"The New York Islanders announced today that goaltender Rick DiPietro is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with both facial fractures and knee swelling."

That makes 34 games played in 3 years. Here's and idea when you are the franchise player basically who cant stay healthy....DONT FIGHT.

If I'm running that squad, DiPietro is instantly on waivers.

Dude, you're playing on a team that was just told they weren't worth flying 1500 miles to collect a 700K paycheck, you are injured more often than Obama is in the news, and then you get in a fight?!?! That does not say team player.

Maybe Snow told him to do it as a way to say, "See?? We did need Nabokov!!"

Seems like DiPietro can't fart without breaking/pulling/straining/spraining/rupturing something! Sucks for him, he's more fragile than Stafford is!

See why the Islanders need Nabokov? They really don't have anyone in goaltending to help them out.

How is it that no one has posted this yet? Slackers...

Good ole' Glass RickJoe from Mike Tyson's Punch Out

His only problem is not knowing how to take a punch to the face properly.

Are you kidding? I thought he handled himself well in that fight. He blocked that punch* like a pro.

*with his face

I think it is more to do with him being such a delicate little flower that gets injured every time the wind even blows on him.

Seriously...how on earth did that little wimpy punch fracture his face? My little niece could have taken that punch and walked away no worse for wear.

Talk about a glass jaw... This is the very definition.

I like how they throw in "AND knee swelling" to try and save face(no pun intended). Common they are not fooling anyone, hes out because he got one punched like Matt Cooke.

So, question... Were DiPietro to retire due to recurring injury (and that knee counts as a recurring injury IIRC), the Isles wouldn't be on the hook for his salary, right?

Correct. Since he signed it (and it took effect) before he turned 35, then they're free of his contract hit for the cap.

A couple things:

When I first read this topic title, this popped into my head:

Second, I think it was three years ago I made the suggestion, to no one in particular, that DiPietro should retire.

The guy has been nothing but a nuisance to the Islanders. HE CANNOT STAY HEALTHY. And this injury was just stupid on DiPietro's part. The Isles need to waive him, put him in the minors, leave him there, and move on.

Third, If Snow's serious about not subjecting Poulin to the pressures of carrying the team full-time, he's gotta do something in goal NOW. He's gonna be begging Nabokov to report.

...and finally, if only he knew yesterday what he knows today, he might have snapped up Smith.
