toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 For some reason, I get the feeling that Crosby would be nowhere near the All-Star game if that were the case. I'd guess he'd still be the top vote getter. In a recent poll of players (small sample though, only 26 players from 10 different teams, 5 in the East and 5 in the west), 100% of those players picked Crosby as the best player in the league. Of course, the question was "Who's the best player in the league, Crosby or Ovechkin?" - so if the question was simply who is the best player, he may or may not have rec'd 100% of the votes. Guest mindfly Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Is there a mandatory "atleast one player from each team" like it's been in some years, even phoenix sent Doan even though he was far from good that year etc
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 I stand corrected But lidstrom and datsyuk should be two of those 36 i think, even if datsyuk has been injured. Yeah probably, but I think it would be stretch to also include Zetterberg. Doubt you'll see 3 players from the same team. The Pens have 4 because of voting (3 probably deserve it), but if the NHL operations were picking, they probably wouldn't want that much representation from one team. GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Only in Chicago. Every other real hockey fan could give two s***s about them. You wouldn't have any Chicago fans in any other NHL venue had it not been for their recent success. Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Hasek back in 2002, right? That was North America vs. the World. According to wikipedia, Shanahan, Fedorov, Hasek and Lidstrom were the starters. Obviously, Shanny was not playing for the same team as the other three guys. Chelios was also playing, but not starting. I guess with that format, there's more potential for a single team to have 5 guys playing in an ASG, and 4 of them starting. Still, that wasn't the year I was thinking of. I was thinking of recent history and the current Wings team.

It's been that way in the recent past, but a lot of other changes are being implemented this year, so you never know.
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 (edited) Oh you're talking about starters... i only watched the 2002 playoffs so did the wings really have 4 voted-in players? Yes. See my post above. Edited January 4, 2011 by GMRwings1983
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Probably important to note that the concept of "starters" no longer exists either, which is apparent by the headline "First 6....". Obviously, you can't have a starting line up made up of only 6 players anyway.
dragonballgtz 273 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Why don't we stack the ballot? Conspiracy indeed. I would rather they skip it and get some rest. If a player did say to the fans he really wanted to go then I would vote. 1 ogreslayer reacted to this

Huh, I actually remember reading a poll just last month or so that stated that in a poll of something like 126 current NHL players, Datsyuk was overwhelmingly voted the best player in the league (46% or so). Wish I could find it, but I swear I read it recently.

Wish I could find it, but I swear I read it recently. This was part of the Winter Classic hoopla...questions are limited to Crosby vs. Ovechkin though. http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/insider/news/story?id=5970887&action=upsell&appRedirect=http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/insider/news/story%3fid%3d5970887 I'm not an insider, so I don't have full access, but I was able to find the results at least: ESPN conduced a pre-Winter Classic poll of the NHL players. The Penguin-relevant questions and the results are: 1. Who is better? Crosby or Ovechkin?100% of the voters picked Crosby over Ovechkin 2. Is Crosby a dirty player 100% of the voters voted No, he is not a dirty player 3. Who do you respect more, Crosby or Ovechkin? 65.4% of the voters picked Crosby over Ovechkin 4. Who would you want as a teammate, Crosby or Ovechkin? 84.5% picked Crosby over Ovechkin 5. Which team would you want to join, Pittsburgh or Washington? 69.2% picked the Penguins over the Capitals 6. Which team would be the more fearsome playoff opponent, Pittsburgh or Washington? 76.9% picked the Penguins over the Capitals 7. Which team has the better coach, Pittsburgh or Washington? 50% picked Bylsma, 15.4% picked Boudreau and 34.6% abstained 8. Which team, the Penguins or the Capitals, have the better fans? 53.8% picked the Penguins, 30.8% picked the Capitals, 15.4% abstained 9. Which city do you more enjoy visiting, Pittsburgh or Washington? 25 of the 26 players who responded to this question picked Washington
Travis 576 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 Those starters are a joke, but we all saw that coming. Letang was actually a write-in vote, which is kind of cool; I guess. I really hope Lidstrom is named a Captain out of respect at the very least.

I really hope Lidstrom is named a Captain out of respect at the very least. I'm sure Lidstrom would be one of the captains, but not so sure about the other captain, I'll reserve my guess until I see the total pool of 42 players from which to pick. instead of voting for our guys to go to the game why don't we try and keep them out to rest up? let these other fan's vote for crosby and all the other obvious choices every year i say we keep our boys out and let them use the rest. I hear this all the time, but I don't really understand it. If the team has great players, which is a good thing, then some of those great players will get selected for the all star team, regardless if they are voted in by the fans or not. Not having anyone selected probably means the team isn't very good and that's not what I want. I also enjoy watching these guys at the skills competition, etc. Otherwise, I'd probably have very little interest in watching (still some, but very little). Din758 371 Report post Posted January 4, 2011 it kind of sucks that in the voting that the same people can vote multiple times. i understand it would be hard to limit each person to one vote, but the winners seem to be the fans who sit at their computer for 2 hours at work everyday and submit 35 votes a day for the same players. it almost turns into which teams have the fans with the most time on their hands win, not necessarily the best. Give credit where credit is due. i think hes saying that if it wasnt performance based but chosen by players he wouldnt be around. but i still dont really believe that because i think the players tend to have different feelings towards other players than the fans do. you gotta remember that these guys play on the same olympic squads, junior squads, or country men so they get to know each other more than we do. we only see the s***ty d-bag side of crosby, not the cool-tight side of him, if there is one... esteef 2,679 Report post Posted January 5, 2011 The ridiculous way these players are voted in by the fans is only magnified by their participation in the ASG being used later as a "stat" to support how good they are. esteef
