Ritola will be traded or waived

Not entirely familiar with the details of waivers. With Ritola out of options, would a team claiming him have to put him on their roster or can they assign him to the minors directly?

They could, but he'd have to clear waivers. Detroit (or any team) could claim him. If a team claims him, they'll do it for immediate NHL roster spot. I hope Yzerman claims him.

I really like Drew Miller, but this is a terrible decision. Drew Miller doesn't give the Red Wings anything they don't have. Granted, neither does Ritola right now but he definitely could down the road. Miller is redundant - this team is stacked with solid defensive forwards. It should have been Eaves or Miller and Ritola. We don't need both of the first two.

Ritola is going to get claimed. He's coming from the Red Wings.

Something everyone needs to realize is that Patrick Eaves wasn't a 1st round pick on accident - He needs to finish his career here. Eaves is EXACTLY the type of player we need - He can fill many roles, plays with an edge and could play on higher lines in a scoring role as well if needed... Eaves was never even in question. PERIOD.

The 14th spot came down to Miller or Ritola from day 1 of camp...

Miller flat out won the job in camp and was a MAJOR component to our turned around penalty kill last season, also, Miller is not even 3 years older than Ritola.... To say that we've seen all we're ever going to from Miller(who only had 1 year in the Wings system), but Ritola (after 3 years in the Wings system) had more upside still, is ridiculous as well...

Once again, I would have LOVED to have been able to keep both and hope by some odd chance that Ritola clears waivers (and I wish Ritola a very successful NHL career elsewhere if it's not the case)... but the fact of the matter is, that Holland made the right move.

List of people wavied.

off topic- LOL at the "media operates" battle from McKenzie's twitter page.

Matt Pelech in Calgary... wow, another 1st rd pick on waivers... this guy needs a fresh start I think, kid had a TON of upside and is a big bodied, right handed shot (pretty hard one at that) D-man with a bit of an edge to his game... I blame Calgary's system for his development (or lack thereof)...

Holland has to know that rittola is going to be claimed, he couldn't get anything for him???

Let's say every team knew the Wings were going to have to trade him or put him on waivers, why would they give up assests when they knew they might be able to get him on waivers? If Ritola still was waiver exempt, I'm positive Holland could have gotten at least a late round pick for him.

From his body language during his interview tonight between the 2nd and 3rd periods and Babs dodging the question about him specifically, PLUS Babs comments about Miller already having the roster spot... I'm VERY confident the decision has already been made and Ritola's time with the Wings is over... that's just my gut feeling though

Pshh, no way this happens ;)

I know Ritola excited some people but in my understanding he was never called a high end prospect. If he'll just be a bottom 2 lines player losing him won't be a huge loss. That being said I'd still rather keep him, you never know what he could turn into. But with Smith, Nyquist, Tatar, and all the kids we drafted this year, Ritola is a bit lower on my list of "prospects I'm excited for."

I agree to some extent, there are so only so many roster spots and Ritola may end up being a casualty to our embarrassment of riches, and if so, I wish him nothing but success on another team... with how deep we are on the current roster and the age our current crop of players are - there are really only going to be 3 spots available on forward in the next 3+ years or so and with the holes these players will be leaving, the 3 guys currently in our system that seem the most poised to fill these holes are Mursak, Tatar, Andersson, Emmerton and Nyquist, short of someone else coming up fast in our system and taking the brass by surprise and basically leaving them no choice but to give them a roster spot (Mitchell Callahan, Riley Sheahan, Francis Pare, etc...), the fact of the matter is that it might just end up being a "wrong place, wrong time" scenario for Ritola...
