unsaddleddonald 357 Report post Posted December 4, 2010 Guys, I have been watching the Wings for 15 years and I know they have been dominant during that stretch. But looking at highlights of other games recently it looked as if the games were being played with a lot more speed, almost like watching college hockey. What I mean by that is there was a lot more end to end action with many chances and, also, many turnovers. It made me think of Wings games where the game always looks slower and the hockey is a lot more methodical and organized. I think it can be attributed to the fact that the Wings play puck possession hockey and no matter who the opponent is, it seems, the Wings ALWAYS seem to force the other team to play their game and force the other team to play more controlled and careful. Am I offbase with this or has anyone else noticed that Wings games seem to have a slower and methodical pace than other games in the NHL?
Broken 16 381 Report post Posted December 4, 2010 I do agree that most other games look a lot more hectic. Not sure about the "ALWAYS" imposing their will part, but yea, I kinda agree.
theman19 47 Report post Posted December 4, 2010 (edited) living in raleigh, I watch lots of canes games. I've always kinda of thought of Carolina as Detroit's annoying kid brother (given the illich Karmanos connection) That said carolina plays the game about as opposite as you can get from Detroit. They carry the puck in the zone, normally on staals stick and score their goals off crashing the net over and over again until they get lucky. Guys like Staal, Skinner and some others normally deke a few guys out of their socks but they're very much a shoot shoot shoot kinda team, no cycle unless it's a pp. It's got a lot to do I think with how your D interacts with forwards. We've got some great puck moving D and they set up the plays for our own end. In carolina's case,......Pitkanen is about all they got for offensive D (although they've got some good rookies coming up) so they're forward corps is used to having to carry the play. We're the team everyone wants to duplicate, but very few can. Edited December 4, 2010 by theman19

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted December 4, 2010 The East is more run-and-gun back-and-forth, but I don't see a huge difference between Wings games and other games between Western Teams. However Detroit is a puck-possession style team, and they're the best at it in the league, so it makes sense that they often control the flow of the game. A small part of my soul died when we lost in game 7 to the Penguins. Based on that I can't support the always part of the op's statement. :nonono:

I've just spent the past three days in s***sburgh country interviewing...I thought I just had the miserable taste out of my mouth and then you remind me about that vile, dark event two years ago that has been the recurring topic of conversation with every person I've talked to who discovers I'm a Wings fan.
