Stastny and Liles not on Ice at Avs Practice

Trading Stastny is a foolish move unless they're getting someone younger and equally good (or potentially more so).

I just don't know what the Aves are thinking this year.

I don't get it either. Personally I think they got hosed in the St. Louis trade...well, hosed is maybe a bit harsh but St. Louis definitely got the better of them in that deal. I definitely don't like the Elliott move either. Stastny should not be moved. This kid is the real deal.

I have heard leaf rumours for Liles.

Yeah, apparently the Leafs are interested but I think they'd want to move some money off their back end if they were to take on Liles because they'd have too much cash committed back there. If they could move Komisarick then they'd be all over this. Plus, if Stastny is available the Leafs should be making a move. Everyone keeps talking about the Leafs being all over Brad Richards as a UFA this summer (or if he does in fact get moved at the deadline) but honestly, if I were the Leafs, I'd be more interested in a younger, cheaper Stastny.

I'm not so sure the Avs got hosed on the St. Louis deal. It all depends on what Shattenkirk does. If he's a 2nd or 3rd defenseman St. Louis will be pumped (based on his excellent season so far that could end up being the case). But Johnson still has huge potential and could very well be a team's top d-man for the next 15 years. He's had some bad luck with injuries but if you look at his offensive numbers they're pretty damn impressive and he's got a ton of time to learn the game and improve in both ends. Don't forget that this kid is only 22 years old and has 92pts in his first 206 NHL games (albiet that's with 1st pairing mins in every situation).

Right now St. Louis came out of that deal on top but the deal has the potential to be huge for Colorado. Swapping their 2nd round pick in '11 or '12 for St. Louis' 1st rounder in '11 or '12 is a sweet deal as well (I assume the pick this year is lottery protected and thus won't go to Col this year).

Does anyone know the specific conditions attached to the 1st and 2nd round picks in this deal?

TSNBobMcKenzie :

Condition on STL 1st rounder is it's top 10 protected. In other words, if STL 1st rder is top 10 this year, COL gets 2012 pick instead.

No info. on the conditions of the second rounder, that I can find...

Johnson is definitely really good and no one can deny his offensive numbers. But Shattenkirk (albeit as a rookie so his sample size isnt as large) has put up 7 goals and 21 assists for 28 points through 49 games. He's also 22 years old. For me it's really all about Chris Stewart in this deal. He's a budding power forward whose only 23 years old and just scored 28 goals last year plus has 17 in 39 this season (and 34 total points). That swapping of draft picks are an added bonus as well.

For me, as good as Johnson is (and he is really good) Shattenkirk looks like he's going to be a real player and Chris Stewart is looking like a power forward that you just never see anymore. Jay McClement was just a toss into this deal. He's not a bad player by any stretch but he's really nothing note worthy when compared to these three.

I am constantly shocked at what that organization is doing. As others have noted, they were really close, with a ridiculously young and fast team. They reminded me somewhat of the Hawks 2 or 3 seasons ago, I thought they were a couple pieces away from having a contending team again.

As Stastny Sr. said, this will set them back years.

Just seems so strange that they were already in the midst of a successful rebuild, and then to just start from scratch and rebuild again.

I would not be happy if I were an Aves fan or player.

well the avs were close to being a great team. they got embarresed in the blues trade i mean even if johnson pans out they gave up two great assets. I would be pissed to be an avs fan

In my opinion I don't see Liles being traded, >>> I <<< believe hes a main asset defensively for them. Losing Liles would be shattering for them. REMEMBER, THIS IS MY OPINION.

And Statsny leaving too? I don't see this happening. If anything... they're just taking the day off.

Could Toronto be invovled? I've been hearing rumors about Liles all week, not to mention Burke is looking for that #1 center and he loves Americans.. I love this time of year

He loves Americans?? There's a grand total of 3 Americans on the Leafs active roster. The Red Wings have more Americans than they do. By your logic, Ken Holland must get a hard on when he sees an American.

I thought the Aves really had an up and coming group, but with all the mismanagement this year (imo) I fear they are going backwards.

It is puzzling... They really want to be the big sellers when they would have been able to just make a minor move or two and been contenders next year???

They must just really want to be the youngest team in the league no matter the cost.

I am beyond perplexed by their moves thus far...
