OK Enough with Leyland's hard-on for Raburn. He can't play 2nd base and is not hitting enough to keep him in the lineup. Either trade for a 2B or put Santiago there full time.

Completely agree. How long does he get to turn it on offensively? That ball he missed at second that allowed two crucial runs to score is a rather routine play for an even average second baseman defensively. If he's not hitting, he certainly can't be giving away runs in the field too.

I miss Placido Polanco so much.

Polanco would be incredible right now. Too bad the bloated contracts of Robertson, Bonderman, and Willis tied us up.

We need a real second baseman. As much as I love Ramon, he's not the answer either. We need to move some pieces if we want to truly contend.

If we had a solid piece at the 4 we could have a truly explosive line-up.

i nevewr want to see Coke in a Tigers uniform again, the offense is fine, Leyland is a stubborn idiot and if they want to pay someone to blow games i can do it for a lot less then they are paying coke

Coke is just in the wrong place. Not really his fault, though I agree with your frustration. He's one of the best and most reliable left-handed relievers in the league. The Tigers bullpen is inconsistent at best. It only makes sense to move Coke back there, but Leyland has this obsession with having to have one lefty in the rotation. So move Furbush (who started at Toledo) or Oliver there. Coke is a valuable piece to the team; it's just a matter of the Tigers putting him in the right position to be an asset like he was last season.

I like Santiago too, but there's a reason he has never played every day in his career. Still hate the Sizemore deal, but I'll leave it at that. Oh well, nothing like Justin Verlander to make us feel better.

Leyland must read the board. Coke is being moved back into the bullpen where he can be a successful middle relief man. He was great there last season, and I have no doubt he will do the same from here on out.

In even better news, Daniel Schlereth's worthless arm has been optioned to AAA. At this point, he should probably be playing single-A ball.

I think Santiago is trying to get the starting 2B job. Awesome play in the 1st to double up Reyes, and a couple of hits at the plate as well. Jim, if it aint broke, don't fix it. Leave the guy in and see what he can do as a regular.

How sick is it that JV had a "rough" start today and only allowed a single run? 6-0, 0.92 ERA in June.

Come on Justin, if you can throw 100 late in a game, you can surely start more than once every five days. :thumbs-up:

Haha, that's really awesome. Fortunately for him, our relievers blew it harder than he did.

It's a shame that the runs they were given by Valverde and Villareal made the difference.

The Tigers need pitching help. Badly. Scherzer's win total is so deceiving. I like Max a lot, but he isn't pitching at all like a number two. Penny has been the most consistent starter after JV.

The Mets with a bunch of AAA players besides Reyes and Beltran lit the Tigers up and now the Giants anemic offense is doing the same. The Central is so pathetic and the Tigers can't stay in first over a team spending 1/3 of what they do.

yes, this is very embarrassing. After JV and the Big Potato, this team has nothing in terms of pitching. The pitchers we have do have the skills to be good pitchers, they just are not executing at this point. A major shake-up is needed to wake this team out of it's pitching coma. I just do not know what else to say. We can hit, but have one of the worst staffs anywhere at the moment aside from JV. Dombrowski or Leyland needs to do something drastic to this team. Oh yeah, get rid of Ra-bum too.

that was the definition of a pitcher's duel yesterday. the only way you can beat JV is to not allow any runs yourself. good performance by both hurlers last night, and I tip my hat to Haren who was lights out.

Welp - JV got outdueled by Haren last night. That said, Kendrick is out at 1st long before he ever comes around to score. In all, the officiating was an absolute joke - but it doesn't change the fact that the Tigers' bats weren't there.

Bless You Boys says Hiroka Kiroda (SP, Dodgers), Jeff Keppinger (2B, Astros) and Wandy Rodriguez (SP, Astros) are all potential targets for the Tigers at this point; though Guillen is slowly making his way back to the majors. Obviously, this Tigers team needs a capable second baseman and someone to pitch well that doesn't wear # 35. Hopefully we don't end up with Huff-and-Washburn-type deals.

Rick Knapp was a scapegoat because DD and old man Leyland know they both are toast unless the Tigers win the division. Knapp made Verlander into a true pitcher. I'm none too pleased with the rest of the rotation either, but this move screams "Hey our team is underachieving for the 5th straight year so let's find someone to put the blame on."

This series makes you truly appreciate how incredible Mike Scioscia is as a manager. The Tigers would never be lingering near .500 with him calling the shots. Keep throwing Inge and Raburn out there every day though Jim. Or batting Andy Dirks and Magglio Ordonez third.

Yeah, Knapp's firing was largely reactionary. I doubt it changes anything. The pitching staff is what's struggling, not the coach. Obviously, it doesn't help that they've had 2 days off in the last 40. Here's hoping for a series win in KC and a rebound after the All-Star break.

Cabrera could be in a 0-for-60 slump and I would still expect him to come up and get a big hit. He is so clutch it's beyond impressive.

Glad Penny got a much-deserved victory finally as well. Penny has been nothing but solid with nothing to show for it lately. I just really hope Max can get it going again tomorrow because the Tigs need him to perform really bad.

Well said on all accounts. Good for Penny to get the win in a really well-pitched game from him. Glad the Tigers' bats finally woke up.

Max more so than any of the other starters needs to find himself. He raced out to those 9 wins and has been well below average ever since. Verlander and Scherzer should be a great 1 - 2 punch capable of stealing games for us. JV has been 1, but Max needs to be the 2.
