Before getting injured Salei played 24 minutes a night and was a physical force with big hits and dirty play. Before getting injureed Lilja was a solid 13 minute a night guy who didnt throw big hits but would fight three times a year and do ok.

Compare the stats and Salei looks much better. There really isnt any basis in people saying Lilja is better

Salei didn't play on a team with a defense like ours so it stands to reason he got more minutes. Lilly was pretty damned good on the PK as well. Just sayin'...

Shot blocking. Statistically, Lilja was far and away the best on the team during the regular season (even in his limited games played) and the playoffs. We don't really have a lot of other guys out there willing to sacrifice the body.

In 08-09 Salei had 143 blocked shots in 70 games, Lilja 92 in 60 games. Lilja averaged 1.5 blocks a game, Salie averaged 2 blocked shots per game. Salie had 36 give aways, Lilja had 29 in 10 less games with fewer minutes played.

Lilja isn't better in any stats category really at all, and this was all before his brain got scrambled

Well, that sucks.

Succinct, but to the point. I had hoped he'd come back and be able to play for the Wings, but it appears that's not to be. In any event, I wish him well in his future endeavors and I hope that maybe he'll find his way back to the Winged Wheel. If not, it's been a slice.

Hmmm...we're pregnant with a girl; can a girl be named Lilja? Lilja May Lowell?

My wife is seriously contemplating "Stevie". She adores Yzerman. (But who doesn't)

Edit: WHat happenned to the negs? You could just neg me if you didn't like it instead of hijacking an entire thread with replies. Sorry.

The negs are gone. It's all sweetness and light here now at the new LGW. ;)

As for the name, I think Lilja is beautiful, but I would go with Lilja Marie Lowell, personally. May and Marie are both derivations on the same name (Mary), so it could work.

The only real advantage he has had on Salei is plus minus which is obviously going to be higher becaus of the difference in the teams, Salei was only -4 on a team whose top 6 defenseman were -10, -16,-12,-19, and -21. Other then that Salei has less give aways, higher take aways, hits are close, but Salei is known for being a more punishing hitter.

A healthy Salei is better then Lilja even if Lilja is a good #5 defenseman. A healthy Salei is a number 4 guy

Yet you were making a big deal because Salei played 24 minutes per night and Lilja only played 13 as if that actually means something. I think people are seriously overrating Salei and those people will likely be extremely disappointed when he doesn't live up to the hype.

btw, Salei was a -minus player on a stacked Ducks d-corp too. Needless to say Salei is a career -25, while Lilja is a career +39. Salei only had 21 hits while Lilja had 38 hits last year... yet "Lilja isn't better in any stats category really at all" Lol. I'll give your logic another one of these bad boys --->

Youre going to preach at me about using logic and then use last season where Salei played 14 games and Lilja played 20 as your measuring stick? Well Salei had 1 less blocked shot then Lilja in 14 games compared to Liljas 20. Their hits work out to 1.5 per game and 1.9 per game, hardly a difference at all. Lilja had more giveaways and they had the same number of takeaways in 6 less games for Salei. Now thats all using an extremely small sample size but still, Salei has the stats advantage in those 20 games. Hows that for logic

Logic should also measure puck possession. Why would a player blocks shots when their team has possession of the puck? After Olympics Detroit was the best team in the league. They weren't the best team in the league because they didn't have the puck and needed to block shots for 55 minutes per night.

You already pointed out how bad Colorado's D-corp were... seems you would have used more logic to come to a more realistic conclusion with all the facts. If Salei decides to block shots while Detroit has possession of the puck, then I propose he should be waived for Kindl to play.

What about 09-10 for Salei? That's where I was pulling my Lilja stats from.

Plus, when I calculated Lilja's blocked shot stats for the regular season and playoffs (it was in a previous thread a few months back), I calculated it based on minutes played, not games played. I'm betting Lilja will still come out ahead and I'll try and do the calculations shortly.

EDIT: And I will stand corrected here, Salei has an edge in the regular season, but Lils has the edge in the postseason:

Salei

Regular Season: 0.090 shots blocked/min

Playoffs: 0.100 shots blocked/min

Lilja

Regular Season: 0.086 shots blocked/min

Playoffs: 0.138 shots blocked/min

You ought to include Lilja's San Jose stats in your profile as a signature.
