philly is probably better, and a few others are close, but not many teams even in the West are notably superior. They still need a 6/7th (McKee maybe), but they look solid so far. Defensively that is. Not a lot of scoring there though. PP is probably going to suck. They haven't been very good in the past two years, even with Gonchar.
